Actually, some mods can do things like this. Check out the GLSL mod- I'm pretty sure that you can find a shader which provides an effect a bit like this.

This mod now has a lot more features, including spruce-type grove sprites, a more merciful killing penatly, more reasonable block spawning rates, and the ability to heal and make all three varieties follow you at once with grass seeds. But it's not getting released QUITE YET!

It's going to be part of the Quintessential Creatures mod pack on the MC forums, which is getting a major rehaul very soon. It's gonna have updated turtles, foxes, and much more. So make sure to check that out.
