  • PS: Drummers that seriously overplay are not invited to contribute to multi-platinum selling recording projects. PERIOD.

  • All of you people talking about Dave "overplaying" crack me up. As though just sitting back, shutting up and "playing for the song" is what makes a great drummer. Give me a f**king break! I get so tired of hearing that line of shit from self-righteous pricks. I've been the drummer and now I'm the songwriter. I know both sides of the argument quite intimately. It's a balance. Yes... there are times to lay back and times to let loose. Dave played perfectly for Pearl Jam's raw, loose sound.

  • I think they kicked him from the band because he was overshadowing them with his sick drumming

  • any one know ther reason dave got out from pearl jam?

  • Why do people keep bashing Matt so hard? Grow up! It just didn't work out for them in the band. They've had Matt for almost 14 years now, because it works out for them, and that's what MATTers! (sorry couldn't help it.

And yeah, I don't think their new stuff beats the old stuff, but we won't get another ten, or another VS by just bringing back Dave.

More likely we'll get a break up. Stop whining, cause it's not gonna happen!

  • This dude can't solo..

  • Matt Cameron is a great drummer, and for Soundgarden was amazing. It's not his fault that Pearl jam went downhill, Jack Irons was the intermediary and wasn't as good as either of them. Pearl Jam just got old. Everything after Vitalogy has stunk with the exception of a few bright spots here and there.

  • @ericfontana Went downhill? Pearl Jam is a band for the fans. They don't need to hit the top charts. They evolved as a band, they been through so much together. In my opinion Pearl Jam is the best band the world has ever known.

  • @ericfontana stunk is a harsh word....but they have never reached the heights of their firtst two albums

  • Beautiful style, very powerful an his bass pedal work is as tight as a nut!

Was always a big noticeable loss from PJ for me!!

  • Well him playing along to Even Flow in the studio just proves it , PJ have never been the same since he was fired...Vedder was a Dick...

  • Wow .. thanks to youtube because didnt put dislike button for this video !

  • Thanx!! I be searching for this video since i saw in 98!! Dave Abbruzzes took the grundge playing to another level...he is my first inspiration!! Him and Danny Carey are kick ass drummers!! Greetings from Chile!!

  • Matt Cameron might be the best choice for pearl jam according to his personality and his musical input, but his drumming was never right for Pearl jam. Pearl jam with Matt cameron sounds with no feeling and boring, too boring. I hope Pearl jam gets a better drumming for its sound in the future.

  • Dave is a great drummer for sure but Matt is no slouch! I think Eddie knows what is best for his group better than the fans

  • Without a doubt the best Pearl Jam has had.

  • lsn PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASEE Whats the name of the first song played??

  • Dave was is to me still is the best drummer Pearl Jam has ever had. Jack Irons = not technical enough, Cameron = to tight, straightforward. Dave's way of playing is very open, a lot cymbal use, high hat

Too bad he didn't get along whatsoever with Vedder and Jeff

He played on two of my all time favorite albums.

  • Dave's face and that cymbal smash at 3:26 is the best thing I have ever witnessed.

  • GREAT!!! DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the drums on "Go" and "Rats" from the vs album are my favorites and its true, vs and vitalogy are their best albums, he's style is the best fit for album recordings, on the contrary Matt Cameron suits PJ on live concerts, he sounds the best on live.

  • even if he didnt do anything else. which are pearl jam's best records.......to no one's surprise, its the ones he drummed in. Youre going to tell me that backspacer was better than Vitalogy or Vs.........please. Dave Abbruzzese is one of the best drummers of all time

  • really don't miss dave and his omnipresent sabians, too busy, too loud for actual pearl jam songs..."just imo"

  • Dave Is amazing! darn u PJ

  • Matt Cameron is great but he sounds like a lifeless drum instructional video or a keyboard drum kit, metronomically perfect but none of the groove that dave had, when dave was fired pearl jam lost some the funk and starting to turn into a more basic rock band (dare i say "College Rock"?) Just have another look at unplugged dave is like a cook in his kitchen strirring the funky pots of groove!!!

