There is no doubt type r is a better track day car. But I like the fact that with the ST you don't have to wait for 6.5 you just get a surge . Plus the ST is far more refined. At the end of the day, i'm a shit driver, who knows very little about putting a car through its paces but when I go for a blast on the weekends without the kids I would prefer the Type r. With the ST it doesn't feel so naughty, plus I cat keep up with the Elise's on the mountain roads, with the civic its no problem.

I know it's all personal taste, but for me, as the everyday car, the FST feels A LOT quicker than the CTR - the obvious low down torque advantage makes the car fun to drive without having to rev the nuts off it to really get a move on.

Now with 2.7L V6 i enjoy driving and better fuel economy - shift at 2.8k and still pull away from traffic.....there is no replacement for displacement....
@alexarthur1984, you don't have a scooby mate!!! My friend owns an ST, we've had a race and he lost no problem. He drives hard too so I don't wana hear the whole 'he's obviously a s**t driver etc'. The 172 cup IS a quick car....never raced one though. Chances are if it's standard I'd have a good chance against it. The power to weight ratio is the only factor that would lead me to believe it would stand a chance. It's called a 'Cup' purely for this reason - it's such a light car.
This ST is standard. I have a civic type r and I RAPE the ST any day of the week. My cars running 230bhp, no turbo, no supercharger, just improved air flow and any ST owners wana come and claim there ST is faster I demand a race!!!!!! The ST is too heavy and big to play with me lol
@JMEthesituation lol you sure you weren't racing a kitted 1.6 lx haha,i've had both and the st is faster.even my old clio 172 cup was faster than the type r.

Ctr's are slow these days, which is a shame, it appears N/A cars are dying out :(
I have driven both cars and like them both, I thought the Honda did pretty well considering the Focus has an extra cylinder (5), an extra 4 valves(20), and a turbo charger. Both nice anyway and very different cars.

