This game's background setting (shown in the manual) was intensely political and amazingly fleshed out. There's just something romantic and fallen-heroic about an era of mercenary pilots in a war-torn region. More games like these, please.
@Juli9803 Busca en páginas abandonware como Ellosnuncaloharian o Underdogs, creo que para un juego tan antiguo necesitarás usar el DOSBOX, que emula ordenadores antiguos.
hey i have installed this great game on my pc but for some reason the speech does not come out!! there is music and everything but no speech. have installed speech patch too!! can some one help!!!
This game fucked me up. I had to free up so much memory using emm386 on a separate boot floppy. I fucking hated DOS but this game rocked once up and running!
I recall the introduction is more longer than this as there should be a scene where two Russian pilot in Mig 29s communicate to each other before this uploaded part rolls.
"I'm a fighter pilot, Tex...not a murderer"...God how many hours have I played this game ! The cinematics, the backgroung story in the handbook, the multiple 'ctrl + E' ejection, the low-fuel return to base...A lifetime !
I remember waiting and waiting for this game/combat sim. It was my first experience with a severely delayed (>1 year) release date. Fun though, and was worth the wait. It was also the first game I upgraded my PC to be able to play. And it was the first game I learned that no amount of equipment can make up for sloppy code. Was stuff beautiful. Thx for posting!
This was the very first game I ever played when computers first came into Mauritius. My father bought a PC and we played this game for hours. I used to wake up early morning to find my father still playing this game, so I used to sit next to him half asleep watching him kick ass!!! I still love this game, I wish they remade this whilst still keepin' it fun without adding graphical crap and long-learning curves!
yeah...i can still remember in the expansion pack, i had a lot of trouble gunning down those f4s, they are like rhinos with 200mm armour. wasted a lot of cannon shells before i made a kill.
damn right. I learned all my gunnery skills in this game (i was too dumb to learn how to use missiles, so i just closed to gun range on all targets.) Man i hope they port this game to STEAM or something (along with the first two wing commanders)
OMG, i cant believe this, i still can say the words from the intro, i used to be a 10 year old boy, i didnt even speak english, but i loved this game. i still dont understand the first 2 sentences though lol, what do they say? "damn it...." "backoff... "
It's called sarcasm slick; as in people watching this are more concerned with the nostalgia and good memories surrounding it rather than hearing your negative gripe about the soundfont quality.
I still have the manual (Sudden Death Magazine) and it was cool. It's interesting reading the timeline of past events leading up to the time that the game takes place, particularly now since the predictions didn't exactly come true; all of the states are still part of the U.S. and there are no mercenary squadrons in Turkey.
If you had the game in the form of floppies, 8 or 9 of them from last recollection, you needed the manual to get past a quiz for the copy protection during the installation.
Yes. In 1994, Iraq admits to a nuclear weapons capability, which prompts condemnation and authorization of force by the UN. The U.S. engages Iraq from Saudi Arabia under "Operation Fallout."
But, the strike results in collateral damage, including civilian casualties, which results in a Mid-eastern Jihad against Western nations and an oil embargo. The U.S. strikes Iraq and Iran in retaliation while addressing the oil shortage by drilling the ANWR.
Huh, yeah, I just re-read the manual (in pdf form -- my originals are somewhere at my mother's house, buried forever, I reckon). It's interesting how they got a lot of the themes right, even if the events were way off the money. ANWR is constantly on the verge of being opened for drilling, collateral damage in the mideast fuels anti-american sentiment, and domestically, the US spent the last 7 years cracking down on ALF and ELF and environmentalist groups. Nobody's seceded yet though...
I remember that this game required quite a bit of conventional memory in order to run.
I remember putting a lot of effort into tweaking the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files to optimize memory usage by the drivers, including enabling the use of upper memory so I could load the mouse and CD-ROM drivers there, freeing up conventional memory.
Plus, "Strike Commander" made use of its own protected memory driver, so it didn't need an extended memory driver (EMM386.EXE) to run.
@lupus4 This game is awesome. The only newer Game who is quiete good as Strike Commander and Pacific Strike is "Ace Combat 6". This game has got a great Story and really good graphics. I love it, like i loved Strike Commander and Pacific Strike.

Just why were all "american planes" painted in Israel desert camo? USA F-16 werent painted that way - at that point in time.
By the way, the playability came first in SCCD. I remember dodging missiles and at one time I ran out of fuel and so calculated trajectory I could still manage to land, tens of miles out the runway, almost stalling the plane.
As it wasn't meant to be a simulator, so that I even felt sorry for the enemies, because each one down meant that the endgame was closer.
erm. Because you weren't playing as the USA? You were playing as mercenaries, maybe you bought the planes off Israel? Maybe you took it to Al'asad's Thrifty Spray and coated the hardware in pearlescent local vogue? Factual recollection beats military know-how every day of the week ;-)
This is the best game ever, i soo wish they would do a remake, the mix of simulation and RPG is amazing, for all thoose who remember C:\SCCD in DOS ROCKS!!! run it in DOSBOX, i still got the original CD :)
Those who have played this game need not tell that this is a best game. Well those who have not played it, the game is as great as this video. I still play this game on PC using DOS BOX latest version.
same here...the one i downloaded from underdogs was the original disc version, which i couldn't quite figure out on my laptop. Dang, i wish i bought the CD and the Kilrathi Saga when i had the chance!
I havn't played this game in years. I think i played the entire game without turning on the radar (explains why the amrams never tracked). Easier to just shoot them down with cannon.
Just Completed it again... :D

yeah, but wasn't there something about a second Iraq war in the manual?

Yes. In 1994, Iraq admits to a nuclear weapons capability, which prompts condemnation and authorization of force by the UN. The U.S. engages Iraq from Saudi Arabia under "Operation Fallout."
