I may go favorite-hopping once a week, but Elfen Lied has been my all-time favorite anime for two years now, and I think it'll sstay my favorite for a LONG time to come.
The anime had a very unique, and slightly peculiar essence to it. It was a mixture of dozens of genres, all encircling around the main goal which the anime managed to achieve. It was dark without getting gloomy, it was slow-paced without getting boring, and it was smart without getting full of itself. Manglobe's best TV series with Samurai Champloo.
manglobe makes THE best anime's and their intro's are fucking amazing for those who dont know these are the same people who made Deadman Wonderland if you havent checked it out do so the style of these animators is so very amazing and very very underrated!
- from episode 1 of Ergo proxy (translated from Italian, a poem by Michelangelo Buonarroti. now it makes sense to me why the "Collective" are actually statues made by Michelangelo: Dusk, Dawn, Day, and Night.
Rewatched this anime because I can't find any good ones anymore these days. Always those damn kiddie perverted animés lately. This was truely a masterpiece, hopefully not the last.
This anime blew my mind. I loved how Re-l developed so subtly. I love Vincent's struggle to find himself. I love Pino to fucking bits. and the ending was beyond satisfying for me that I can still imagine the continuation of the story. BEAUTIFUL. <3
@xxDaisuki Well..theres some Good looking animes: Deadman Wonderland Angel Beats Mirai Nikki Must watch animes: Elfen Lied HIghschool of the dead Must read mangas: Berserk (top 1!!) Vinland Saga Claymore i know i forgot something ;) ..alot..
Ergo Proxy is truly a character-based anime, which is why the action, although there and some truly badass sequences, was never a central focus. It was truly about the struggles of the Proxies and their children. I loved the ending though.
I really liked the first half of this show but after this one point the story started doing mind trip episodes that never seemed to have much meaning. the history of the world was revealed in an annoying game show and the plot took jumps forward. the first half was soooooo good though
@tongithy the difference is though is those barly count as ming fucks because they actually have some weight and actual points to them. they ask questions that we might all ask ourselfs someday. unlike something say like NGE which chucked in a fuckton of mind fs because they did'nt have any other shit to fill the time.
@NeedsMoarShrooms Nope, Gankutsuou was made by GONZO, while Ergo Proxy was made by Manglobe. Manglobe are also the creators of Samurai Champloo, Deadman Wonderland (the anime, not the manga), and The Sacred Blacksmith just to name a few. Though it's quite possible people from both companies worked on either show, I have no idea lol. :)
@CrimsoNShadovv The end? The first 5 minutes down to the last 5 minutes was pure mind fucking lol. Ive seen this show 10 times over and i still dont fully understand the story. Theres just sooo much my brain cannot handle it :P
Hot damn. Someone managed to get it uploaded again. Been so long since there was a decent quality copy of this OP available. The damn thing was fingerprinted and automatically blocked on upload. I even tried myself once.
This whole opening is fantastic, but the part that is really beautiful to me is the part from 0:54 to 1:02. That piece of animation just looks so stunning and shows such emotion in my eyes. GOD, I miss this show!
These are the top two of the few animated series I can appreciate. Regarding anime: I hate anime really. At least I’ve always thought so, maybe I just have an acquired taste.
I wouldn’t call it “Gothic”, though it was exactly what I thought at first too. The world is futuristic, extremely sterile, and in a world of white and grey Re-l's blue eyeshadow is actually the most colourfull statement imagineable. Also, none of the characters are very “Gothic” in character either.
I'm about halfway through EP, and so far I’d say Gunslinger Girl comes closest in quality, though they are miles apart in both style and setting. If you are going to watch GSG, pay attention to what season you’re watching. In short: season one is un-animeish, European even, brilliant and deliberately senseless, while season two is flat, supressed, conformist, but also story driven and confronting. If you dare take on season two, make sure that you watch the OVA’s at the end.
they don't make anime like this anymore. love the opening and is it me towards the middle of the song it sounds like the opening to smallville. they need to go back to these type styles of anime ever thing is so cliche now.
@baldswagg79 I Thought the same thing from the moment I heard it. I let friends who watch smallville listen to this and asked what they thought without saying anything. They said it sounds like someone with an accent singing a cover of the smallville op!
@ssjwes lol thats something else. this is a great show i wish they would do more of these types of anime. i mean shows are good but they are very cliche now a days.
@baldswagg79 Hey man you should go back in time and watch those animes! Believe me the new animes in the future are probably going to continue to suck :(
@Dameit15 i got all the old stuff i liked full metal brother hood the only thing i wanting to watch now is REDLINE seems like it has potential.B/c its all hand drawn like the old animes back in the day.
I have just seen episode 1, have no idea what's going on. Too much stuff going on at once. Interesting anime but it has to be the most gothic one I have seen yet or ever will. Can someone give me an idea of what this anime is about?
@modernmarvel Loads and loads of philosophy hidden in a well made story line... everything won't make sense before the last chapter. That's when everything connects and they make you want to view again all the episodes. It's a great anime, a bit slow maybe, but again, it's full of philosophy and some psychology. If you're interested some bit in some of those, watch it whole.
As someone said, "Busy Doing Nothings" is for me, the pinnacle of the series.