this either tells us the focus is more efficient and will use less fuel at top speed or... its not quite geared correctly and this engine could have been even faster.
or im just completely wrong and theres a limiter on the top speed, anybody know?
Oh and second of all the only focus that has a turbo is the rs. The st is all motor and it's a 2.3 not 2.5. The 2.5 is in the rs. I know this shit cause I do drive a focus and I plan on buying a rs but if I can't find one for sale in the US I will go for the ST.
Honda doesn't weight nearly as much as ST, and ST has bigger space for passengers, and better handling over that ricer crap. Ford handles better and nature of engine is better as it has lots of torq in low revs, when comparing to honda crap which needs rpund 6000-8000 RPMs to run good. Its only good for track.
@ploscar337 The V-tec engine is one the best engines in the world and is pure N/A where as the Focus ST relises on a turbo just to make it move lol Civic's are way better looking and the interior is far better and more comfy to drive, The focus is more like a family car where as the Civic is more exciting to drive and is alot of fun and sounds better when in high end revs, just face it "Japanese" Honda Technology is far superior than Fords Technology..
@ploscar337 I would more tell that focus is now more technology than Honda, what is turbo? isnt ford more ''muscle car'', why then relying on turbo now?
me having a focus st every time a come up against a type r is always a good race. there both really nice cars to drive but being a ford man. it will always be the st.
both really evenly matched and great fun cars! the ep3 is much better than the new civic, I prefer the looks of the focus as i'm not a jap fan and own a fiesta ST, plus the alarm on the ep3 is far from good, as stated elsewhere on the comments an RS would beat them both, old shape or new. especially on the track. great vid
yeah but what honda does in 1....ford does it in 2....honda in 3...ford in 4....so....and this is honda type R for japanes market and develops 227 bhp!!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I figure I'll stop wasting my time, and compared to an sti, yes (these cars a crap), the only fwd to come close is a focus rs and a renault :D (they should test the acura too though)... and honda made the nsx, that doesn't mean a civic is one (you're integra comment)
Both are great drivers cars and they look very evenly matched in terms of performance. Would probably go for the Honda; cheaper insurance and not as juicy. Plus the VTEC sounds great when revved. Now if I had the choice of an RS too, then then RS would win hands down! :-0
I've had the ep3 too. here in Switzerland it was just brilliant to drive over mountains and to enjoy all the corners.. that is what ctr is built for..not for a stupid speed run..
@dominoc5, the ctr a fun car but it's not BUILT for corners, there is a reason why people don't buy them and put them on tracks (with turns, we know y'all drag race) nor in rallies, they can't corner well, though I admit the last two type r's have improved, but they haven't reached the, acura rsx's or focus st's level as yet, and don't even compare that to a focus rs (and this is just fwd we're talking about)
it is a great car for corners. I didn't compared it to the st..sorry.. I just see no sense in a speed run.. compare them over some mountains..alot more fun and more interesting than a japanes highrev on highways..
I highly agree with you on the speedruns (I love rallying), and actually I could say the Mugen Civic is good in corners though, I can't lie, that is a good car.
@tall757 look I know focus st is great car, especially the new focus rs :)
I just compared my s3 8l modell chipped 258PS, 380NM and my original CTR EP3.. and hell the ep3 was faster over the mountains..if the street was dry..
if the street was wet.. the ep3 was about as fast as a family car ^^
All I wanna say is, that the CTR is handling very brilliant in corners.. just drive one..and you know it..Speedrun is for pussies. They've should compare it the cars with corners.
@tall757 What are you talking about? "there is a reason why people don't buy them and put them on tracks nor in rallies" ?? Are you just going to ignore all the people who use them on tracks or rallys to make that argument then? Such as the 3 Civic teams in the BTCC? Or in the many CTR rallying videos on Youtube?
?... which part of World Rally Championship do you see a civic except for the "awd" "eg" mx which flipped and rolled over people (deaths), and if you watch the onboard videos with civics you notice that they QUITE slow...and in btcc they haven't won shit.. in fact, a civic has never won any legitimate MAJOR 1st place title in motorsport except for drag racing ((just engine money) and you can look it up before you thumb me down,,, I ain't no fanboy, I like facts :)
How can you say you just like facts when you claim that people don't buy Civics for rallying (when obviously they do) and then try to back that up by saying they look "quite slow" in videos?! That's purely your opinion. Whether they're successful or not is irrelevant, you stated that people don't use them for racing and rallying. And that was wrong.
1 more thing with regards to your "not built for corners" remark- this from Auto Express UKs Type R review: "few cars change direction as eagerly and quickly as the Type R" "the Type R beats the WRX hands-down for handling." "it really excels on A and B-roads, thanks to the superbly responsive steering and communicative chassis." "the Type R is sublime, with great traction, balance and precision." " stable and reassuring even when going through the Anglesey circuits fastest bends." DOH!
wow, ur a brand loving guy, they still haven't won shit and they're not in wrc at all, and they are "quite slow" compared to the others on anything, even tarmac... check top gear power laps or nurbugring production car lap times buddy, don't read shit magazines :), where the hell is anglesey circuit, and why hasn't honda won anything but drag (most money in engine and driver reaction time)... I told you, numbers and facts, not stupid opinions trash mags (do you want soysauce with that rice? lol)
Oh dear. It's got nothing to do with being a "brand loving guy" I bought a CTR because I did my research first and time and again the motoring press (including Auto Express, one of the most respected UK magazines & Top Gear!) praised it above all others. You say that Type R hasn't reached the Acura RSX's handling level? It seems pretty clear you don't even realise that Acura RSX is a rebadged Honda Integra DC5! And you think you know 'facts'? LOL Like i said, your OPINIONS aren't facts!
@staggabob in your area, do you have the FD2 Type R? its currently the good handling, 225hp CTR. Laps Suzuka faster than a DC5R by 3 seconds =) dunno why there are so many civic haters and so quick to calling vtecs 'ricers'
Hey, why'd you remove your comment? I'll reply anyway. I don't recall saying the Focus ST was in any way poor. My point (if you look waaay back up the forum) was that when you said the CTR didn't do corners you were and still are wrong. TG Power Laps? The CTR EP3 is quicker (1:32.8) than Leon Cupra R, Astra VXR, Mk4 R32, Mk V GTi, Clio 182, Megane 225, Cooper S Works, 147 GTA. By your logic that must mean all those cars must be slow with crap handling, right? Do you even drive BTW?
You've missed out the fact that the old focus rs was faster round the top gear track than the ep3 type r. Out of that bunch of hot hatches the clio is the best handling then the mk1 focus rs (on track)then the type r. The honda eg/ek/dc2 chassis are better handling wise than the ep3 chassis which tbh is not that great. The new civic type r is outclassed by most of its new rivals.
Well there's a lot of cars faster than the EP3! The old RS is apparently brilliant on track but got slated in reviews for it's on road manners. I'm not saying the CTR is the best car ever, that whole rant was just to point out the guy was wrong when he said they don't corner well. Search "Fifth Gear. Civic Type R x Focus" The RS is quickest (slightly) but the handling of the CTR is apparently more fun. I haven't driven an RS myself so have to take his word for it. Also CTR was £4k cheaper!
Its so close its not worth arguing about both are the best out of that bunch 2002-2005 hot hatches both are equaly as tunable both hold there value well. The 2006- type r just isnt as good as the ep3. The ep3 still holds it own against the newer gen hot hatches i think and handles better than all of them (except the renault megan r26r)
I have a type-r EP3 & love it to bits when it goe's to 7000 RPM or more it loves it. it goe's crazy i love it. I can't judge the ST as my last car was a standard 2.0 Xetec Focus. The gear change is not as smooth as the type-r but the ride is alot more comfy on long journeys i started to get arse ache after 100 miles on th motorway. But honda engines are built to last. Another plus the type-r is cheaper & dosn't rely on a turbo hense the higher revs. If the turbo goe's it's fucking expensive.
Ive had an EP3 and it was great but i got bored with it, ive beat focus ST;s but overall its pretty eveb between the 2 cars. Id choose the Civiv everytime but thats just mt prefference. Your vtec is engaging to late, it should be kickin g in at 5800 rpm and not 7000 rpm.
With a good remap , suspension , oz rims and some pzero's you can have loads of fun on the tracks , shows etc...a pure tunercar for fordlovers or engine-freaks .
No discussion , type r etc hold there own territorium ..i like them all actually i just prefer the ST.
They get good Fuel economy and some decent power. Plus, there are many available upgrades to choose from on the market. I didn't thumbs down your comment, I'm just informing you that your sources were incorrect. ;)
@sleepisyummy honda does not make a b20 vtec. people like to put a vtec head from the GSR or B16 onto it, and that makes it a vtec, but honda didn't make a b20 vtec. they do make a k20 tho which is vtec.
The advantage of EP3 Civic is astonishing.Ford is TURBO 2.5 liter R-5 engine with 225 HP. honda got atmosphere R-4 2.0 liter and the output is practically the same. Got any questions about technical advatage of one of these cars? Must be sick stupid to say Ford is good while in fact is miserable
The focus is full of toys and comforts and is very heavy designed to be nice to drive on long journeys, the civic is not, where it is a great car to drive it is not for long journeys, it has a harsh ride. I'd take the ST just for the comfort and performance.

