This fight is the reason I never got into the UFC. Its not the man or the punch in the head, when he knows the guy is already unconcious. Its the way Tank didn't care weather he had just killed someone, and scoffed at him for lying there almost dead.
I'm my own living proof that MMA style fighting does not work in street defense. One of my fights involved 3 (armed) attackers. Ring training did not save my life. The little I knew of striking however, did. I now study a completely combative fighting art and I've never looked back. Not trying to put MMA down. I guess what I'm trying to say is that MMA stylists should rethink "WHY" they do what they do, because you do in real life what you practice at your studio.
@kungfusithlord you have somewhat of a point there, but it is better than having nothing first of all. second of all, MMA isn't an art or a style anyways, it's a sport with many different arts and styles used in it. Any combat training will do you good on the street, even if it is sport training, it isn't that hard to modify it for the street.

So when you KNOW you can't, you don't practice it because you'll accidentally do it in a ring and get disqualified. Everything you do in a ring, you train to do under controlled situations against just one person w/ a ref in there with you. So I believe that all ring fighters develop bad habits due to "rules" in a fight.

@kungfusithlord thats definitely true, but having training either way helps out a lot, and its very easy to modify your style to fight on the street. as long as you train for both the street and the ring, it will all work out. i do it, and i dont seem to have a problem.

Considering this was being watched across the USA, it seemed fair enough. Skill wise, he separated those who belonged in the ring and those who didn't.

@kungfusithlord you have somewhat of a point there, but it is better than having nothing first of all. second of all, MMA isn't an art or a style anyways, it's a sport with many different arts and styles used in it. Any combat training will do you good on the street, even if it is sport training, it isn't that hard to modify it for the street.

@devonmac95 You're right, it's not a style. But I'm saying alot of the guys that fight in the ring, tend to stick with the same tactics. Like spinning all the way around after a roundhouse kick to the face. Not good. Or only practicing fighting only one guy. You get used to that and it develops tunnel vision. You're blind to people all around you.

@kungfusithlord that is just called a bad habit. Not every one does that, just the people who developed the bad habit over time. You do have a good point about the multiple people, but if I were in a fight with like 3+ people, I would run like hell haha.

@devonmac95 Right, that's exactly what it is. A bad habit. Every violent thing you're allowed to do on the street, you can't do in a ring. So when you KNOW you can't, you don't practice it because you'll accidentally do it in a ring and get disqualified. Everything you do in a ring, you train to do under controlled situations against just one person w/ a ref in there with you. So I believe that all ring fighters develop bad habits due to "rules" in a fight.

@kungfusithlord I don't know I used to sympathize with your position but one thing competition affords it's adherents in the ability to handle adrenal dump which no amount of Dojo / Kwoon training can ever really prepare you for. That being said if you want to hold your own on the street, the domain in which you compete should be relevant. I'm sure I'll get all kinds of naysayers but my hierarchy is as follows:
1) Boxing
2) Wrestling / Jiu-Jitsu
3) Kicking Arts

@rico925 I understand what you're saying but I've competed before. If anything, physically & mentally I feel the same. Adrenal dump? I've always been prepared for anything. I got disqualified for letting loose everything I had. He was undefeated 10 yrs in the ring. 1st time for me. Hospitalized him & felt bad about it but I did warn him. My competing was HIS idea. No more for me. I don't wanna prove my point at the cost of someone's health. Frankly, I'm surprised he's still walking.

@kungfusithlord thats definitely true, but having training either way helps out a lot, and its very easy to modify your style to fight on the street. as long as you train for both the street and the ring, it will all work out. i do it, and i dont seem to have a problem.

Not really talking about what tank did in this fight. I'm talking about the way it was back then. Before, it was only no biting or eye gouging. Considering this was being watched across the USA, it seemed fair enough. Now they added more rules, weight classes, strict time limits etc. It's become so mainstream now people think that ring fights mirror that of what's seen on the street. So they now think that MMA training is convertible for street defense. Not true.

All those high and might black belts out there had something real to fear... the loss of respect garnered when beaten by someone who lists his martial arts title as "bar fighter", tank had balls that you just don't see today

Attempting to grab Abbott head-on is the worst thing you can do against him. He is surprisingly quick for a man his size and he will avoid you or squirm out fast and just murder you within a few seconds with those powerful slugs.

@Vincanni Yeah he had a really strong body and hits. He didnt have any good technique just raw power. He also had a big problem with running out of steam if they fight wasnt over quickly.

When other guy tried to grab him he showed amazing sprawl/wrestling techniques. Don't ever be fooled! There is no such thing as a pure untrained fighter. Even Kimbo had years of boxing before he was a street brawler...

They might not be the "best in given sport but they are trained fighters!

Kimbo also got knocked out by a guy with pink hair, no less. And all of Kimbo's backyard fights, suck. His manager stepped in on one of them cause he was tired... or bleeding, crying or something. @kanarussu Tank was very important to MMA. Sure he wasn't that skilled (he was more of a gatekeeper), but his fighting style and attitude were extremely important to get good audience numbers. On top of that he was one of the first strikers to do better than average in MMA.

The Gracie family they are the ones that was really important for MMA right from the begin, but that is your point of view and I respect that.

@kanarussu The Gracies are definitely the most important individuals to MMA both front and behind the lines. I never said Tank was that important. He was important because he was an exciting and charismatic fighter and people paid JUST to see him. Before Vitor, he was the first striker to have any type of success in MMA, for that reason their fight is considered a passing of the torch. Skill wise, he separated those who belonged in the ring and those who didn't.