Ok, I'm dying here. Does anyone know of any current anime (or within the last year or two) which even comes close to this quality? I can't find any, and I'm worried the days of anime which actually makes me think and broadens and changes my perspective on the world are over and done... I'm asking here because I trust that if you "got" this anime you'll know what I mean.
@DisenchantedLedZep Steins;Gate is a good recomendationn, despite having some loose stitches here and there in the plot. Though to be fair, doens't grasp so successfully the same achievements of Ergo Proxy. I'd really like to know if Chris and Okarin actually managed to become close once again. The bastard doesn't deserve such a cool woman ^^'
Just came here after seeing the AMV "Devil's Lullaby", and saw the scene where Monad murders the mother and baby. It's after that I simply had to know what this series was. So far I have been greeted with: Visions of a woman who overdid her goth eyeliner, and some guy that looks the bastard child of Zangetsu from Bleach and Izanagi from Persona 4.
And people wondered why I stopped watching anime. Sheesh...
@RecklessFire29 Pffft Comparing Ergo proxy to Bleach is a fucking insult, my friend. All the details, story, characters of this anime or just so amazingly well crafted. This anime ranks at my top. It completely blew me away, much better than Evangelion, which I holded as my favourite for so many years.
Are there any decent recent cyberpunk animes being released? After Ergo Proxy nothing more ever came out. Heard about Exaella but it seems it's never going to be released.
Dai Sato really is an awesome story writer. Two things I love about his stoies are the deep character developments and the philosophical aspects. I've noticed this in Ergo Proxy and Eureka Seven, which were both written by him.
Glad I saw your comment, I was just thinking about Eureka Seven and how it was the only decent anime I've seen in a while, and hadn't realized this and that were both Dai Sato. Thanks for connecting the two for me!
@hekticnate69 i watched the show... it was ok.. what i mean is without comparing it to anything it is great.. good twists and the ending begs for a sequel (though i doubt it)... but comparing it to ghost in the shell.... ghost in the shell wins. but still not bad... kinda slow at the beginning but picks up.
@indiguneishon It's a really emotional anime, with a good plot to compliment the emotions and how slow it unwinds. You have to have some patience for the anime though as I said it slowly unwinds, but in the end you'll be pleased with the way it turns out. I think you should watch it if you have the time.
I got to admit, the most impacting scene that shake my emotions was the one in the Pino's friend funeral, when Re-L asks Pino if she felt something, right away Pino tells her that yes, that she was sad. Then Re-L express that she felt sorry for Pino due to the unhappyness, but then Pino says that she must not, because now that she knew sadness she was happier. My wife and I dropped some silent tears.
This is the only japanese anime that artistically got sense.
There is no silly lame acting (you know, when the drawing artists deforms the character in a really silly way), the characters are cold in the end of the world, gratefully no one sings in the episodes, it is beautifully metaphor based (thats why I think that the people that dislike this could be silly american kids).
I've heard that people dislike this anime because quote: "Nothing happens in it."
I find that sentiment utterly ridicilous. The plot is structured solidly, the characters are memorable and the "boring" episodes just emphasize the atmosphere of the dead world, making Ergo Proxy one of my favorite animations in years.
This autumn a channel in my country will pass this anime, OMG!!! I can't look forward to watching it on TV x3 (and luckly the voice acting is very well done *-*)
when i watch this video it gives me that witch hunter robin vibe and vice versa. I believe its because their not that much into action but mood of story telling and character inter actions. which makes them great.
Man, I remember being SO excited to watch this anime when I first saw the trailer. The animation style, the emotions, the mind f**ckery. It's definitely one anime show you CANNOT forget. <3
I like this show not only because its unique, but also for the fact that in many cases some of the characters look like real people. Great animation style.
@BisayaBoii I cry now also thinking at this anime and this magic song.Me also looking the firs episode I don't listened the magic of this song but since the last episode my life is changed and now is based on the making of my dreams thinking to Re-l and her world and beleving in the future and in its possibilities.I love this anime, I love this song <3
This is the best anime opening I've ever heard. Watching anime, you sometimes get bored of the opening and skip it if you're watching it on DVD. This is one of the few openings where I absolutely refuse to do so. God, i love this anime. This anime is up there with FLCL.
@sterlingcooper2000 From what i gather, the proxies are a substitute of 'the Creator' and were supposed to help mankind rebuild. They helped build the dome cities and the AutoReivs. As for the state of the world, they tried to use methane hydrate as an alternate fuel source and it resulted in a disaster that destroyed 85% of life on the planet. That's what I put together form the show anyway, so odds are I may be wrong, and if I am, don't listen to me.
You know dudes and ladies... I have seen many anime in my lifetime and still continue to do so.But sometimes i re-watch anime because I miss some of them and want to re-experience them and that's exactly why i saw this anime about 5 - 6 times lol i duno why but this anime story, atmosphere and especially soundtrack i love the most...
@RavenPrincess13 It's kind of hard to explain this anime. It's one of those kind of anime that makes everyone's opinion different to others. I assure you this is a great anime and it's - probably - the darkest anime I've seen.