Sorry guys but the Ford looks pants compared to the Honda. Fair play it's (just) quicker but see what happens when you put force induction on the Honda, bye bye Ford, in fact bye bye most things :)
lol yeah if you mod the honda it will say goodbye to the ST, but mod the ST and the tables will simply flip back the other way lmao! remap, intercooler, induction and exhaust for just over 1k and the focus will have about an extra 55bhp at least byeee!!
Fair play but you get over 300hp from the supercharger kit and it's a Honda, it'll never break. Ford had to look to Volvo for their engine. Anyway Focus's look boring like the new Golf.
Sorry mate but the mark 2 Focus is about as unoriginal as the mark one was original and as for mark 2 facelift? Yuck! You're obviously very uninspired my friend, lol. At least Honda dare to be different (new Civic) and dont cheat with forced induction.
Well your right there! I know nothing about cars, as long as it looks good i don't worry about unoriginality! I also don't know what forced induction is. If i learned a thing or two about cars then i may understand but as of now i would love to have a focus ST and am currently saving!
I own a Fiat Uno Turbo i.e. with a T28 Turbo from a 200SX, I know how thrilling Turbo cars are!! Im just pointing out the fact that the Honda (UKDM) gets 197bhp from normal aspiration. Ford went to Volvo for their engine too. Even the RS Focus uses the engine from the Volvo S60 R.
2.0 n/a vs 2.5 turbo the st is a sad try to make something that can never have the name of a type-r ,honda type-r is the best hatchback ever and it live above his name
i,ve drove both? and the type r felt faster than st but the st was very smooth and felt alot heavier. not as fast as it should be for a 2.5 five pot turbo. my point is if you have a family get the st if not get the type r.
There is no doubt type r is a better track day car. But I like the fact that with the ST you don't have to wait for 6.5 you just get a surge . Plus the ST is far more refined. Well I currently have a ep3 2005 which I'm selling, as have just got a company car so going to consolidate the Mrs car and the Type R.
The Mrs wants a ST so will be looking at getting one in the next week or so.
I love the civic (when its dry) so much fun and very sticky. However when it rains, its very difficult to drive quickly (well with my limited skill).
I will be getting the 260 mountune upgrade asap also. I will report back my findings. If I can be arsed.

