Yes Virginia, there is a santa claus. i just love this commercial plus im learning about her in school and the editor. i just wish i can meet Virginia in person. I still belive in santa claus and i am 12 years old. o well there is nothing wrong in beliving in santa claus. GO VIRGINA!!!
This is one of my favorite commercials. I absolutely agree with the response the editor wrote & I'm almost 20. I love Christmas, the season, the spirit. Everything about it is just wonderful. I will never stop believing. It saddens me that so many people denounce Christmas as purely commercial. Merry Christmas everyone!
@77mcasta I agree with you..even the part about almost being 20 (me too) Christmas has a magical effect on almost everyone and the time of year is just amazing, I have never ONCe even stopped loving the spirit of Christmas and I am excited that it is only a couple months away now!!

The exploitation of childlike faith is evil, whether it is for commercial gain, like with this commercial, or for religious or political indoctrination.
Before telling a child anything you should ask yourself whether if is a belief that adults regret or dispute. Adults never regret being told the multiplication tables or the names of countries and their capitals or animals but they do regret being told lies about monsters, ghosts, gods and mythical beings.
Funny, I've never once regretted believing in Santa Claus; rather, I have some wonderful memories associated with the belief. And if you actually read the article this commercial is based on, it says there is a spirit of Santa Claus, one of giving and love. It is not simply advocating for the figure himself, but rather what he symbolizes.
Note that I did not say all adults regret it. Some adults regret it, and it is impossible to predict if the child you are about to lie to is going to be one of them. I am not suggesting that you don't tell the story, just that you don't lie to a child if they show some scepticism, let them understand the story as a shared myth. Myths are virtually universal, they are only damaging to people when they are taught as if they are literally true in all details, like the Genesis myths.
I love this commercial. It celebrates the very essence of childhood, and is just wonderful. How dreary would our world be with out hope, imagination, and childlike beliefs? The belief in Santa Claus is just wonderful. And I love that Macy's encourages such good thoughts for children. Kudos. Ahh, I love Christmas. And no matter what you say, I know Santa Claus is visiting me (;

I find this commercial really sad, how can 8 million people in the world believe in "santa" if their own families cant afford any gifts for their kids cause they live in a third world country. Also why is a convicted criminal in this video?
"Santa exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished."
I'd like to say that just because you've never seen Santa Clause, that doesn't mean he doesn't exsist. How about belief in God huh? None of you have ever seen him but you insist that he is real. Santa Clause is real to many people just as God is real to many others. Why would anyone want to take that belief away from a Child? This commercial is absolutely amazing. I want to cry just watching it. And if you read the actualy articale, it's sooooooo amzing.
Shut the hell up TiffanyMarie9! You can't compare Santa Claus to God! How can you compare Bible Prohecies to a fat ass bringing toys to the rich? God hating loon!
With what you wrote I would think you pretend to be a follower of Christ and not a true believer.
On Christmas Eve, before the world turns in and you set there for a moment looking at "It's a wonderful life" or listening to the old radio shows...you can feel it. The love, the love from God and the love that the world has for him! The magic in the air...listen and you will hear God-you will feel the power of LOVE!
Wow - What'd you do, leave the Christian Love in your other suit???
According to her profile, TiffanyMarie9 is all of 14 years old. You claim to be 25. It's truly a shame children can't watch a nice Christmas video on YouTube without being attacked by a so-called grownup.
It's not lying if there really is - and that's just a matter of opinion.
Some Americans believe in God and others don't. Anyone who gives a gift on Christmas is santa claus. You know what the post office does with Letters to Santa? They disperse them to a list of people who are willing to fulfill such wishes - meaning everyone is... The Spirit of Christmas. Quit being a DICK.

There is NOT a Santa Clause. Why do we treat children like they are idiots? why not teach them that people like to give, PEOPLE, not magic little elves and reindeer. Their parents love them and buy them gifts. Why do people perpetuate this idea? There ARE children with NO toys. Tell them there is a Santa.
I'm sorry, I know a lot of people don't like this commercial, but I absolutely love it. It makes me tear up whenever I see it. Probably because Santa was my favorite thing about Xmas when I was a kid...
lol wow i thought that i was the only one who teared up to this commercial. my eyes are pretty watery right now as i write this. i just think its so cute and touching, especially if you know the story behind it, but it sounds like some people on here dont and a very cynical about it. oh well! i love this commercial and probably always will :) cheers to you :)

The commercial makes me sick. Why do we condone LYING to our children? Jews must have no "childlike faith". Those poor abused children. We really must speak with their parents.
doesn't it feel a bit incipient to simplify 'hope' with the Santa Clause which can't help point out materialistic consumerism that seem drive these society.
And who are these spokes people that works with Macy's to tell me what hope is?
I get the intentions but poorly exercised for purpose that had intended.
It's actually from an editorial that appeared in "The New York Sun" in 1897. It was a response to a letter written by Virginia OHanlon. She was 8 years old at the time.
So basically the first time I saw this commercial I teared up!!! I just absolutely love the whole Yes Virgina thing, it's like my favorite thing ever!!! It's so cute and like innocent almost!!!
Macy's commercials are the best. I am already shopping on their website due to their campaign commericals. I also love Sears and shopping on their website
Maybe you should ask your child why she wants to be a princess because that is a pretty lame thing to want. Explain they can not be a princess that is worshipped by followers, and that honestly shoud not appeal to them. Talk to them about how they are lucky they have family that can by them gifts and spend time on the holidays, but there is not some magic man from a pagan holiday bringing toys to all the good boys and girls.
