If you look at Delaware, that's why so many Fortune 500 companies incorporate in Delaware, because of their low corporate tax rate and less regulations. Higher taxes and high regulation drive businesses somewhere else where they can get lower taxes and less regulation.
There should be a standard/federal corporate tax rate. 0%--as is the case in Texas--is unacceptable. How about this deal? We lower the corporate tax rate and every corporation must pay income tax, as well as discontinue shipping low-skill jobs overseas. Currently, Michigan is the only state that uses a VAT for businesses. There is so much consumption in the U.S., a VAT would probably generate more revenue than a standard income tax would anyway. Now, there would need to be exemptions for food, medicine, and necessities, but everything else would be fair game on the corporate and individual levels.

Once they file and claim their standard deduction and any other credits or deductions, they have zero federal income tax. They get a refund, often for more than what was taken out of their paychecks during the year. Now, in Europe, everybody pays VAT taxes, regardless if you're poor or rich. That's the only way you can maintain a nanny state.

Higher taxes and high regulation drive businesses somewhere else where they can get lower taxes and less regulation.

Currently, Michigan is the only state that uses a VAT for businesses. There is so much consumption in the U.S., a VAT would probably generate more revenue than a standard income tax would anyway. Now, there would need to be exemptions for food, medicine, and necessities, but everything else would be fair game on the corporate and individual levels.

@MitchofSmeg Most people making minimum wage, dont pay any income taxes at all. At least 45% of wage earners dont pay any federal income taxes. Once they file and claim their standard deduction and any other credits or deductions, they have zero federal income tax. They get a refund, often for more than what was taken out of their paychecks during the year. Now, in Europe, everybody pays VAT taxes, regardless if you're poor or rich. That's the only way you can maintain a nanny state.

For 300 years the great civilisations of the Middle East did continue their scientific work, but eventually Islam strangled the wellspring of creativity and innovation. Like a grotesque, Islam dresses itself in the finery of its victims.

@ritchloui It could also be argued that Islam caused that wellspring of creativity. Because at the time the interpretations of the Qu'ran pushed free-though and tolerance. It wasn't until a more restrictive interpretation came along (and a couple of attacks from outside sources) that that changed. Also the period is arguable 500-600 years not 300. Your problem isn't with Islam it is with fundamentalism, which is a problem with any religion.

For at least 300 years Islam enjoyed the crest of a wave of scientific reasoning the flourished within its newly conquered civilisations. NONE of these great contributions occurred within Arabia of course. The concept of 'Arab' appears to be very malleable; often it refers to the peoples of the entire ME and Islamic Africa. Obviously this 'Arabisation' is a sensitive subject.

@firemonic From the Arab perspective Islam was their ticket to the world. To them everything is owed to Islam. They refuse to acknowledge the earthly source of Mohammed's 'knowledge' ie the widely disseminated knowledge of the advanced civilisations of the ME & beyond. Islam reflects its origins from a militaristic nomadic culture. It laws and values sit uncomfortably with sedentary civilisation. This is why the once vibrant civilisations of the ME have stagnated over the past 1,000 years.

@ritchloui It's not actually possible for a empire as large as the Ottoman empire to contribute nothing. Without it trade between the east and west would have been significantly lessened. And really what are you on? In order to survive for as long as it did it had to have something going for it. Like a fairly high degree of tolerance for different ethnicities.

South America is about 17840000 Square kilometres The combined Arab states is about 10987685 square kilometres. Are you sure you know what an Arab is?