this either tells us the focus is more efficient and will use less fuel at top speed or... its not quite geared correctly and this engine could have been even faster.
or im just completely wrong and theres a limiter on the top speed, anybody know?
jinx20001 1 year ago

Its only good for track.

ploscar337 1 year ago
@ploscar337 The V-tec engine is one the best engines in the world and is pure N/A where as the Focus ST relises on a turbo just to make it move lol Civic's are way better looking and the interior is far better and more comfy to drive, The focus is more like a family car where as the Civic is more exciting to drive and is alot of fun and sounds better when in high end revs, just face it "Japanese" Honda Technology is far superior than Fords Technology..

both really evenly matched and great fun cars! the ep3 is much better than the new civic, I prefer the looks of the focus as i'm not a jap fan and own a fiesta ST, plus the alarm on the ep3 is far from good, as stated elsewhere on the comments an RS would beat them both, old shape or new. especially on the track. great vid

Taco at 160 km/h, ST 148 km/h, Type R 144 km/h
Taco at 200 km/h, ST 195 km/h, Type R 190 km/h
ST reaches 240 km/h with 5:23:55

I figure I'll stop wasting my time, and compared to an sti, yes (these cars a crap), the only fwd to come close is a focus rs and a renault :D (they should test the acura too though)... and honda made the nsx, that doesn't mean a civic is one (you're integra comment)
tall757 2 years ago
Both are great drivers cars and they look very evenly matched in terms of performance. Would probably go for the Honda; cheaper insurance and not as juicy. Plus the VTEC sounds great when revved. Now if I had the choice of an RS too, then then RS would win hands down! :-0

I've had the ep3 too. here in Switzerland it was just brilliant to drive over mountains and to enjoy all the corners.. that is what ctr is built for..not for a stupid speed run..
in japan 180kph.. hf..
dominoc5 2 years ago
@dominoc5, the ctr a fun car but it's not BUILT for corners, there is a reason why people don't buy them and put them on tracks (with turns, we know y'all drag race) nor in rallies, they can't corner well, though I admit the last two type r's have improved, but they haven't reached the, acura rsx's or focus st's level as yet, and don't even compare that to a focus rs (and this is just fwd we're talking about)
tall757 2 years ago
it is a great car for corners. I didn't compared it to the st..sorry.. I just see no sense in a speed run.. compare them over some mountains..alot more fun and more interesting than a japanes highrev on highways..
dominoc5 2 years ago
I highly agree with you on the speedruns (I love rallying), and actually I could say the Mugen Civic is good in corners though, I can't lie, that is a good car.
tall757 2 years ago
@tall757 look I know focus st is great car, especially the new focus rs :)
I just compared my s3 8l modell chipped 258PS, 380NM and my original CTR EP3.. and hell the ep3 was faster over the mountains..if the street was dry..
if the street was wet.. the ep3 was about as fast as a family car ^^
All I wanna say is, that the CTR is handling very brilliant in corners.. just drive one..and you know it..Speedrun is for pussies. They've should compare it the cars with corners.
dominoc5 2 years ago 3
@tall757 What are you talking about? "there is a reason why people don't buy them and put them on tracks nor in rallies" ?? Are you just going to ignore all the people who use them on tracks or rallys to make that argument then? Such as the 3 Civic teams in the BTCC? Or in the many CTR rallying videos on Youtube?
staggabob 2 years ago
?... which part of World Rally Championship do you see a civic except for the "awd" "eg" mx which flipped and rolled over people (deaths), and if you watch the onboard videos with civics you notice that they QUITE slow...and in btcc they haven't won shit.. in fact, a civic has never won any legitimate MAJOR 1st place title in motorsport except for drag racing ((just engine money) and you can look it up before you thumb me down,,, I ain't no fanboy, I like facts :)
tall757 2 years ago
How can you say you just like facts when you claim that people don't buy Civics for rallying (when obviously they do) and then try to back that up by saying they look "quite slow" in videos?! That's purely your opinion. Whether they're successful or not is irrelevant, you stated that people don't use them for racing and rallying. And that was wrong.
staggabob 2 years ago
1 more thing with regards to your "not built for corners" remark- this from Auto Express UKs Type R review: "few cars change direction as eagerly and quickly as the Type R" "the Type R beats the WRX hands-down for handling." "it really excels on A and B-roads, thanks to the superbly responsive steering and communicative chassis." "the Type R is sublime, with great traction, balance and precision." " stable and reassuring even when going through the Anglesey circuits fastest bends." DOH!
staggabob 2 years ago
wow, ur a brand loving guy, they still haven't won shit and they're not in wrc at all, and they are "quite slow" compared to the others on anything, even tarmac... check top gear power laps or nurbugring production car lap times buddy, don't read shit magazines :), where the hell is anglesey circuit, and why hasn't honda won anything but drag (most money in engine and driver reaction time)... I told you, numbers and facts, not stupid opinions trash mags (do you want soysauce with that rice? lol)
tall757 2 years ago

