Be sure to check your local game laws. I don't know of any state in the U.S. that allows hunting with a .22 rim fire. I also suggest you take a hunter's safety course before you go hunting. They'll advise you on the local laws and safe practices for firearms.
ok im a beginner hunter and im 13 so i need to know what kind of gun i need my uncle says i need a .240 and my friends say i need a .270 can someone help me
I'm no expert but I say listen to your Uncle. A .243 will do the job without a doubt if you place your shots correctly and it won't have the kick that the .270 will which is important. To much kick often times will make you involuntarily flinch which will cause inaccuracy and that's not good for you or the deer. A .243 is a flat shooter and crazy accurate for the distances you'll be shooting while hunting.
A scrap is usually made not only for territory but when the rut starts they'll make a scrap and then does will come along and piss in it to let the bucks no they are ready to make fawns lol. I saw a doe even crap on a scrap once lol.
Just be absolutely sure what you're shooting at. Make sure you have a good bullet stop behind your target (ie. hill) and don't shoot at a running deer. It usually ends badly.
yea just trying to get my hunting license i go for it april 8th 9th and 10th hopefully theyll have a gun range or something. i never shot a gun before but if i can handle a 12 gauge i want it
@bindlestitch1 what grain bullet are you using with your .223? The largest one I can find is a 50. I have the same ranch as you and was wondering if anyone used one for deer instead of just varmints.
Terry, The last I bought was some 62 grain hollow point rounds made by Barnaul Ammunition, made in Russian. The heaviest I could find (at the time) in American ammo was like 59 grain. I shoot heavy grain all time now, the mini 14 seems to group better with the heavier bullet.
@bindlestitch1 Thanks for the info. I will look for some. I really love my mini14. I would love to take it deer hunting but I just didnt feel good about a small grain bullet and such a big animal.
im 12 and the only gun i have is a .22 rifle will that take down a deer of not please reply im going hunting hunting tomorrow

do you think after breeding season that bucks may still hang around the same general area as a scrape?

@fishhuntist
I honestly couldn't say with any expertise. Sorry about that.

@wolfcookieo9 why not a rifle 243, 270, and 300mag ? shotguns are good but i dont particularly like them.
just advice

@mrsvinarich26
He might be in a state that only allows shotguns.
I agree with you btw, if I can use a rifle over a shotgun I will.

alright thanks im thinking about getting a 12 or 20 gauge myself

@wolfcookieo9
Yeah the 12 gauge with slugs would be a great gun for close range.

I use a ruger mini14 ranch rifle. I don't shoot over 40 yards typically.

Happy hunting, my friend.

Iz great tips for beginner deer hunters. I am like you love venison. Going to tag me a couple of fat doe's with my bow here in the U.P.

I was glad to hear that you hunt for the meat, there is a big difference between a hunter and a sportsman.

Thanks, brother. I agree with you. Although when I was younger I went for the rack but I found out that you can't eat those antlers. Heh.
