At the time when he said that, he meant that he wasn't going to do those kind of records just to satisfy a MAJOR LABEL. since he chose to go independent, he got the freedom to do what he wants. and thats what he did, gave us an album thats balanced with different styles of music. you still have to blend in with today's music. the difference is he didn't do it just for a check. thats a BIG difference.
