Was that really called for? So you gave him $5 after insulting him to his face and now you feel superior...right. Think about it, The most caring and truly charitable and empathetic persons probably aren't bragging about their "good deeds" on youtube.
How profoundly this country would change if people took the most important elements of what you say here to heart, and applied them daily in their lives and judgements. Respecting everyone and assuming that there's a reason why they are the way they are. Having a sense of "there but for the grace of god go I." Giving when you can, but also caring whether what you're contributing is making it out the other end in help that truly affects people.
If only we could all just follow this very advice (and not only limit care, concern and empathy) to the holidays.. I think the world could be a far happier and fairer place.
The best thing to do is to give to local organizations and departments (homeless shelter, animal shelter, fire department etc.). Also use charitynavigator website to check which companies are on the up and up.
Ayn Rand was against Altruism and define in a negative way, I believe Altruism is smart to try and reach, at the expense of one self because GOD provides Miracles, bonus, karma, a lot of humans know that if you are a good person they will at least help you with encouraging words. Ella you give so much so it makes me know that some people do give a damn and that makes all the difference.

I agree. I think it is ironic how the truly lazy diluted self righteous individuals who shed fake tears and thump their Chinese made American flag pin laden chests for the men and women who sacrifice their lives on the field of death for our so called freedom. While on the same token spit and yell at the homeless person who was one of those glorious soldiers. Did I mention what a joke all this is? LOL

I've given and received all those things and am extremely grateful for the experience.

tburke64: this is a great idea...any concrete advice is so much needed...I will definitely follow up on this...because it's very much doable at my end. 6 sleeping bags keep 6 people from freezing to death. This is very doable in my area - and I'm putting it into action starting Friday. Thanks so much! The cops usually don't harrass people outside of the downtown area here, but it gets very cold during winter + despite the wooded areas, you need a minimum of the right equipment...
My biggest advice is to hit the downtown and hand them out before dusk when they dissapear. I also ask homeless folks where to find others. If I can afford it, I tuck cash in the pockets of the coats.

I had a very bad week, and to top things off, I had to tell a 60 year old woman today, that her insurance company DENIED further care. She's on Cobra + unemployed, she's in pain + cannot even get her teeth extracted, much less getting a set of dentures. I feel like shit + it's keeping me awake,because there is nothing I can do to help her, even short term. She cannot get another job without some teeth :(