  • I think this Bakedaddy747 is poor Matt Cameron himself :)

  • matt cameron es una mierda te extrañamos dave por ti aprendi a tocar la bateria

  • Dave Abbruzzese back to Pearl Jam, please!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • matt is great and all but i love this go so much more, the band was crazy kicking him out

  • anyone who thinks pearl jam is better w/o abbruzzese is mistaken..............

  • Love Pearl Jam. Love Matt Cameron. But Pearl Jam never sounded better or more visceral than with Dave A. Matt has a way of pulling back when you're ready to be pummeled that's massively disappointing. Listen to how crisp and heavy Dave's drums are on the rerecorded Even Flow. Every moment is filled with gratifying flourishes that never sound like affectations. Vs and Vitalogy are such beasts.

  • This debate just might go on forever, lol. It's all a matter of personal taste. I think Dave's style was too aggressive for PJ's changing style and he hit the cymbals too often like bakedaddy says. A song like Go sounded better with Dave but the beautiful music Pearl Jam have made since those early days would not sound as good if he were still the drummer. They needed someone with finesse and an appreciation for songwriting. Matt has written some amazing songs for PJ and for his other bands.

  • the rols of Pj are great

Eddie vedder: the lead man, the lyricist

Mike Mcready: lead, in charge of solos and shredding

Jeff Ament: keepin the groove, that little touch of jazz/blues in PJ

    Dave: characterization of the songs

and then just when u are thinking, "man, what the hell does stone gossard do so great, play rythm guitar? psh" BAM! he writes the music

  • Listen/watch the Evenflow recording from the video with Dave and compare that to any recent recording of Evenflow with Matt... Evenflow became super fast, stale with no soul. Matt is an amazing drummer, but Dave brought soul and groove to the music.

  • Though I do think matt is more talented, Dave clearly fits pearl jam better, just as matt fits soundgarden better

  • Sorry to burst your bubble, but Abruzzese didn't play on the album Ten. Vs. and Vitalogy were the only 2 albums Dave recorded with PJ.

  • I'm not a real PJ fan..... Says the guy who says Ed sucks. What a joke

  • @whygodrums10 oh wow you dumbfuck, i said EDDIE THINKS TO HIMSELF, he sucks, being dave, but i'll let him play in the band 3 more years. you're the dumbass acting like you know eddie, but don't even know the reason they fired dave. THEY DIDN'T GET ALONG, how else can i explain it? now go argue with some little kids because you sound like one.

  • I honestly cannot STAND watching him play. I just wanna push him off the set and yell at him to stop hitting the ducking crashes. Jesus christ what an obnoxious prick. No wonder Ed fired him. Cameron is a professional behind the kit, and he still hits harder than Dave without even showing it.

  • @whygodrums10 fuck you, why are you on the video than, like i said to some other douchebag, it says DAVE ABBRUZZESE. you honestly, are no pearl jam fan if you think that's why he was fired. why wouldn't eddie do it earlier if it was because of his playing? yes, eddie thinks to himself, he sucks, but i'll let him play with us for about 3 more years. They didn't get along well, that's why he was fired, not because of his playing. Stop talking out of your ass.

  • One of the best drummers over the world !!

  • this guy's groove is insane. always in the pocket. sure, he overplays....but he's fun to listen to, and just as fun to watch. i mean, carter beauford overplays like CRAZY, but he's sick too...matt cameron is very good techincally, but i think he's too much of a metronome, personally. he's solid, and he's got chops, but i think he's boring. too standard, not enough groove. too dry. dave fucking owns

  • @heymanniceshot1 he's just not right for pj, he was a beast with soundgarden

  • @bakedaddy747 Pearl Jam gave him the freedom to do what he wants.. He produces and has been playing with a few different artists. He toured recently with Steve Salas.. Dude.. Don't be ignorant when you have no clue what you're taking about. He sold 35 million albums with Pearl Jam.

  • @Brento44 i would love to see this guy do the same. they know nothing about drumming, they really do have no clue what they're talking about, they haven't made 1 correct statement about dave.

  • @Brento44 - I agree. He played what was best for the style that PJ was doing. Did this guy expect him to play like Ringo Starr on those albums? No offense to Ringo, he was ahead of his time in his technique, dynamics, and nuances. But what Dave did on the PJ albums was perfect. Just because he hasn't played, recorded, and toured with any bands of U2 status doesn't mean he's not making an impact somewhere. Some people are never happy, and they're all on YouTube bitching. Cheers!

