Due to the loose (high stall speed) of th torque converter, the power numbers on a chassis dyno are a bit sad at first glance. It only show's about 260 horsepower to the wheels. Loose converters play games with the dyno computers math. The actual output of the engine is right around 350 naturally aspirated and in the neighborhood of 475 on the bottle. Unfortunately, the engine in the truck at the time this video was made has since expired. New engine on its way though. New videos soon!
The rear suspension is currently just a set of Belltech 3 inch drop leafs with a pair of 3 way adjustable drag shocks. The axle is an 8.8 out of an FX4 Ranger with 4.10 gears and a Detroit Locker. I recently added traction bars after it bent the hell out of the springs in Joliet this past July. It made about 100 passes on nothing more than the springs and shocks. It was dumb not to have at least slapper bars on it. I learned that the hard way from 2 bent springs and a twisted axle tube.
It's getting ladder bars and coil-overs this winter, along with some bracing for the axle. I'd really like to switch to a 9-inch, but money is a little tight. S&W Race Cars make a really nice setup for Rangers that allows everything to fit under the bed. Its very reasonably priced as well and it includes everything. That should help with the 60ft times and keep it a bit more consistent.
If you EVER think about selling this truck I call dibs! Lol. Seriously send me a message on here ha. I would love to have that! Was going to do a 5.0 in my 2000 ranger and just don't have the tools or a place to do such a big project so now its getting supercharged when spring comes around
This perticular truck is not a Lightning Bolt or a clone of one. The Lightning Bolt that was done by Ford Racing had almost the entire drivetrain out of a 2nd Gen. Lightning. The truck you see here started life as a 2.5L 4-cylinder XLT. As you can clearly see, the truck is a long way from that now. It's best run came at Milan Dragway in Milan, Michigan. There, it ran an 11.661 @ 118.68mph with a 1.611 60ft.
I'm the owner of the '01 Ranger in this video and would just like to say that I appreciate everyones interest in the truck. I've posted a few replys that explain a bit about the truck. I'm currently running some Fun Ford envents and also in the NMRA's Detroit Locker Truck and Lightning class, truck number TR11001. I can be found at the FFW in Norwalk, OH July 11-13 and then at the NMRA Columbus event on Labor Day weekend.
If you read the reply to timax525's comment it explains what has been done to the truck. As for what it took to get there, all I can say is a lot of work. I took the truck off the road in 2003 with just 38k on the odometer. From there it took almost 4 years to get to where it is in this video. The truck started as something to drive on the street, but somewhere the line got a little blurred and it turned into the monster it is today. I'm currently running in NMRA Truck and Lightning class.
The engine is an E303 cammed 5.0L crate engine from FRPP. Its backed up by an Art Carr C4 with 3800rpm stalled converter and trans brake. The rearend is an 8.8 with 4.10 gears and a Detroit Locker. The truck has a 10 point cage and runs on 28x10.5 slicks. At the time of this video it was making about 350HP and running mid 12's. I've since added a Zex 125hp wet shot of nitrous and swapped out the 4.10s for 3.73s. Best run to date is an 11.740 @ 114.68mph with a 1.681 60ft.
what headers are you running that is the biggest problem i have with my 01 i have to use explorer headers very constrictive

A. Was this called a Lightning Bolt?
B. Was a purely a concept?
Beautiful truck, I've owned nothing but Ford trucks, F-100's, F-150's, Rangers and now a Sport-Trac.
