  • Guitar player is Rene Hall. Ted Brinson was much more a bass player, and his simple home studio is where many hits were recorded such as "Earth Angel", etc. Plus, the style of playing in the second tune really shows many of Rene's trademarks such as glissando/vibrato licks, etc.

  • The second number was nice and snappy. Thanks.

  • There are photos of Ted Brinson and Rene Hall on the internet, and this guy looks more like Brinson, with his longer thinner nose. (And doesn't sound like Hall, for that matter.)

  • guitarist sounds like a charlie christian clone!!

  • Rene Hall, as nickntrish said. See jazzdocumentation.ch/john_young/young.html

  • bobjazz11 correction: these aren't the TWELVE clouds of joy. Just the 'clouds of joy'.

  • Another source says Alvino Rey.

  • If he's doubling on trombone it could be Eddie Durham. Tiny Grimes played a tenor 4-string guitar and Floyd Smith a 6 string and Hawaiian slide.

  • The first number is "Basie's Boogie". It is posted elsewhere on YT.

  • What marvellous music !!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I think it's Tiny Grimes

  • I can't tell you who the guitarist is, nor can I tell you the songs, but the guitarist does not disappear, he is merely obscured. In the first number, he is standing and playing and the bandstand is missing someone in the third chair from the right, front row. In the second number, he is back at his chair. He is blocked by the bandleader and the dancers, but you can see him in the far shots and his arm is visible at 4:35.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • dat guitarist doubles up on trombone on other tracks from this gig not posted here . you dig mi

  • the second song sounds like Gene Phillips in guitar,

  • Tremendous second number, BIg Band R an B, top class piano, what a mover.

    Thanks Bob,

  • I think the guitarist may be Rene Hall...

  • I think it's "Apollo Groove".

  • I've seen this movie before...swingin'

  • Think it could be al casey? He's the guy who played with Fats Waller?

  • Hey, where's Mary Lou? ;)

  • Don't know who it is but, based on the band photos in Andy's autobiography, it's not Floyd Smith.

  • I'm inclined to agree with you - I haven't updated this clip but I'm now sure that neither of these two numbers is 'Floyd's Blues' - which I now know has a much slower 'After Hours' tempo - So .... anyone got any ideas: Who is the guitarist; and what's the title of these two numbers?

    Bob