  • @bakedaddy747

True! Dave hits the crashes so much it becomes annoying! He'd never create a drum line as the one Matt created for Jesus Christ Pose, for example.

  • @lgalicki if it annoys you so much, why do you continue to listen to it and bitch? go listen to pj with matt, because this video says dave abbruzzese, not matt cameron.

  • @itaintlikethat90

Well, I watched it only once and got annoyed.

  • @bakedaddy747 if you were gonna be so damn ignorant, why'd you come on a video that says Dave Abbruzzese? You don't know anything about him, so just stop talking shit.

  • @bakedaddy747 Every great drummer adds millions of ghost notes between accents. Learn about drumming before you comment.

  • @bakedaddy747 There's no "why", no "if".. Pearl Jam's best stuff was done with Dave. Ask someone on the street to sing a Pearl Jam song, it'll be one Dave played on.

  • @bakedaddy747 wma dude, and say he doesn't know how to compliment a song with his drumming.

  • @bakedaddy747 your a lame ass motherfucker! you don't know shit..why don't you Google "Dave Abbruzzese", and for starters read his Wiki..it doesn't mean you're not a great drummer if you are not in a "great band". There are so many great artists/musicians out there, that are not in a "great" band..learn your ABC's and 123's before you post shit like that.

  • @bakedaddy747 Pearl Jam albums get worse as they go, thats just how it is and it's nothing to do with the drummer, but Dave Krusen and Dave Abbruzzese play on the 3 best PJ albums, no question. He's also a better drummer than Matt Cameron.

And finally, what bands was Robert Plant in that were amazing in the 30 years since Led Zeppelin broke up? I guess he's a bad singer and frontman hey? You're an idiot, shut the fuck up.

  • @bakedaddy747 jajajajajajaja 5 million crash cymbals, that's true.

  • @bakedaddy747 .. 5 million crash cymbals ? But it's like wine, depends on what you like. Personally, after the BadMotorFinger and SuperUnknown albums old Matty C started placing me into a virtual coma. Pearl Jam lost 40% of their stage power without Abbruzzese as he pushed that band hard. What professionals dump a rare king hitter and replace him with "JACK IRONS" ??!!!! I saw PJ in Sydney 1995' with Irons on the stool. Both shows were absolutely weak as piss. All hail Dave and Sim Cain.

  • @bakedaddy747 And don't forget the Green Romance Orchestra stuff as well .. and the tribute albums he was involved in .. And all the bands he's produced .. And yes, all the IMF stuff he's been doing .. He's been busy, you just haven't bothered to look ..

  • @bakedaddy747 He went out for a Solo carreer, man :/

  • @bakedaddy747 Seriously, you want to hate on Dave? Get a life.

  • @bakedaddy747 a band is as good as it's drummer .

That's why Pearl Jam are never the same after dave.

Like The Clash when they kicked Topper Headon , they got demolished .

PJam now just sound old . Don't get me wrong , good but old .

Matt maybe was good for soundgarden , not for Pearl Jam .

  • @JohnEpi1973 Thats why Metallica sux. :D

  • @bakedaddy747 Haha!! I strongly disagree. Matt Cameron is a great drummer but Dave kicks his ass on the earlier stuff.

  • @Brento44 I'm not saying that Dave isn't a great drummer, but Pearl Jam has become much tighter and more melodic with Matt Cameron. Matt is a much tighter drummer with a better ear for "playing what is needed'. Dave played 500 ghost notes per bar and hit cymbals like an obsession. YES, it worked for VS and Vitalogy, but you can't keep making the same records without growing.

Can you imagine how jacked up Soundgarden would have sounded with Dave playing drums? Awful!!!

  • hells yea... No comparison with dave and matt. Dave crushes him in PJ. However, Matt is one of my favorite drummers.. His work with SG is untouchable

  • @Brento44

  • @Brento44 I agree. Dave kicks Matt Cameron's ass all the way, from back then to forever! hehehe Matt Cameron sounds only good in Soundgarden, and that's it! his drum solos are so simple, as simple as his setup..sorry Matt Cameron fans..you got it wrong.

  • @Brento44 i agree with you man, Dave is just a perfect rock drummer, i actually use a lot of things he does on my playing style...

