  • ugh..... sucks listening to a great song that I loved as a kid and reading a bunch of dumbass posts about how a skater turned you on to the Kinks.... same way i felt when Juno had some Kinks songs.... i hate you all

  • @getmoneystreet ugh... sucks reading a post from a grumpy old man

  • @getmoneystreet My view has become whatever gets people into good music and away from shit music

  • Dope.

  • Ray Davies exhales equal parts CO2 and melody.

  • this song is beautiful, but I can't listen to it with out crying. My ex-lover "gave" me this song....

  • Always love this one!

  • Pete Quaife's favorite Kinks song

  • Ray Davies= lyrical genius easily on the level of a Lennon, McCartney or Syd Barrett. Hes unbeleivable once you get into his stuff.

  • @DaveS12382 I totally agree. Been a fan since the 60s

  • My favorite Kinks song EVER...and I've heard them all...

  • in my opinion their best

  • The Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur and Muswell Hillbillies - my favourite Kinks albums

  • This world is big and wild and half insane

Take me where real animals are playing.. I want to be back there.. On animal farm

    My animal home!

    THE CRUEL TRUTH !

  • i love playing this song.. or playing along with it i mean. thanks for the upload

  • love this whole album. it just sounds so comfortable :))

  • When they talk about the greatest rock albums of all time they never mention "Village Green". I don't know why - it's a great album. Or "Something Else" which is another great album by the Kinks.

  • don't leave out Everybody's In Showbiz, or Face to Face, or the BBC Recordings-- all lovely

  • ChickenKuba. Skaters know the best music !!

  • Dave is such an awesome guitarist.

  • This is now my 2nd favorite album after "Sgt Pepper." I just discovered it last week!! how did I miss it in my 45 years ?? The whole rural motif describes my life now. We even have a "village green" in our community organic farm behind my house. We also have "steam powered train" in the adjoining town. They are ALMOST as good as Beatles - just a few too many "music hall" numbers. John Lennon made sure to stop Paul from doing too many of those.

  • Milk and Apples !

  • is this a remaster? it sounds better than the copy i have burned on CDR.

  • Splendid superb 60's !!!!!

  • One of the best albums ever made.

    SPS

    San Clemente, California

  • In reference to the Kinks vs. Beatles: There are two types of composers. There are reformers and there are innovators and one is not less than the other. Sometimes it's pretty apparent that on a given piece Mozart was writing like Haydn. Much of the time (notice I didn't say 100%) the influence of the Beatles' music is pretty clear. They were reforming conventions and usually pushing them off the map. Except for the Brit Music Hall stuff what do the Kinks sound like? Nothing I know of. Both rock

  • Ray Davies - a real musical genius!

  • "This world is big and wild and half insane..."

  • The Beatles, The Kinks... Both AMAZING bands!!! But this is a great song, this is what the comments need to be about... not which band is better! :)

  • lol its weird but this is a rely good song to skate to

  • long live Ray and Dave Davies...two musical geniuses!!!!!!

  • best comment i think ive ever read

  • oh well thanks I try lol :)

  • switch flip crook nigga!

  • INHABITANTS, BITCHES!!!!!

  • fantastic song!

  • Stefan Janoski. Skaters know the best music...

  • hahaha that's how I found this song too. :D

  • @JohnnyC303

haha thats what made me look this upp

    inhabitants is an awesome video

  • @JohnnyC303 i met him, and asked him about that. he said he didn't pick it, but he DOES like the kinks.

  • @JohnnyC303 i came here because of stefan hes my favorite skater of all time :D

  • @JohnnyC303 Yeah buddy!

  • with tha´song you can chill the whole day...

  • Is that gunnersbury park house in Acton, London?

  • perfect song!

  • I love the idyllic, bucolic life this song embodies!

  • You are correct, but if you stop there you are only seeing about half the painting. As beautiful as this song is, its also very sad.

  • What's so sad?

  • Living among the pigs and the goats not only stinks but its damn hard work too.

Why dirty old shack? Who dreams of living in a dirty place?

Why animal farm and not, say, happiness farm? In Orwells book the utopian plan did not end so well.

So the melancholy comes from the realization that the idealized bucolic place is only a dream (head upon my pillow), not grounded in reality at all. His little girl really isnt safe from harm. Nor are we, and that's sad.

  • Nah, not really. Sure, we aren't safe from harm, but at least he can think of a place like this, where we are all safe from harm, and it's peaceful. Why dirty? I don't know, maybe he was raised that way, why an animal farm and not happiness farm? Maybe because he wants his lyrics to sound less gay. There are at least 2 sides, but w/e you can think what ever you want.

  • I think that by using gay in a derogatory manner in your argument, you have already lessend the value of your reasoning, having to resort to foul language. What MurrayShempstein has said is completely true. The fact that the title is "Animal Farm" clearly sets up a link, and therefore the lyrics can be seen as representations of the novel (which truly is a classic) and its this that allows us to draw to the conclusion of the melancholy

  • It's the way I talk, even so, I made my point clearly. I don't have to resort to foul language as you can see.