Laps Suzuka faster than a DC5R by 3 seconds =) dunno why there are so many civic haters and so quick to calling vtecs 'ricers'
violancers 1 year ago
Hey, why'd you remove your comment? I'll reply anyway. I don't recall saying the Focus ST was in any way poor. My point (if you look waaay back up the forum) was that when you said the CTR didn't do corners you were and still are wrong. TG Power Laps? The CTR EP3 is quicker (1:32.8) than Leon Cupra R, Astra VXR, Mk4 R32, Mk V GTi, Clio 182, Megane 225, Cooper S Works, 147 GTA. By your logic that must mean all those cars must be slow with crap handling, right? Do you even drive BTW?
staggabob 2 years ago 3
You've missed out the fact that the old focus rs was faster round the top gear track than the ep3 type r. Out of that bunch of hot hatches the clio is the best handling then the mk1 focus rs (on track)then the type r. The honda eg/ek/dc2 chassis are better handling wise than the ep3 chassis which tbh is not that great. The new civic type r is outclassed by most of its new rivals.
Eastwoodzs 2 years ago
Well there's a lot of cars faster than the EP3! The old RS is apparently brilliant on track but got slated in reviews for it's on road manners. I'm not saying the CTR is the best car ever, that whole rant was just to point out the guy was wrong when he said they don't corner well. Search "Fifth Gear. Civic Type R x Focus" The RS is quickest (slightly) but the handling of the CTR is apparently more fun. I haven't driven an RS myself so have to take his word for it. Also CTR was £4k cheaper!
staggabob 2 years ago
Its so close its not worth arguing about both are the best out of that bunch 2002-2005 hot hatches both are equaly as tunable both hold there value well. The 2006- type r just isnt as good as the ep3. The ep3 still holds it own against the newer gen hot hatches i think and handles better than all of them (except the renault megan r26r)
Eastwoodzs 1 year ago
I have a type-r EP3 & love it to bits when it goe's to 7000 RPM or more it loves it. it goe's crazy i love it. I can't judge the ST as my last car was a standard 2.0 Xetec Focus. The gear change is not as smooth as the type-r but the ride is alot more comfy on long journeys i started to get arse ache after 100 miles on th motorway. But honda engines are built to last. Another plus the type-r is cheaper & dosn't rely on a turbo hense the higher revs. If the turbo goe's it's fucking expensive.

Sorry guys but the Ford looks pants compared to the Honda. Fair play it's (just) quicker but see what happens when you put force induction on the Honda, bye bye Ford, in fact bye bye most things :)
kiereemon 2 years ago
lol yeah if you mod the honda it will say goodbye to the ST, but mod the ST and the tables will simply flip back the other way lmao! remap, intercooler, induction and exhaust for just over 1k and the focus will have about an extra 55bhp at least byeee!!
moleextra1 2 years ago 3
Fair play but you get over 300hp from the supercharger kit and it's a Honda, it'll never break. Ford had to look to Volvo for their engine. Anyway Focus's look boring like the new Golf.
