If you don't and they try to fly around the house, they can get severely hurt. That is why you clip their wings.

@1339LARS You don't clip off the wings, just the flight feathers, and you do it so they can't fly into mirror's, walls, windows, or even out of windows. It's very dangerous for the bird, and infact, I had a Dove that flew right into a window and broke it's neck, it ended up dead. Believe it or not, wing clipping is good for the birds, and it's the equivalence of trimming your nails.