  • @LuckyNinja99 You have a good point. Forgive me, I was young and stupid. I just began reading the book Animal Farm and I hadn't realized that this song was a representation of the novel (or so I assume).

  • @Doomgath The lyrics have absolutely nothing to do with Animal Farm. Great song, yes; melancholy, yes. But has nothing to do w/ the book. The title, I guess, is a nod to the book, but any similarity ends there. It's a great effin' song, though.

  • Probably the most under-rated band of all time.

  • I love this band and I love this album. I honestly can't get enough of it. This song is one of my favourites.

  • i dont think people should compare the kinks to the beatlers, they are different bands and both contributed greatly to music.

  • Magical song gives me shivers everytime.

  • Sublime - reminds me of my Uncle John's farm on Anglesey

  • Ray sings fantastic on this...

  • A gem off one of their best albums cant understand why the record was overlooked at the time of release its a beautiful record

  • maybe because they were talking about green villages and steam powered trains while the rest of the Western world was - helter skelter- streetfighting on the barricades?

  • Every Kinks video on youtube is riddled with Beatles vs Kinks arguments. Just listen to both and shut up. You can like them without having to quantify the magnitude of your fondness for them.

  • The reason I have to bite on the bait and take the Kinks side is simple. For some reason its just assumed by a majority of people on the planet that the Beatles were the best band ever.

  • why arent they on napster

  • Fantastic song , Love it!!

  • we all love dave and george, but take a frickin' reality check, they don't stand up against Ray, Lennon and Mcartney. what made the beatles what they were was having two of the greatest pop songrwriters in the same band, the chances of that are astronomical

  • Lennon and McCartnery don't stand up to Ray--period.

  • That may be hard for a lot of music fans to accept, but it's absolutely true. Ray has been writing music for 45 years, his output of quality music is much higher than those of Lennon McCartney.

  • ojbrubak

I totally agree. If you compare McCartney's solo work to Davies's solo work theres just no comparison there.

Its good to see that someone actually sees through the hype. Thats what I hate about some beatles fans. Its always OMG ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY BEATLES!

People should look through the excessive fame and public opinion surrounding the beatles and actually look at the music itself. They'll find that actually its not better than the kinks and in some areas its the other way round

  • I think in some ways Ray's singing has gotten much better as he as gotten older.

  • see the little underlined link where it says "reply"?

  • If you hadn't have noticed, I had already pressed the reply link but for some reason when I do reply to posts they never attach onto the threads. That is obviously why I wrote their name at the front because I know that is what happens. And I wouldnt mind but your comment hasnt exactly worked has it? Next time you try to be a smart arse you should keep that in mind.

  • I cannot say how much I agree with you. I love the Beatles entirely, but sometimes people only look at their popularity. A true fan envelopes themself in the music. The Beatles had music superior to many other artists.

  • Phantastic VGPS

    Phantastic Kinks

  • My fav. kink song

  • wow huh LOL . chck out my profile for more vids. x

  • great song!!!

  • Whar a beautiful, beautiful song. Ray Davies invented Britpop 30 years before it's time. VGPS is a flawless album. A masterpiece to be treasured by one and all.

  • No, the word Britpop is a reference to the POPULAR music from the 60-70s period. If this stuff wasn't popular back then, the word wouldn't exist.

  • an amazing song... the beatles were two, john and paul but the kinks just ray

  • Screw you for saying that.

From the charter member of the Dave Davies fan club.

But really - "Motherless Child of Motherhood"? "Powerman"? "Death of a Clown"? "Love Me Till The Sun Shines", "Susannah's Still Alive" etc...

All great songs, don't buy Ray's bullshit about Dave a mere coattail-rider.

  • Dave wrote some amazing songs like strangers(definately one of my favorite Kinks songs )and all the songs mentioned above, the rest of the band was (and is extremely talented to...and I love this song. The Beatles were all amazing by themselves to man...but why are you brining that up on a kinks song?

  • I meant "Mindless Child Of Motherhood" - and yeah "Strangers" too. Dave could've led a pretty fair British Invasion band in his own right.

  • I second OldMcEyeball's sentiments vis-a-vis Dave...not to mention you're shortchanging George's contributions to the Fabs!

  • Great song. The Kinks are so cool.

  • Right.

  • "This world is big and wild and half-insane"

  • This song has such strong, deep lyrics that really make you think and reflect. Unlike the manufactured rubbish thats put out today. I love the kinks so much. Their lyrics have a certain something that I've never really found in many beatles songs.

  • great one as ever

  • hooray! never enough kinks ta very much -j9

  • I totally agree....Viva The Kinks!!

    thank you for posting,

    Joe in NH.

  • That's the place where they did promo pictures and clips for Village Green in 1968...

  • In front of Kenwood House on Hampstead Heath, North london. Went walking there the other day.

  • La mejor banda de todos los tiempos!!! VIVA THE KINKS!