Matt is good but he doesn´t do anything that you want to explore in your style...

Dave´s performance on Unplugged kicks ass...

  • @Brento44 Dave would kick his ass on ALL their stuff!

  • @bakedaddy747 life long Pearl Jam fan here and its not close. Dave is so much better suited for Pearl Jam. Matt is pretty ordinary.

  • @bakedaddy747 matt cameron is on a different level dude. if you actually listen cameron plays abbruzzese shit awful. and im not just saying that cause cameron is my fav drummer. pearl jams music isn't off tempo like alot of soundgardens shit. its just black and white pretty much.

  • @bakedaddy747 Matt Cameron is a great drummer but, he belongs in Soundgarden!!! Pearl Jam is holding his playing back, and he tends to ruin great Pearl Jam moments with over done fills... Dave was perfect for Pearl Jams style...Cameron is not.

  • @bakedaddy747 HAHAHAHA MATT CAMERON IS A PUSSY COMPARED TO DAVE...

  • @bakedaddy747 That's why Cameron can't play WMA to save his life. If you like Pearl Jam when they had energy than Dave is your man. He was booted because Eddie didn't get along with him. That's it. I've seen Pearl Jam live and believe me Cameron was after beer on my reasons to check them out. He's a good drummer but not even half the energy or power that Dave had. Cameron is like a studio drummer. Dave had a custom line of sticks back in the day. Respect that. Pearl jam went downhill with Matt.

  • dave was their best drummer, but cameron is the only other dude to do the job

  • thats one coordinated mf man.

  • amen to that dave was there best drummer

  • FUCK YOU ,EDDIE!

  • Whoever says this guy is better than Matt Cameron doesn't know anything about drumming at all!

  • @lgalicki Matt is BORING. Dave had style.

  • @argus525 Dave overplayed. Dave got fired. Dave didn't play drums to fit the tune. Dave was obnoxious. Dave is a good drummer, but he's not even in Matt Cameron's ballpark.

  • @bakedaddy747 you are 100% wrong. he got fired because he wanted everything to be commercial and that was not what pearl jam was about. if he "overplayed", they would have fired him much earlier.

  • @lgalicki Thank you! Finally, someone who knows about good drumming. Most of these people probably think that Travis Barker is drummer of the year. lol.

  • @bakedaddy747 no, that's just someone who is as ignorant as you are. You were bound to find someone like that eventually.

  • 1:53 - 2:20

    AWESOME.

    thanks for the upload

  • Quelqu'un sait pourquoi dave c fait virer ? Ct juste parceque sont corespondai pas a No Code?

  • Biggest mistake of their lives

  • eddie fu+++ off dave have to come back

  • Ct lui le meilleur !

  • Bien oui!!! Ca ces't un vrai drummer!!

  • dave is the man!!!!!!! he was the best drummer 4 pj. i do think that jack is better 4 pj then matt tho. matt is ALWAYS on top of the beat. dave and jack like 2 lay back on the beat. and that brings the vibe!!!

  • Please Eddie, let Dave back to pearl jam!!

  • no offense optimuse sobrinus but dave is better than jack and matt c .his Style made pearl jam's sound in ten and vs and they have never been the samee since he leaft

  • Matt Cameron,Dave Abruzesse and Jack Irons are great drummers, all of them, for me Matt in Soundgarden is one of my favorites, but for Pearl Jam i like Jack Irons better than Dave,he has more dinamics and goes better with the song,Dave always plays very, very hard .

  • @OptimuseSobrinus

listen to immortality, or black (live with dave) or elderly woman or nothingman

dave's fuckin sick, jack first of all hasnt got the ability to play withthe intensity that dave has, doesnt have the chops or the feel. jack irons is honestly just a shit drummer.. and dont talk about musical differences being subjective or whatever, dave is a talented, versatile musician whereas jack irons is just a shit drummer who got lucky

  • Take it from someone who's seen PJ several times.....Dave's the best drummer they ever had!

  • Dear Pearl Jam:

    I MISS DAVE.

  • jajaja everyone miss him :D

  • Listen to Green Romance Orchestra,

  • I love Dave. But PJ is still awesome! Matt is a great, powerful, improv drummer. He kicks ass! I've listened to tons of live stuff and they're one of the best bands around, hands down.

