  • the best album of Uli, for me the best album of all times. Lyrics are awesome - especially touching, when You listen all that songs, one after another. A complete mystic vision of the End of Time. Epic! Poetic! In tree languages! You can say you don't like it, but I wouldn't dare to say it's simply "bad". Ofcourse it's my personal opinion :)

  • Mr Uli is....awesome!

  • that rift at 0.47 is mind blowing

  • classic song

  • Lyrics are a little lame. But hey, the are delivered awesomely by the amazing Mark boals. And come on it's Uli Jon Roth!

  • I think this album is a Masterpiece, and will be recognized as a Monumentally Great Work in the end.

  • Maybe so, right now even any guitar magazines haven't even noticed the album, which is a disgrace IMO.

  • Uli always goes His own way, without regard for the path expected of Him. This is what makes Him truly Great. Whether commercially recognized or not. It has been the heart-rending Truth that many artistes of the highest (Ex)calibre are never recognized in their own lifetimes. But we''ll remember Him!

  • you said everything! so true, man...

  • Dreadful lyrics a 5 year old could write better! Uli is great guitarist this album not his best. Very pretentious and the track Uli sings on pleaseeeeeeee! Uli's playing was at its peak on 'Beyond The Astral Skies', these days very one dimensional 'singing electric saw' Sky guitar sound, it's starting to get bit tired with little variation. The final track pretentious tedious twaddle that goes on for ages, drivel like 'Techno Man' with lyrics to match.

  • I have to agree with you that at least his composing of both songs and guitar solo parts was at it's peak on "Beyond..." with songs like "Why" and "I'll be there". I also liked Metamorphosis, but this new album is boring, no real great ideas to be impressed with. Guitars are great every now and then, but not as dominant as I would hope.

  • YTTuco,

I think too with the Sky II guitar his guitar sound changed drastically! Astral Skies some was done on Strat., but most on Sky I & sound was far richer and better tone. On subsequent albums it's a very bare sound with minimal effects, that starts to sound very one dimensional & bland after a while. What a pity he did not do more albums soon after Astral!!! He ran into debts from tours, etc.

  • Uli's best solo is IMO on Still so many lives away. The way it is structured, how it swings up and down, and grows until the end. Beautiful. The era of Electric Sun is his best by far. Have you seen the videos from his US tour in 1985 on Youtube uploaded by AXEFLYER, that sound I love (even if the recording obviously could be better)?

  • I have to disagree. I guess you're more of a rocker style, that might be the reason why you don't like his post-electric sun work.

For me, i consider Sky Of Avalon one of his best albums, just AMAZING (pegasus track). TSG and metamorphosis are my second best. Anyway, i agree UADS isn't his best album, but it's good, anyway.. more of a rock-approach (wah-wah n stuff).

Btw, i find awesome the sky guitar sound, much better than the strat (first time i've seen a guitar blend with a violin so well).

  • I do listen to the tracks 4-7 (starting with this one), but tracks 1-3 and beyond 8 are not for me. However, my first post above looks a bit too negative, I see it now. And yes, I think you're right: I like the rock stuff (Scorps & Electric Sun) best. I don't know, somethings just missing - I might want a little more "commercial", if you like, songs with some catchiness and groove, rhythm.

  • Why does it have to be violin-like? It's a guitar still. I understand that Uli wants it that way, but I like his tone and articulation, not the fact that his guitar has seven strings and 32 frets and it reaches these high notes.

  • Well the "7-string 32 frets" part is solely for range. You know, you have a LOT more options when you have a LOT more octaves. He did NOT design the sky guitar because of violin... not at all.

The thing is... sky guitar tone is so fucking great, that it can blend in an orchestra as another instrument of it, you know?

The other guitars usually have such a sharp sound (sorry, i couldn't find a better word to describe it) that if you are going to notice, it's really not that much of a good sound.

  • Sharp sound is good description, and I agree. It's the fatter, softer tone I like. I think for example on the track 6 'Letter of the law' there is a sequence where Uli plays great solo part while singing goes on and in that part the sound goes a bit messy when he goes for the highest notes to play fast. I'm sorry for my poor description, english is my third language and I am no musician.

  • i don't understand exactly which part you're talkin about. but i have never noticed any problem with the higher notes until today... listening to metamorphosis it seems that sky guitar is good at any range... but if you could write the exact time in the song, in which you listened to the messy part which you talked about i could pay more attention to it.

  • 2.03-2.19 he plays great, I really like the melody he plays, but the sound is 'stingy' and somewhat thin, and it almost hurts ears when played louder. Messy is too strong a word, but the articulation is not that clear there.

  • Nuh uh

  • @CloudsBeyond Not at all. Lyrics are bad yes, but come on this album is awesome.

  • I love uli playing hes great ,but the lyrics are horrible

  • agreed, and it's the same throughout the new album... i kind of wish Uli sang himself..

  • uli is the coolest
