Once this kinda happened to me. I was approaching Manchester Piccadilly in a Class 150, and i had my head stuck to the window, and the window was open... and a pendolino was slithering down the side, and AS IT GOT TO ME... it blew 2-tone, right in my hear - God knows how i didnt end up on the floor...
Although, having said that, a 91 driver gave a loud, long whistle that scared the crap out of al the passengers (including me) while passing my train (another National Express train) perhaps they do it deliberately? or perhaps more likely he knew our driver or there was someone on the track.
It happened in the blink of an eye, It was more "wat wassat?" followed by a few mutterings, etc :D Dunno about upfront, they might 'av had more chance to see..
WOW that was scary! NOT!!

The 56 driver was probably expecting a bunch of rail enthusiasts with ther head stuck out of the windows, hence the horn sounding.

Probably, trains kept doing it when passing a tour I was on not long ago so it's probably just a warning to people with heads out the window.

He might have known the driver, or as you said there might have been some workers on the track or something.

If you watch in high quality & pause it at a frame about 00:21, you can see the driver laughing his face off!
XD

Nice to see that the Police are swapping their Astra Diesels with Grids. Might as well do it in style :P.

Was there a riot on the train when this passed? I filmed this in Leeds. Quite upsetting for the 56 fans if the chosen traction blasts past! 5*