  • Im the biggest dave fan, hes been my fav drummer since i was a kid, i also dig manu kache and vinne caluita, but daves intensity is crazyy and his chops. Ive never listen to Pearl jam without dave because there is noone that can play that music.like Mitch michell and hendrix. Matt Cameron is TERRIBLE in the band. he fucks up every song. He belongs to SOUNDGARDEN. I personally want to tell who fired dave, that they fucked up and the band sucks dick now, and stop tryin to be LED ZEPPLIN,

  • Comment removed

  • @bradysnare6457 Sorry to say it, but Eddie fired Dave.

  • The best drummer Pearl Jam ever had. They shouldn't have fired him. This guy is so talented! Pearl Jam has sunk day by day after he parted ways.

  • Dave Abbruzzese and Morgan Rose are two of the best and under rated drummers ever!!!

  • Not to put Matt cameron down, I think he's doing a great job,but Dave Abbruzzese was THE drummer for Pearl Jam. Their sound changed so much since Dave was no longer part of the group. I don't think they'll ever have that old sound again.

  • @bigmars72 THANK YOU! So glad that someone realizes this. After Vs. especially, they REALLY changed and that is where Dave was FULL-ON.

  • thanks for posting never realized how good he was. knew he was good. didnt know he was that good.

  • He's the best.. My fav drummer of all time..

  • poor guy. So much talent and seems like just a nice guy. The guys in the band were just assholes to him. really feel for the guy...

  • why , what happened to him?

  • @antiacido2 He sucked, so Ed fired him.

  • Slammer...

  • i could watch him drum all day and never get bored....lot of intense energy man

  • Wow.. Thanks You Tube for removing HQ...

  • Give an address so anyone can get it from and f### ' em .

  • Great video, great drummer.

  • Favourite drummer, great guy, I want to have his style

  • Dave fans! Hes touring right now with Steve Salas! watch?v=7DlN3JqEGJM

  • I really liked Dave, but I feel like he was too busy, especially on the cymbals. He didn't lay back, even when he should have.

  • TOTALLY aggreded to farmuse opinion, tooooo busy on cimbals part , that's true probably he fits totally with early PJ stile, but also unable to grow up with the band in the last decade(did u have lost dogs inlay chart??? read wath eddy said about "in the moonlight" song)...JUST MY OPINION... dave is a awesome drummer anyway

  • God I miss him in PJ....he made their sound so much wider, and it had depth....

  • I have to agree that Dave the best choice for Pearl Jam. Not trying take away from the other drummers but there is only one drummer that grooved to Pearl Jam. I wish things were different. The new pearl jam material doesn't do it for me. Dave is an inspirational drummer at that time/even now. Dave if you are reading this....Thanx. There's only one Dave!

  • I can't stop watching this video. It is just so inspirational.

None of the lame new stuff from PJ (I still love them thou). I wish he could be back at least for a tour.

  • Dave is a badass!!! the best drummer in Pearl Jam ever!!! Jack Irons???... my fucking balls!!!

  • the next best thing to listening to dave is watching him, he just unites with his kit

  • Please post more from The American Dream.

  • come backkkkkkkkk!!!!! vedder said come backkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!

since pj fired him they had never been the same energy in the band :(

best fucking drumer everrrrrr everrrrr! and best drummer of the 90's

    peace

  • beast drumper from pearl jam ever

  • Man, THANKS A LOT for this sharing!!!

have you seen Matt Cameron Wearing the Rat sweater on the new "the fixer" video like Dave did during the MTV unplugged back in the 90's?

He will never be like Dave, ever!!!

BTW, the fixer is kinda lame, hope the rest of the album is more Pearl Jam like.

  • Listen to it a couple more times dude, it'll grow on you.

  • I doubt Matt is trying to be like Dave. He's his own man.

  • The quality isn't THAT bad. And this is an insightful piece. I've never heard Dave really speak, but then drummers usually are the quiet professionals...except maybe for Tommy Lee. He was/is a great drummer. I haven't heard anything from him since he left Pearl Jam. But I do like Matt too, especially when Soundgarden was still around. They played some interesting time signatures. Just sayin'...

