The ac that failed the anual was fliped on its back after a roll out that ended up in a soft part of the runway, but all four spars were replaced with new during the rebuild prior to finding the cracks. The part that makes me nervous is that this ac was never used for aerobatics. The GCBC was six years old with only about five hundred hours on it and saw extensive aerobatic use.
This one has the Rainbow wood spars which are 1/8 inch thicker and have the longer doubler plate. Frankly, I prefer wood... if the aircraft is taken care of properly, you won't have a problem with it.
Yes... I have had to replace my spars. Once, an improperly aligned inspection ring chafed the bottom of one (the guy had installed it straddling the spar), and onother time I had a broken rib behind the fuel tank which 'marked the spar'.
I understand what you are saying. Yes they are designed for aerobatics but there have been numerous cases of cracked wing spars, broken seat mounts and crushed leading edges. This leading to a new wing designed by American Champion. A frind of mine Citabria failed an anual three years ago because on cracks. I knew two guys 15 years ago in a near new GCBC that had a wing break just outside the strut attachment point on the wing." Broken Spar" . I do love the AC though.
The cracks only seem to appear in aircraft with prior wing damage. This one has wooden spars. I use the Rainbow spars which are 1/32 inch thicker with a much longer doubler.
Although the extra 100lb grosse with the AC spars would be nice, I won't get them simply for the fact that in my opinion the AD was far overblown and not necessary.
i wold li9ke fly in airplane

Hope this one has metal spars! Sucks when a wing breaks.

It's a Citabria. Citabria backwards is Airbatic. All these are designed for aerobatics.

Great flying. It takes a lot of talent to fly so well on low horsepower. Does the aircraft have an inverted system? thanks
