I wonder that if when mercury vapor is ionized it produces ultraviolet light, has something to do with the fact that its shadow is only cast under ultraviolet light... interesting video anyway. 4/5*'s.
I have a pound of mercury in my garage, and when I opened the bottle one time, I saw a gray haze come out of it like at 0:23. I held my breath and put it back on the shelf lol.
This vid has a propaganda like tone it. True you shouldn't play with it every day and spread it in nature but no need to overreact if exposed to a small amount.
Also it's not 100% true that Hg is the only liquid metal at room temperature. Numerous alloys are too of which Galinstan is the most famous and for all practical uses non toxic. It melts at -19 C (-2.2 F)
If you're nervous breaking your Hg thermometer but like the way it works. Get a Galinstan one instead - works and feels like a Hg.
A teaspoon takes 20 yrs to evaporate? Not even, the dentist would dip a dime in an amalgam's worth for us kids to rub for fun - gone in 2-3 days, a teaspoon would do the same if spilled, and likely kill anyone who stayed in a closed room with it - about 95% absorption via vapor. And if you're not dead, you'll suffer, guaranteed.
Should add that an amalgam's worth if inhaled is enough to kill a kid. The stuff does leak from amalgams and will severely screw you and your children up, but no MD will diagnose it, that and amalgams, biggest medical fraud in history.
Mercury is amazing. Read the book "Real Alchemy" to see what you can do with mercury. You'll be able to quit your day job and live in paradise! lol...seriosly though!
Which is why they don't let students play with it in schools any more because we now know more about the hazards with mercury. However, mercurys doesn't oxidize instantly. It is a metal after all, even more dense than iron! And look at how long it takes iron to oxidize! Iron alone in the air takes years to oxidize (water speeds up process due to higher oxygen content) And mercury, seeing how it is far more dense than iron, would take even longerrrr to oxidize. It's a very misunderstood element:)
And don't forget what it does to a baby when injected with mercury containing vaccines. Autism has been linked to Mercury. Our government allowed a whole generation of children to be poisoned and refuses to face up to it. So much for the CDC and the FDA.
"Scientific laws are similar to scientific theories in that they are principles which can be used to predict the behavior of the natural world." from the wikipedia article on theory.
@BritishSteal Theories cannot be proved, only disproved. I'm not saying the theory of gravity is wrong, it's the most likely answer given the things we know now but nothing is set in stone...that's the foundation of science, constant improvement of approximations based on observed and repeated experiments.
Mercury vapour is harmless and inert. Once mercury forms with oxygen (oxidizes) and creates Mercuric oxide, THEN it posed a health risk. The stuff in your thermometer is simply raw mercury, and therefore poses no risk. Make sure your mercury doesn't come into contact with oxygen, then your fine.
In the old days, people would sit in a room and they would boil the mercury. All those people became mentally ill. The mercury vapor itself is dangerous. Also, mercury doesn't readily bond with oxygen.
A theory is not always proven. It was a theory that the earth was flat and that stars were glass orbs so, no, a theory isn't always proven.
Besides, I didn't say that it wasn't true that autism could be caused by mercury. I said that there is evidence to prove it and evidence to disprove it but I never said that it didn't on my previous comment.
I personally doubt that autism is caused by or only caused by enviromental factors. I feel that there is a strong genetic factor but that's a theory, isn't it?
It is a THEORY that mercury causes autism. It may or may not be true. There is a lot of evidence to prove that it does and yet there is a lot of evidence to prove that it doesn't.

the majority of a person's exposure to mercury is via dental amalgams. they are called "silver" fillings but that is just a marketing technique.
canaan1967 2 years ago
Erm, thats because they are an amalgam of mercury and silver.
Idiot.

no a theory is an idea or explanation
a law is proven
ex: the law of gravity
BritishSteal 4 years ago
Actually no. Both laws and theories in terms of science are very similar.
Check out the wikipedia article for universal gravitation. Law and theory are practically used hand-in-hand.
Title is "Newton's law of universal gravitation"
while the first phrase is "Isaac Newton's theory of universal gravitation"

a THEORY is not completely proven. We simply have not found something to disprove it, such as the String Theory, or ghosts. O.O
