@monkeychunkey been a while since you asked the q. but heres my 5 cents: on newer releases yes I want good quality which is perfected to create the atmosphere they want, but a lot of black metal history is made in peoples basements and garages, and thats a part of the awesomeness, its uncommercial and true to itself.

This rough quality is a musical characteristic of Black Metal in general...

Quorthon first incorporated such "blurry" sound quality in his music, wich many Black Metal bands would later emulate...

It creates a great atmosphere actually...
