This was an absolutely brilliant response. Thank you, Senator Clinton, for not giving the easy answer. This shows a level of maturity and understanding that is missing from some of the other candidates. They may be ready to lead in the future, but Sen. Clinton is ready now!
I'm glad Hillary support diplomacy first before rushing in to meet with those leaders. Remember, one dictator called our current president the" spawn of the devil." Another leader who denies the Holocaust ever occured while the third leader repeatedly violated international standards to try to develop nuclear weapons. By all means, try diplomacy first! The president should meet when there is a constructive agenda.
Hillary said it best: "until we know what the way forward would be". They don't have the magic beans to make the war better. Smoke and mirrors. Everyone likes to talk like they are war experts, and that they have a magic bullet solution. Poppycock.
Lousy answer, Foolary. Looks like you outsmarted yourself again. There's nothing wrong with meeting the nastiest dictators anytime, as long as the US is in control. What a calculated, canned response. But then again, that's what you are. And it looks like you didn't gain jack squat from this dumb squabble. Barack Obama gained nothing as well. So it looks like for all of your effort, all you got was a draw.
Most politicians are criticized for going back on their word. Hillary is giving the tough answers that mean she won't have to back track on what she's said. Invariably it's easy for young, inexperienced candidates to pander, she does not! We should be thankful especially in light of the actions of the current administration.
What Hillary said during her speech to the Council on Foreign Relations in 2006 and she said during an interview with Keith Olbermann on Countdown in January is inconsistent with the response she gave during the debate.
Fantastic! She truly is presidential, all the other candidates, especially the republicans, drown in her brilliant light. She is going to whip the living crap out of the repubs! Go Hillary! w00t! w00t!
Duh Hillary, that wasn't the question! Obama hit the nail on the head with his simple answer. Hillary demonstrates the problem with politicians today: they don't make a move unless they consult a committee, made up of their big campaign contributors first.
This woman is flippin sharp! and, it only makes sense that she should get to know policy and understand what is going on, before jumping in on something! Brains and Beauty. wow. women can really have it all?
for the meek shall inherit the earth. I think that means women.
"But, you know, one thing I have to say about Senator Clinton's comments a couple of moments ago. I think it's terrific that she's asking for plans from the Pentagon, and I think the Pentagon response was ridiculous. But what I also know is that the time for us to ask how we were going to get out of Iraq was before we went in."
I agree that we shouldn't just jump into diplomacy, but I don't think waiting a year is necessarily smart. Regardless, I'll still vote for Hillary. She can handle any dictator with ease.
She's not saying that she would wait one year to engage them, she's is saying she would not commit to meeting with them personally. She will send the State Department. She also didn't rule out meetings, she simple say she would not commit without knowing the ground rules
Hilary needs to be aware that most voters are not as smart as herself is. To win vote sometimes its better to give a more popular answer than one that's absolutely right.
Your answer sounded scripted and rehearsed. I admired your discipline and poise on the debate floor, but you do not strike me as a genuine leader. I like Bill, he is very likeable. You, on the other hand, give me nausea.
WRONG - We need to meet with third world leaders as soon as possible. The longer it takes the more dangerous the world becomes. I am sure no president would jump into harms way but it should not take a year to determine Americas intentions; Get the job done NOW!
Totally put me off! very adverse, absolute, and condescending. Hillary seems to have a high and mighty complex and has rehearsed too long. She still seems to believe that some "foreigners" took out the trade towers. She is all posture and no stance.
I think it's great that India's parliament elected a female president, but in India the "president" is a ceremonial position. The prime minister holds the real power in that case. Certainly, I agree with you though that there are many other countries with female leaders. Maybe that's why she said "other countries." ;)
Hillary commanded the stage. She was the only candidate that consistently addressed the individuals posing questions, which made a big difference. She was the closest to mastering the forum format, thus conveying one of the strongest images. Also, the answer to this question was amazingly put.
Right answer! You can't meet with rogue leaders without knowing their intent! Obama looked very inexperienced and weak on this question! GO HILLARY 08!
Hillary showed the experience needed to be a leader. And is ready from day 1. Unlike the rest. Though I would like to see some thought into possibly A Clinton/Biden Ticket.
Good response because to promise something that might not be delivered would be foolish. Also shows strength and command of understanding the workings of the office of president and the process involved.
How can it hurt to meet with leaders of other nations? Just invite them to the White House. Then you as President can set the agenda and you will not be "used" for propaganda purposes. Then if they do not accept your invitation you can always say you invited them to the table! Think out of the box, not in the box others try to put you in!
I'm sorry, you missed the point. Inviting someone to the White House is a deeply symbolic gesture that implies that you trust that person and that that person is willing to work with you in kind. If you have not done the diplomatic negotiations to find out just who these people are and what they're after, you very well may wind up with an embarrassing incident for the US and its standing at large. We need to improve, not worsen, our diplomatic effort.
The meeting does not need to be in the White House, in our country or thiers but a place where a third party could be included. The bottom line is it needs to be done and done as soon as possible. Putting it off only makes the world more dangerous. It should not take a year to decide what we want or where we stand. When I ask my wife if she is going to town
I don't need her to explain how she will get there only that she is going.

How can it hurt to meet with leaders of other nations? Just invite them to the White House. Then you as President can set the agenda and you will not be "used" for propaganda purposes. I'm sorry, you missed the point. Inviting someone to the White House is a deeply symbolic gesture that implies that you trust that person and that that person is willing to work with you in kind. Castro has been in power for 40 years. "Deeply symbolic gestures" don't seem to have done that much.
Recognize reality, folks...
As to doing the 'diplomatic spadework...' well, we won't actually do it until we begin meeting with them.
Finally, invading Iraq was a "deeply symbolic gesture," which constrains both our 'symbolic' options and our real ones.
