@smilie3232 Those are good questions. There will come a time when we're going to have to live without oil, or with a lot less (except for billionaires, of course), so why not work our way off it now? Our desperation is what drives us into the Gulf of Mexico, into tar sands, into fracking - if there were any easy stuff left, we wouldn't be doing any of that. I'd rather we cut back while there are still forests and drinkable water!

@anthonytrip80 Ha! I think the latter will be simultaneous with the former if global oil production actually starts declining year over year. Even the CEO of Total expects that to be by 2015. I'm hoping to spread the word long before that. I think we'll have a much better chance of a productive reaction if people are forewarned - as is, Robert Hirsch says there's an intentional blackout on the topic at the highest levels of government, for fear of panicking the markets. Er, more, I guess.

My city runs almost exclusively on "green energy" (How green burning husks&stuff, 40% of our electricity comes from that, is another discussion) Buses run on natural liquid gas&bio-diesel, we got oodles of that. I bike everywhere because our infrastructure is optimized for it. Guess where I live. (hint: Streetfilms org )

try 30 miles at most this guy has been selling the same concept since 1980, it never took off because it never went more than 30 km on a full tank, that's good for utility vehicles but not as a replacement for your car, that 1000 mile claim is a lie in disguise

US domestic oil production peaked in 1970. Look up any of the stats. (This doesn't mean *all* wells peaked, just that total US production has declined since then.)

Furthermore, it's quite possible to get away from oil very easily. You mention cars earlier -- within one year, you'll see plug-in hybrids on the market: SUVs that get 150mpg and can go for years without buying gas.

And that's just transport. The US can go oil-free in a few years, at a profit.

theres no such thing as oil free, any moving metal part requires lubrication, be it oil or grease, also no oil, no plastic btw I am aware of the stats on US peak in 1970, it's misleading

Lubrication and plastic can be made without the use of conventional oil. Already the former can be done using renewable palm oil, for instance. (There are other problems with palm oil, such as biodiversity, but the point is that you don't need fossil fuels for it.)

And how is the peak "misleading"? US oil production reached its maximum at that point and has been declining ever since. That's the very definition of a peak.

there is a shitload of "oil Shale" in Colorado, Utah, & Wyoming, estimated 800 billion barrels of "recoverable" oil thats 3x what Saudi Arabia has, plus we have the worlds largest coal reserves, coal can be converted to oil I dont know why we dont do it

No one has yet determined a method of recovering shale oil at an energy profit (it takes more energy to extract oil from shale oil than you get out of it). The issue isn't supply, it's deliverability.

As for thinking we don't need oil: You'd be surprised.

Their public denial to recognize the coming peak oil crisis is irresponsible because this behavior encourages wrong decisions like building new airport runways or motorways. Thank you for posting...
