  • Now, i know the rationing details, thanks a lot for uploading this

  • wow, 100%" luxury tax " ?? probably paid for about a third of the war .

  • What an informative informercial. I love this.

  • I've been searching for this film for years as my dad is the butcher serving Mrs. Green in the shop. I saw the clip once on a BBC programme years ago & my dad just happened to be watching at the same time. He'd often told me about the information film he'd taken part in during the war but had never seen it, so it was a treat for us both the see it together, quite unexpectedly on on TV. In the war he worked as a butcher by day and ARP Warden by night.

  • I wouldn't have thought that half a pound of lard was a necessity for most families at that time

I don't think i have ever used lard for anything

  • @The11colek Lard is great for frying, roasting and (believe it or not) baking! It is also much cheaper than oils.

  • Thanks for posting Imperial War Museum! I love the whole museum and I recommend anyone who hasn't been there to go soon.

  • People ate a lot of carbohydrates, especially potatoes and National Loaf; much less fat and meat, and tons of vegetables. Woolton Pie, Mock Duck, Cabbage Soup, tea, the result of this kind of eating was that by the end of the war, the British people were much healthier than they had ever been - and probably a lot healthier than current day Brits.

  • @ThibetanMonk You're right. It's funny how things end up like that.

  • I just found a remedy for the obesity crisis.

  • @vintagesugar82 I completely agree with your assessment and what's more, we could certainly do with a bit of the spirit of those days in the present. We're still allies in more ways than one and no matter how we may disagree with political choices, we should not allow our petty differences divide us to the point our common enemies would gladly have us. No matter whether they're bloody nazi's, communists or religious nutters, we're in this together and we really should learn from yesteryear.

  • In those times there was a strong sense of community and a "we're all in it together" attitude so there was lots of private trading and sharing so everyone helped each other get through those difficult times. Saving, budgeting and being resourceful were common attitudes in those days. If we could adopt some of those wartime principles we could get through this world reccession as they got through their ration period.

  • These were dark days 4 our fathers, the times could have been worse had the americans not helped with food and clothing parcels, lend lease was a materiel godsend providing quality US issue equipment, 4 a basically poor nation, the 30,s reccesion lingered in finances, in retrospect the british should thank the american people for so much, the nazis could and would have invaded without our american friends, thanks uncle sam.

  • In these uncertain days this was the regime, but consider this americans sent food and clothing parcels to britain, later came lend lease, which gave us a massive boost of equipment often superior to british issue, without america our island would have failed and been invaded, there are many like my father and my family who are gratefull , we say thank you to the people of america, you helped in a team allied effort, let us reflect in wisdom.

  • Patronising American commentary. Piss off Yanks!!!

  • whoah. rough dude
