I bet you didn't know on the times you don't get xp, that's doing a trick (or shot for the ranging) twice in a row meaning the audience doesn't like repetitiveness and you get a worse overall score. I have used a similar technique, and I have 84 ranged, yet I always only get clown pieces.

The only received xp thing means what is says. You get a lot of xp for doing these circus things. Unfortunately you cannot continuously receive that exp over and over again.
