DUH!!! Is there anybody who is too dumb not to know how to use sandpaper on rust? Whats going to be your next lesson, maybe you could teach us to dust or possable water the grass.
I inherited an old 1950 plymouth and most of the bodies surface is rusty. Could i use this strategy for it? I'll probably repaint the entire car anyways.
Why can't you just use the thing? They clean themselves in use. That is why a heavily used axe has a polish to it. Steel wool is a bad idea on any chrome because it is much too easy to bite the into chrome thus ruining the mirror finish. Steel wool is used to remove chrome and leave the Nickel plate. Mothers and a clean terry cloth rag is ALL it takes to remove all but the heaviest rust from chrome. I have cleaned up really bad looking chrome on a lot of used Harley parts that came out of sheds.
@japinoy1234 Don't do these things on painted surfaces, but they work great on chrome and bare metals. A surface which is properly painted should NOT rust anyway. I use these processes to clean and polish the chrome on my motorcycles.
@japinoy1234 This works great on chrome - but not painted areas. Don't use emory cloth, either - only 4/0 or finer steel wool. I've been removing rust and other stains from my motorcycles like this for years.
you know men i have a sword my 3rd grandfather made it and it's full of rest and i attend to make it look like new does this work with it and do you recomend for buy any thing would help more in the process of removal
@king911love Just use the WD40 and the finest grade of steel wool - no emery cloth! It will polish it up nicely. If you want a smoother, shinier finish, look into using jeweler's rouge and a buffing wheel.
@king911love Depending on how fragile the object is, this physical removal might be harsh. Instead opt for using citric acid, vinegar or use electrolysis.
@king911love i know its a long time since this topic was written but on a old antic sword i would NOT use this method, ive made knives a long time and restored them and a sword of asian origin is a polished work of art and youd screw it up with this method , and this is easyer too , use calsium remover or vinegar of bout 30 procent soak it bout 3 hours wreapped in cloth or tissue if its not ok do it again and polish with autosol or chalk or non scratc able metal polish, sorry i firs saw this late
i wouldnt do that to a sword...lets just say later down the line if you even tend to sell it you wont get full price for it... it would be worth alot more if you dont try to clean it up like that... (father is a gun dealer / sword)
You can remove rust really easy and safely using Metal Rescue. This method posted with sand paper, WD40, etc. certainly works but it seems like a lot of work and you certainly couldn't use this method with a painted surface or one you're worried about saving like a machine finish. goodle metalrescue or type it in on you tube for lots of info.
(caradetaco67) you have to buy an aircompressor as well though if you use a sand blaster, because a lot of people either dont have one or dont have one powerful enough to power a media blaster
(Guitarnoob99), hey if your removing rust from a ww2 helmet, i would greatly recomment using some sort of chemical rust remover because you want to preserve the paint to keep it orignial. Now if its already been painted its not worth as much so dont worry about preserving that paint. I used evapo rust on my ww1 bayonet. worked great. Goodluck
hi! if I want to to this procedure on my Rambler intake and exhaust manifold, BUT I want to paint it, what do I use to remove the WD-40 to avoid problems with the paint?????
this is a good technique, but i was taught that its a short term fix since the rust will still be in the metal. The best way to stop rust from spreading is to replace the rusted area(cut out and weld on a replacement section), however this isnt always possible on things such as classic cars where parts arent avalible, for severe rust theres 'electyosis'(bad spelling i know) alough that way seems risky if being tried at home
Absolutely. If it's a good blade, then only use fine steel wool and WD-40. Avoid the wire brushing. This will protect the steel and render a nice shine - then you can sharpen it.
Just curias will this work on my truck frame. Theres so much rust on there its not even Funny. I want to get as much of it off before i swap the engine out and possible the transmittion
This technique is for SURFACE rust, the rust (im guessing) in your truck bed is UNDERLYING rust, this rust, needs to be cut out, and a formed piece of metal is to be welded in...it sucks but that is the best way... the cheaper way is to cover it in bondo... a bandaid instead of a stitch kinda thing
awesome!!! tq!!!

WD40 is easy to remove. Use any good degreaser such as denatured alcohol, white vinegar & water (3:1) or acetone.
