This building is defying conventional architectural norm, a great landmark, definitely going to visit it when I travel to Beijing next time! 中國的變化很大,大城市的發展真是突飛猛進,希望我們中國人也越變越好。
@georgewu5 THE SUCCESS OF WITHSTANDING THE EARTHQUAKE IN TOKYO, 1923, OF IMPERIAL HOTEL BY WRIGHT DID NOT COME FROM "DEFYING CONVENTIONAL NORM"! WRIGHT DID MANY THINKING FOR THE THREE STOREY BUILDING. FIRST HE USED A SYMMETRICAL CHINESE DESIGN.THEN DESIGN THE ENTIRE BUILDING LIKE A REINFORCED CONCRETE BATHTUB WITH BARS TURNED UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR. MIND YOU, HE ONLY HAD A THREE STOREY BUILDING,NOT A 40 STOREY HIGH RISE LIKE CCTV! HE PROVIDE EXPANSION JOINTS EVERY 30 FEET....DANCEWU NET
@georgewu5 ...NO RIGHT ANGLE CONNECTIONS FOR ALL THE FLEXIBLE PLUMBING INSTALLATION. WRIGHT PROVIDED REFLECTING POOLS FOR FIRE EMERGENCY DURING AN EARTHQUAKE.WRIGHT WAS A GENIUS WHO DID NOT OVERLOOK THE EARTHQUAKE, ACCORDING TO MY RESEARCH,THAT COULD BE AS POWERFUL AS 100,000 TONS OF FORCE. OR EUILVALENT TO THE ATOMIC BOMB THAT WAS DROPPED IN HIROSHIMA! WHAT MADE KOOLHAAS MORE INTELLIGENT THAN WRIGHT, THE GENIUS?! I DO NOT KNOW. GEORGE WU, A.I.A. 2010-7-2
@Mazmatickz "DEFYING CONVENTIONAL NORM" BY HAVING AN OFF CENTER PENDULUM OF GREAT MASS ON TWO SLANTED LEGS NOT SYMMETRICALLY LAYOUT , DOES SWING BACK BUT NOT NECESSARY FORTH IN AN EARTHQUAKE! "I-CHING" SAID THAT WORK WITH MOTHER NATURE; NOT AGAINST IT.YOU COULD KEEP YOUR"DEFYING CONVENTIONAL ARCHITECTURAL NORM" AND I WOULD RATHER TAKE MY 800 BILLION DOLLARS TO AN ARCHITECT WHO KNOWS THE POWER OF AN EARTHQUAKE AND DESIGN CCTV! THAT IS COMMON SENSE! GEORGW WU, AIA 2010-7-2
Chinese only build big things, because they are very very veryyyyyy tiny and small... and they have tiny penises. Austria doesn#t have to vuild such big buildings! We have one BIG Kaiser! Kaiser Franz!
If the economy continues moving at the same rate,China should overtake Japan as second in 2011 and should replace the U.S.A as the world's largest economy & superpower on earth in 2030,meaning that the U.S.A will have been the world's superpower for [90years].Great Britain was the world's biggest economy & superpower, they replaced China from Mar1736 till Nov1940 [204years]. China & India was the world's richest nation & superpower from 2500BC till March1736.
As Robert Sawyer has written, Koolhaas has given the Chinese people a Bastille to tear down when they realize what this kind of building actually means.
800million USD, not very expensive, considering that it is an iconic building-and also its the second largest building in the world by mass after pentagon
ja2: THE GREAT ARCHITECT WRIGHT PREPARED TO DESIGN HIS EMPERIAL HOTEL IN TOKYO,AND STARTED WITH THE TRADITIONAL SYMMETRICAL DESIGN TO LAY OUT THE PLAN AND THEN REINFORCED THE ENTIRE BUILDING LIKE A BATH-TUB,PEOVIDING EXPANSION JOINTS AT THIRTY FEET ON CENTER,CARRIED THE REINFORCING RODS UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR;FLEXIBLE PIPING... HE BECAME FAMOUS AFTER THE BUILDING SURVIVED THE EARTHQUAKE. I RENTED A GUEST ROOM THERE IN 1963 AND ADMIRED HIS WORK VERY MUCH! BUT WHO IS KOOLHAAS?---DANCEWU(DOT)NET

A building that symbolizes open-minded dialog for a STATE TV channel in a country with communist government? The Chinese planners don't understand much about language of architecture do they?
First of all, China is no longer a pure Communist state. To experience why, visit China now please. People in that country has far more rights than before, if not almost on par with the U.S. with all its propaganda.
Politics and art should not mix, if that is what you are referring to.
Yeah, anyone who says that China is a communist state is a retard. I do have a question for you though: You say its not a *pure* communist state; does that imply that there are any communist policies in china at all, or is it generally free-market domestically? (i don't know much about china's economic policy!) Its a beautiful building; something to be admired, and idiots in the US are sitting around not doing shit but jerking themselves off about how "progressive" they think they are.
Generally (98%), China is a free-market country. Though, the few largest, most major companies are still government owned; the most famous is probably CCTV itself.
However, even CCTV (and other government owned companies) have private commercials. Even the commercials used by and for CCTV are made by private companies. Times have changed. Those facts are true since the beginning of 1990s.
I haven't been back to China in eight years, so I myself do not know how far away China is from communism.
Of course, the Chinese government policies aren't exactly like the U.S., but it is quite close to it.
As long as you keep up with standards (hygiene, quality, non-fraudulence), you can keep and maintain a business fine.
If you talk to any 40 year old Chinese who grew up in China, they will tell you that the "Communist Party" in China is just a label now. Times have really changed.

I have been to CCTV in Beijing and seen the models of this building. It is going to be amazing when completed. Are the screens that come out of the ground real and part of the project? Randy
