I LOVE this match so much. I just watched it for a column for 411mania.com, and good gracious, it just gets better every time I see it. Five-star wrestling, five-star significance. A true five-star match in every sense.
An epic and extremely significant match. Talking about passing the torch. I loved how the young bucks of AJPW embraced Misawa after the match (Kobashi, Kawada and Taue).
The best part about the ending is what it symbolizes. This whole feud was based around Tsuruta not being the spry young Ace he once was, and the ending exemplifies that. If this was 85/86, Tsuruta would have kicked out no problem. But it's not. It's 1990, and he's getting up there in years. He doesn't have the energy, he doesn't have the will, and he can't take the punishment, especially noted when Misawa knocked his ass out in a 6 man, thus really sparking the feud.
The booking leading up to this match was a major key to Misawa's success as a result of this match. Days earlier, Tsuruta lost the Triple Crown title to Terry Gordy, something no one saw coming. So going into this match, NO ONE expected Tsuruta to lose another big match so soon. That's a big reason why this match helped put Misawa over. Brilliant booking.
@TheForgottenFlesh Basically Jumbo was originally slated to win. It was a last minute decision by Baba in the arena. He was sitting down and watching as people filled up and figured they were all here to see Misawa win. He sent a guy to go tell Jumbo he was losing tonight. The guy left and came back 10 minutes later saying "Count out???" and Baba said something like "Pinfall." The guy went and relayed the message and that was the end of that. Funny story with an amazing outcome.
Great match. Never seen it before. 1 Thing I notice is how some fans frown on the roll up win in big matches, but if you look at the most acclaimed matches they end in a roll up type situation. LoL. Anywys, this is a great match, but I don't know about best ever. I still give the nod to Shawn Micheals vs Bret Hart @ Wretlemania XII
Thank you for uploading this chapter in wrestling history. There are many things I would like to say about this match, but I think that Jumbo and Misawa spoke for themselves.
Look at the crowd when Misawa wins... there are people with TEARS in their eyes, this was an awesome match, thanks for posting. Does my memory fail me, or was this Misawa's ONLY singles win over Jumbo? I know this led to MANY 6-mans and tags over the years, but I swear this was Misawa's only win. Please tell me if you know different
These are amazing matches. They are so damned good at selling moves and taking bumps that there really is no comparison. When MM landed on Jumbo's knees from the turnbuckle I am surprised that he didn't break every rib in his chest or burst an organ.
I love how Jumbo clip Misawa's head with the elbow during that Crossbody at 7.23. They wouldn't do that in WWE due to it being dangerous. The fans didn't come to see the circus, they came to see 2 guys wrestle. In the way that Wrestling was designed to be!
shit, Japanese fans there were clearly more enthusiastic than kiddies in WWE

The story of how Baba decided it and told Tsuruta is a better story.

@MrWrestlingFan Please elaborate, I love to hear how Baba explain it to him.

@MrWrestlingFan IIRC Baba decided it when the fans filing in started chanting "MISAWA!" the entire time.

God I wish I understood Japanese, that announcer is absolutely losing it. This is my MOTY 1990. So great and so historically important.

This is the real fighting match!
TV announcer says " Misawa is crying ! Misawa is crying ! "
just after Misawa is lifted up by his team.
This is one of the best wresting match ever.
