Did Anne Gastinel study under Rostropovich? Their performances are very similar - the beautiful legato, the harmonic glissandi and even the headbanging! =D
I am glad to hear such a performance in our day. Brava!
Beautiful. The cello player was fantastic, so much concentration. However, more dynamics should be used and a slight less distortion from the cello in a few places.
@idkwhourandidc so just because she doesn't show many emotions in her facial expressions means that she doesn't enjoy playing?? Do you think you could play this piece and focus on doing anything to portray emotion while still playing well? Besides looking at her and seeing her emotions isn't what this is about. that's why I can't watch Yo-Yo Ma, yeah its great that he gets so in the music but sometimes he's just too passionate and it distracts me when I just want to listen to the music.
God, I will never understand how people can say a professional musician like her has no passion. Ever since yo yo ma, people have started equating passion with facial expressions. Here is the passion- studying endlessly for years with no real motive other than to create music. That is passion.
Wow...really did not keep my attention. Love the piece, but no musicality in the playing at all. And no, this is very much like a robot. Shostakovich is supposed to be intense i realize that, but it is also supposed to be musical.
This opus and movement in particular is really special: a vignette of happy Shostakovich (piano) enjoying sex with his mistress (cello) Elena 'Lala' Konstantinovskaya!!
She does not look like she enjoys Shostakovich, or playing cello in general. She needs to loosen up, and learn to lose herself in the music, to truly feel and understand the heart and soul of the piece before playing it.
Anyone who thinks this is "robotic", clearly isn't actually listening to what's going on. Try putting on the video and just listening to the music without watching how she performs.
The cello sounds amazing, I love the melody. The performance is a little bit too impersonal. But I guess that's just the way the cellist enjoys the music, because, obviously, judging from the powerful yet melodic sound of the cello, she IS enjoying her performance. Quit calling her a robot!!
@LifeOfLiterature2 Si! Es un sobrenombre que le inventaron por ahí, me pareció muy cómico, como que le da un toque más bien tierno... Y Shostakovich es todo menos tierno, a mi parecer.
It's no wonder I like the Russian (eastern Euro) composers, they're the heavy metal monsters of their day! My personal fave is Rachmaninov, but this gentleman kicks ass as well!!!
You should listen to Argerich and Mayski performing this(there's a vid in youtube)... Now they KNOW how to perform shostakovich! This one isn't bad too, though
she's amazing but what really makes me want to burst out laughing (in both delight and amazement) is her very good (but very robotical) form when playing. Don't get me wrong, she's brilliant, but it would be nice maybe to see more movement? lol it's like the only emotion she is capable of showing is her face at 1:23 :P
haha she's definitely more of a success than me though. Well done with the harmonics!!!!!! All the best!!! KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
to everyone saying she's robotic...I think you're confusing her facial expressions with her musical expression. Try listening to this with your eyes closed
well, shostakovich does require some lack of emotion similar to the times he was living under the oppression of the russian regime. I feel her lack of emotion is, in some sense an emotion within itself--a cold, mechanical, sense of fear. She embodies these feelings in her playing, I feel.
@meagamon490 : Excuse me, SOVIET regime, not Russian regime ! And yeah, especially that Shostakovich is always having hardship with the premier Stalin.
hahaha i love todays society - even if you're working class you can consume even better music, wine and food from all over the world than the "elite" 300 years ago. It surely feels like pissing the old habsburgers in the face!
Passion, love, a feeling of being free... It's making me high on music! Is it just me who feels like this?
Also, I have to admit, I do the same head-bobbing when I play the piano, swaying along with the melody. It's common. Usually, that means you're feeling the music!!!
@redhotchiliangel i do not agree on the robot part you mentioned....i think it s a matter of character, others seem to be more passionate on their face and others don't but doesn't mean that they don't feel the piece......as it comes to the first two words of your comment(clean, beauty) i totally agree! :)
This is absolutely amazing i lovethis but she is losing alot of hairs on her bow im surprised she made it through the whole song with her bow in tact but yeah im an advanced cello player but im like begginer advanced so yeah i love love love this keep it up
what does Tool have to do with anythng? it is a COMPLETELY different style of music. why dont we just sit back and enjoy the classics along with the greatest classical couple...
The mere thought of comparing formulaic, mass-produced, commercial rock like Tool to the unrivaled genius of Bach makes me laugh. It's so funny, in fact, that I'll forgive you for making such a blasphemous statement.
Shostakovich never fails on delivering loudness, insanity, and genious in his music. But sometimes that's the thing with Shostakovich, its not the same without the loudness.
Like much of Shostakovich's music, this would make a great soundtrack for "Invasion of the Killer Zombies." Picture hundreds of soulless zombies marching into town, their limbs moving spastically with the music, as citizens flee.
its not that she isn't passionate, its that she is lacking some sort or musicality. Its a sonata, and she needs to at least give and take with the pianist a little bit.
