Sweet vid.... curious tho - do you now prefer WP over Joomla? I started using PHP/MySQL-based websites and landed on WP because of the passionate WP community behind the scenes. Joomla... not so much. My clients wouldn't know the difference, but when I have to build it and then show THEM how to use the site - I know they would be lost in Joomla. WP is just easier.
By the way, you're awesome and in a past life I think we were married. ... just sayin'. - @redtechmedia
@RedTechMedia Yes, I do prefer WordPress over Joomla and that came about later the same year I made this video. Google me plus "Wordpress" and you'll see I've spoken at several Wordcamps and attended just as many. I also do training on it (next live training in September!). Oh, well hello there past husband from another life ^_^
Is there a video that shows how to add pages, buttons, menus, embed videos, etc. using Joomla? I think that would prove to be more useful than just showing what Joomla is capable of. I'm currently experimenting with Joomla and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the links upon links that Joomla requests when you look to add a page or poll. An explanation of what is what would be great!
@kaocsaephan There is a video I posted on how to install Joomla from scratch here on YouTube. The one that shows how to use it is on my training website and costs $29.
Respond to this video... I made this video in 2008 to show a client how powerful Joomla was because they were still editing web pages by hand and it took them days to make updates. I know now we all roll our eyes and say, "Oh! Of course you should use Joomla" but four years ago, it was a hard sell ^_^
@kd0afk OMG! That is hilarious! I'm Jewish and Black so I'm going to address this comment. I actually said, "JoomArt" but "Jew Mart" could have some mobility in the Joomla world.
@adriarichards Yo bro, i want to make a website for a small business. Joomla Does it give you a domain? or do you need to add joomla in the end? Does joomla give you features to edit you're business name to make it look professional..? I need some tips since, im new at this. You're reply will be well appreciated.
@Jestterx for Joomla you need to already have purchased your own domain name and have it hosted already, once you do that your then going to upload joomla to your hosting server. Joomla is a great source for beginners and professionals alike so yeah youll be able to make a nice looking site
I'm going to make a website and I just gotta say that my host is awsome. It has joomla, drupal and more. :P Different blogs, forums and all stuff you can except :P It's too easy with that package :D
I'm wanting to create a support group website and also add a really good recipe section. What do you or anyone else suggest to use? Joomla, Wordpress, Dreamweaver? I can create websites, but I don't know coding. I have always gotten by though. Thanks in advance
Joomla is awesome. But i'd recommend a local install on XAMP or WAMP plus a good book to learn it's slightly convoluted methods of doing cms before going live. It's much easier that ftp bashing on a live site. Thumbs up for Joomla 1.5
I suggest the best place to start is at the Joomla website. Any book you purchase on website development, CMS's or even social media will be outdated by the time of publishing.
There is a TON of great info on the Joomla website. I would also encourage you to attend a local meetup with other people who like Joomla.
Best way to brush up.
I offer training as well but no Joomla until April 2010 :(
I wish I was at home to give the book titles. I have two books. The main thing you want to look for if you are in a book store is does it show you how to write modules for joomla. I have written a few for work. If you reply to this I will get a notice and can reply when I'm at home.
Neat to make your own look..not have a cookie cutter like most out there. Helpful, workable, not cluttered is way way better than pretty and puffy and stuffy.
This is software you download but install into your website hosting account. You need a domain name, hosting space, a few web tools like FTP client and text editor and then you're ready to go.
There are installation instructions on Joomla's site. Sorry, I can't insert links here.
Yes, building a site from scratch takes skills. A CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, combined with a great theme/template can have you up and running quickly.
You would copy all the files out of the root web folder on your computer up to your site through FTP (Filezilla). You would then export the MySQL database and import that through Cpanel or phpMyAdmin.
I will be holding a workshop on doing this so check the video for the link. Otherwise, send me a message through YouTube and I'll find a video link online explaining how to get this done.
I made a site with joomla on my localhost, I want to get the site in the air but can you tell me what files I should upload in a free host? or isn't this possible?
Sure, to some extent you can. The code that drives Joomla as well as the web platform are still open source.
It's unfortunate but some website design companies and marketing folks attempt to pass off Joomla as something they built. They may strip out components in an attempt to rebrand it.
I'm completely honest with my clients about the website platforms I use and explain the benefits of open source; especially that Joomla can be supported by more than one person.
Can Joomla support social networking? For example, the ability of customers to upload articles on a topic? the ability for others to meta tag and rate the article?
Joomla can pull popular social networking because most big sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIN and Myspace offer API's (allow applications to exchange info).
I haven't setup Joomla as self contained social networking site but if you're looking for something like that, check out Ning.
Tagging is usually done by the poster/author.
There are many modules and components for ratins.
Too big a topic for comments. Contact me offline if you still have questions.
Yes it can but the bulk of the functionality will come via the installation of multiple extentions. A lot of these extentions will themselves have 'extention specific' add-ons to increase their usability. For instance you could install a blogging extention and then a seperate add on to comment/rate individual blogs.
For more robust 'social networking' the first thing you'd install would be community builder. It alone has dozens of add-ons itself.
it's Not flexible at all. It's based on boxes here and boxes there. If you're not able to make you're own template, you're stuck on the creativity of other people. I have NO idea why people THINK that Joomla is great. And god, they ALL look alike.
I hear you. Regular websites are often built from templates as well so they're the same beast in that respect. Graphic designers work from a template outline when they create websites. Dreamweaver and Contribute utilize "wireframes" of CSS and html (the bones) streched over colors (the fur), the same as Joomla.
Joomla is amazing. Through modules, components, plugins and mambots visitors can join your site, register for events, interact, rate articles and more.
As with every way of building a site, there are advantages and disadvantages.
What I'd like to do now is how to learn to make my own Joomla templates, to have some more freedom in how a site I build, looks.
Mind you, there are virtually MILLIONS absolutely wonderful FREE templates out there... but still...in spite of being just a hobbyist, I don't want to be dependant on templates made by others. So there, I want to free myself from becoming a "template slave" (heehee).
Its not just a template..you can make your website look like anything..any design what ever you want. If you need help with the design you can get a developer for cheap..like $6 an hour..I use them all the time.

I started off hand coding in Notepad in 1999 so I hear you.
Yes, content management systems (CMS) like Joomla are easy to use and much faster to update than hand coding.
I am actually recommending that people try Wordpress instead of Joomla for a new website.
Both have showcases on their sites, check them out to find out what's best for your needs.
adriarichards 2 years ago
Many people don't understand what Content Managment Systems are even if they are are experienced website designers.
This video helps people understand how Joomla can save them time and look beautiful.
If you want customization training, I'll be offering that this fall on my website.

Installing templates means you upload a zipped file and Joomla does the rest. It's built into Joomla just like many other Content Management Systems.