  • He's cute

  • hes the reason why i use a 12" snare

  • Good man!! I subbed to your vids!

  • Dave the King!!!!!

  • imagine dave as a swordman! LOLS he will cut his enemies in no time with those speed. he swings so fast!!

  • I think the real issue was that Dave was the only person in the band that was openly calling Ed out on things such as his openly drunk routine and the so-called "I hate fame" act.

Dave offered the most power and dynamics to my favorite band. Sometimes I really do think that Jack Irons is really the forgotten drummer even though, to me, he was the second best. I mean, the drumming on In My Tree, not to mention Brain of J, was incredible! Matt? He's just adequate.

  • He is the drummer who makes the difference. Absolutely amazing!

  • Sorry but Matt Cameron just doesn't fit in with Pearl Jam's old songs. He's a great drummer for Soundgarden but he can't keep up with either Krushen or Abbruzzese on such songs as Porch, Even Flow and Alive.

Saying that, he's fitting pretty well with Pearl Jam's new post-grunge style rock/punk rock style.

  • Watching Dave's absolutely beautiful arm motion in the unplugged Pearl Jam show (1992) changed my life a little. It's like the guy's under water.

  • Agreed! Great, great drummer! Great guy too!

  • YEAH!

  • Pearl Jam sucks cock without Dave

  • You are 110% wrong!

  • Dave is the best drummer PJ ever had! i'am fully agree with you all!

  • I preferred Dave's drumming by far. He was always in motion - no simple patterns for him. He used his whole kit ALL of the time.

  • when pearl jam got rid of Abbruzzese i just lost all interest...

  • DAVE, WE ALL MISS YOU A LOT MASTER!!!!!

  • Amazing video! Thanks for the upload!

  • best drummer PJ ever had!

  • Daves way of playing even flow, is just one of those songs no one will ever be able to get perfectly

  • this is nice footage i never thought i'd see.

  • its great how he uses every cymbals so frequently........the whole sounds got so much weight......makes u wanna get up and jump.........bang ur head

  • I'm having fun with this!! It's good to see people sharing opinions!!!

  • I think it's interesting how much debate there is about Cameron vs. Dave. The bottom line is this: Dave is the past of PJ. Great while he lasted. Matt is the present and preseumably future of the band. Either enjoy him with the band or not. I prefer the former. Don't you think the band knows what's best for them? No disrespect to Dave.

  • I agree 100%.

  • Then both of you haven't got a clue. Facts are facts Dave is irrelevent. He is no where to be found except in your lives. What GRO? The fact that has had a handleful of gigs in the last 15 yrs. Ask your common friends who couldnt care about music in general and ask them who they think is a more successful drummer.

  • FYI, He's been drumming, producing, runs a studio.. busy being a father. Successful.. the guy doesn't have to work another day in his life because of what he did with Pearl Jam. He was on 2 out of 3 of Pearl Jam's best selling albums. Changed a generation of drummers. He lives life the way he wants. Fuck me, I think he's pretty successful. Done more then you and I ever will..

  • This is weird arguing about this but oh well. I love Neil Peart but your argument about less is more makes no sense when you cite a guy who uses a 100 peice kit like neil. Also grunge/alternative wasnt really Daves passion so its no suprise he didnt resurface in some lame 90,s alternative group. He went back to his funk/jam band style which is not the most commercial. Pearl Jam lost that funky groove when he left thats what i think people miss.Listen to rats 94 and 08 hear pj,s decline.

  • Oh I agree silly arguing but we do it because we love music and we love PJ. Anyway the reason I say Neil or Carter is because those types of songs allow the drums to be the primary instrument. Yes its ironic. But I feel that PJ was never that type of band. Dave in my opinion tried to carry the songs but both Ed and Jeff didnt want that. PJ may not be as popular mainstream. But they are one of the few remaining and still make some of the best written material around.

  • I see what your saying, but why would they keep dave for the entire ten tour then record vs, then tour vs and record vitology with him. It took 2 records for them to see he overplayed. That argument just makes no sense to me. Dave was getting to much attention, another comment talked about how after a 93 show everyone leaving was talking about the drums. Vedder was getting upstaged and his drunk/martyr persona was looking silly while the band was rocking to new heights. I miss this era pj.

  • Wow, Very well said!
