  • being handy, am i able to change a zone valve myself easily?? would i have to turn water off and drain etc. or is this simply an electrical device. ....my valve seems to stay open when the stat calls for heat. i actually tap the box with my nuckle to get it to stop.

  • Yes, I have changed one myself, however you may want to first try just changing the upper electronics half of it. It simply twists off. If you have to cut and sweat in an entire zone valve as you state you will need to shut off water and drain the water from pipe. Make sure to use lead free solder and flux. Also use Mapp gas as it burns hotter.

  • usually...does it take an electrician or a plumber when you have troubles with controllers and electrical heating systems ?? thank you!

  • Usually it is the electrician who will put in electrical heating systems.

  • One question--Do you have any flow problems with the 3/4 " supply manifold?

  • None whatsoever in 20 years.

  • Right on man! I hope and pray for my masters some day!

  • So how do i test a zone valve?

  • Turn the thermostat that is associated with the particular zone valve up. Turn it up so that it is warmer than the current temperature in the room. Hot water should begin to flow through through the pipes and into the heating elements. If it does not, you either have an issue with the zone valve, circulator pump or thermostat.

If there is a lever on the zone valve you can also turn it to the on position to see if water will begin to flow through the heating elements.

  • Is there a way to accomplish "zone heating" with a forced hot air system?

  • Yes, however you need to modify the ductwork to include zone dampers so that you have multiple zones. You will also need to have thermostats in different rooms.
