1. No, the wheels are NOT CG. They are weighted with bolts so that they will roll uphill when they are hit.
2. Yes, there is ONE frame of CG. Since the room they filmed in was not long enough, this is actually two Rube Goldberg devices which are CG'd together (although it would not have been hard to do if they had a big enough room).
Wikipedia has a great article if you want to know more.
@WakeMeUpAt1010 Well, while I know that this is all real...I still have to disagree with you on one thing....this would have been immesurably more difficult to do in one take, even if they DID have a big enough room...as the things that could go wrong and throw it all off would climb exponentially. With two short takes instead of one long one, they 'only' had to control...say 50 things? Instead of a hundred, any of which could go wrong and make you have to reset it all.
@BTIsaac *sigh* No, as is stated, it isn't. It's two shots. Which was the point of the post. Beyond the length of the room, it would also lower the amount of things affected by all the environmental factors. Thus, controlling half as many problems. And, there was 606 re-shoots, all told.
that's the first thing everybody says when they see it. wheels are weighted, so the slightest displacement and gravity does the rest of the work. genius really.
@treeguy99 Sound can actually do that. Get a glass of water some speakers and a peice of music with a really strong beat. Then blast said music REALLY load through the speaker aimed from a few feet away and watch the water dance!

Actually it wasn't real, because 1 tired don't roll up hills. -_- You can tell when the tires start rolling up the ramp with not enough force from the object behind it to force it up the hill. Also they have a delayed reaction. So no, this is not real, you can tell by a lot of other things as well.
its real, if u look it up on snopes the tires have a weight placed in them so that when the tires are bumped the weight is displaced. When the tire tries to get back into place, it ends up rolling up the ramp. Everything in the commercial is made from 2 of the only 6 handmade Honda Accords too.
Beautifully done but... Speakers don't move like that. At least not the whole speaker... So that gives the idea of a little computer/graphic help. But!!!! So what!!! It's a beauty.
According to the people who made the video, it took two takes, one for the first minute, and one for the second minute. Nothing went wrong in either half. (They split it in two because they didn't have enough space for the whole thing, and just in case something went wrong.)
They had weights inside the tires, to make them unbalanced, then balanced them with the weight a t the top, so when they got nudged, they rolled forward.
Guys, I have confirmed that it's real. I just saw an episode of "Ad Persuasion," where it showed behind-the-scenes footage of how they made it. The makers said it was ridiculously hard to make, but it's all real, with no effects. Even the upwards rolling wheels.
youtube should have more ways for people to communicate to each other....like this site gagla.com_ GAGLA DOT COM, it even has a webcam chat, how cool is that?
So what you're all saying is that there is a weight in the top of each wheel, and when the wheel is nudged, the weight moves downwards, rolling the wheel coincidentally uphill?
its real. the tyres are weighted to move. takes alot of weight but its do-able. the realy clever bit is right at the end when the car is ballenced on the trailer and the tailgate is open for ballence. the only part i cant work out is how the car stops, there is something on the floor to stop it!
If this was real I think that's cool (even cool if there was cgi used). But if they could have done this for less than 10 mil (using cgi) they should have done it, for the sake of their bottom line.
In answer to the most frequently asked question about the commercial:
"...The sequence where the tyres roll up a slope looks particularly impressive but is very simple. Steiner says that there is a weight [in each] tyre and when the tyre is knocked, the weight is displaced and in an attempt to rebalance itself, the tyre rolls up the slope..."
Gawd....get a life......don't analyse it ....enjoy it...tyres dont roll up hill no matter what pressure.....but it's trick photography so anything happens........
how do the tires role up hill with ease i mean come on i know they tried their hardest to make it real but in the end some parts must have been fake i mean when does a big tire role up hil with a little wash board , plus the energy would diapate unless it's a perpetual motion machine
Incorrect. there are many inputs of energy along the way (the car battery, etc). In addition, almost all of the car parts have some potential energy, as they are above the ground. A small tap overcomes the inertia and tranforms the potential energy in to kinetic energy. The tires have been explained by other people.
sorry.. hate to be on the other side but i still don't believe that this was all real.. even though it says its true on snopes[dot]com .. i don't know.. everything looks toooo CGI for me..
I don't get the tire bit - the tires seem to accelerate, and after they hit the next tire, they should role back down, but they continue to go up the plank...
i still dont get it how does the window pass right thru the plank of wood as if its not there. the only thing i can thikn of is if theres a line cut thru the plank that the window passes thru but i dont see it
ok i dont get the part at 1:12 when the thing hits the window. how does the window go down if the round thing is resting on the plank of wood if its thru the window?
if you notice, there are wires that are hooked up to a mechanism. when the piston rolls over the two pieces... the circuit is complete and wallah! magic :P
the plank is supported on both ends by clamps. this enables it to be as steady as possible even when the piston rolls over it... guess around 200 takes went here :)
Too all commenters stating it's not real or it's CGI, you're wrong, read up on the advert... And yes the tyres did have weights in them. Anyone seen the radio 5 version with footballs n that lol?
the tires rolled uphill bcuz they had weights on the top of them, so when they rolled over, the weights carried over to the bottome, which moves the tire. i studied this commercial in class
Take a physics class people..those tires couldn't simply have transfered enough energy from one to another like that to push each other up that ramp. A little bump on the first one would not have given it enough momentum to transfer enough energy to do the same to the other ones.
Not CGI - check snopes.com. Over 600 shots to get it right. The tires have weights at the top - when they are tipped, the weights pull downward and drag the rest of the tire upwards and forwards on the ramp.
They roll uphill because the tyres are progressively smaller. Try it yourself if you don't believe in momentum. This isn't CGI, the ad did take around 1000 takes though.
Its definitely not CGI. many people worked hard on this and it id amazing. You take a physics class first please and realize that the tires are weighted and it is simply transferring potential to kinetic energy, a simple concept. I find it sad that so many people are skeptical of the amazing.
Its not that it probably works, its real m8, heres some info on it.
This is one of the most amazing ads I've ever seen, truly a thing of beauty. Fully two minutes long, it's a Honda commercial called "Cog," the most elaborate Rube Goldberg device you've ever seen set to film, all made entirely of car parts. It required 606 film takes to get right. It's so perfectly filmed, you can't imagine it, you've just got to see it.
Just because it didn't use CGI doesn't mean some stuff wasn't "faked" In other words, They could have cheated by triggering stuff remotely or nudging certain things to make it look like it was all happening in a chain of events. To my eye certain things just do look right to me.

Answers to the two most common arguments:

Take a physics class people..those tires couldn't simply have transfered enough energy from one to another like that to push each other up that ramp. A little bump on the first one would not have given it enough momentum to transfer enough energy to do the same to the other ones.
