I DID actually once have a neighbor like that....unfortunately in order to get him to quiet down I had to thump him up one night (drunk running up and down the hall of the appartment; I had to work next morning; patience wore thin, etc). He was quite a bit quieter after that!
You bet! We used to have to suffer a old pickup truck's engine every weekday morning and a radio every Sunday. It's a good thing they've both since stopped.
I'm not sure about the moral of this short - I thought it would be about compromise. Then it ends up with the message that if you intimidate someone enough, they'll leave. At least the mouse thanked the hippo for the tea. Still a nice little short. I love it when the mouse is dancing!
OK, when I saw this, I believe the mouse's pouring of the tea into his cup was just as loud as the hippo's pouring of the tea into her cup. (I couldn't hear how her pouring was quieter and his was louder)
OMG - thank you for posting this! I always thought this was a funny and weird skit. I especially love how the mouse does the funky dance at 1:10-1:16.
Hippos do not live in the country. They live by lakes and rovers in Africa. Uganda is known for them. Also a hippo iS one of the most dangerous animals killing more people than any other animal.
That's not Frank Oz as the voice of the hippo is it? There's a touch of Miss Piggy somewhere in there. And also, the mouse sounds rather familiar, though off hand, I can't lay a finger on it.
Tahnk you so much for posting this one too! I've been waiting for this classic as well. Heh and yes-we have some neighbors who live across the street from us who throw rather loud and noisy parties so we nicknamed them "the Louds"
mind you you'd think this insert would've taught about compromise but instead it teaches that if you intimidate someone enough they'll eventually leave.
Oh yes I've had neighbors like that. Still do. This is a good cartoon. I've always enjoyed it.

One question: If quiet made that mouse so nervous, why would he think the hippo's quiet house, was a good place to spend the summer?
dubs19842008 3 years ago 2
Well, he arrived with his radio blasting, so maybe he didn't realize just how quiet the place really was.

"Quiet as a mouse" being a relative term, of course.
DiAnno13 3 years ago
It does seem that hippos would be the loud one and the mice the quiet one, maybe it was supposed to be ironic. Either way, funny ending.

I loved this as ca kid. I really would like to know who did the voice of the mouse. It is so familiar.
zacandtaylorrule 3 years ago
This was probably made before he was popular, but it sounds similar to Jerry Seinfeld. But I don't think that's who it was.

I wanted to party with the mouse! He's got great taste in music! Quiet makes me nervous too. I gotta sleep with the TV on.

You cannot hear a snail crawl across the floor. Because a snail does not crawl. It has one leg-like appendage that it walks on.

this was a big memory from my childhood! And I think that mouse lives upstairs from me as we speak D:

I loveeeeeeeed this one as a child. I was always the quiet hippo and my brother was the loud obnoxious mouse sharing a wall with me XD

That mouse was just loud and wrong! Though I did like his music. :)

Haven't seen this in ages, yes, I remember the mouse crunching on the cookie, banging the nail and dancing to loud music. This is a brilliant one.

Sounds like Frank Oz to me. I don't know who could be doing the mouse, though, but I'd be surprised if that hippo WASN'T Frank Oz!

I've had family members and roommates like that mouse. Creepy.

Me too. Folks in my family have always been on the diminutive side.