I've seen many amazing openings to anime.
This opening wasn't great at first to me but after about the 5th episode, this opening made me feel new emotions.
By the last episode, I knew that this is one of the best, most powerful openings to an anime I've ever seen.

@BisayaBoii this seems more like the opening to a serious drama tv show then an anime, which is why it works i think

Wow, that is a powerful opening, such passion and spirit.

This is the best anime opening I've ever heard. Watching anime, you sometimes get bored of the opening and skip it if you're watching it on DVD. This is one of the few openings where I absolutely refuse to do so. God, i love this anime. This anime is up there with FLCL.

Este Opening me inspiro en tantas cosas...
Sin dudas, el mejor Opening para mi, con mayor elaboracion y detalles que son dificiles de notar, pero que se percibe mejor al sentirlos.

can someone explain what was the proxy's purpose, i don't get it, and why is the world fucked up, they never explained that.
sterlingcooper2000 8 months ago
@sterlingcooper2000 From what i gather, the proxies are a substitute of 'the Creator' and were supposed to help mankind rebuild. They helped build the dome cities and the AutoReivs. As for the state of the world, they tried to use methane hydrate as an alternate fuel source and it resulted in a disaster that destroyed 85% of life on the planet. That's what I put together form the show anyway, so odds are I may be wrong, and if I am, don't listen to me.

RavenPrincess13 9 months ago
@RavenPrincess13 It's kind of hard to explain this anime. It's one of those kind of anime that makes everyone's opinion different to others. I assure you this is a great anime and it's - probably - the darkest anime I've seen.
