Good idea in principle, fair play to dick denby for trying to introduce it to the goverment. wouldnt work everywhere due to lenght as most rdc's etc are tight enough as it is. but would work maybe for trunking to and from set points.. but then that brings up the problem of diversions due to an accident/road closure and so on. what would happen then? would have to wait it out i suppose??
That's a sweet looking truck would love to drive that !. The question is would you have to take another test as the Americans call these super B's other wise known as road train's in Australia and in some parts of U.S.A.
Although I think to be classed as a road train I think it's 3 or more trailer could be wrong.
I dont think that our roads are up to a truck that size, for a start round about arnt wide wnough, and even if they were there woudl be a tremendouse amount of scuff going on, so the tarmark would need replacing a fair bit. Plus railfreight seems to be getting better nowadays, and I think trucks like this might pose a seriouse threat to the railfreight sector. if anything needs to be done its open new railway lines. Still a exelent idea but not for the uk, maybe the USA thoe.
@EWS60500 In the video you can see the middle bogie turn the wrong at first before turning the right way. This gives the combination the same turning circle as an artic with one trailer. There is no reason why tarmac damage should be any greater as Denby's proposal doesn't require an increase in weights and the combination has more axles. The proposal is for bulk truncking along agreed routes.
@EWS60500 (Part 2) I agree that rail could play a bigger role but we have a problem with railfreight terminals being turned down at planning. John Prescott even became Transport Minister promising more freight on rail and then turned down the planning application for LIFE at Colnebrook near Heathrow.
hub companys will be buying these trucks for over night next day deliverys. to handle mr brown future every one on the inter net. more jobs for van drivers.more white vans.large trucks.royal mail has build a hub in stoke.8- 10 football pitchs.M1 A1 is full at night with night freight. and it can only double.on line companys are recording good xmas.more people each day go on line.meaning jobs, and small companys can work with large companys together on the net and deliverys.
Its on the same concept of a super b in a canada,i moved here 5 years ago from the uk and have been pulling super b,s for the last 2 years, they will go places that you cannot get with a normal artic trailer, mine are 60 foot long and we have a gross weight of 63.500 kgs.
The biggest hazard on our roads are car drivers. They have poor observation and forward planning skills. Car drivers cause more accidents than HGV drivers could ever dream of.
now, what would be able to travel up and down the country easily, longer than this lorry? I do belive its a train! They always used trains in the past, and they would be best for this job in my opinion.
i think these would be ok on the motorway used from trunking stations cant see a problem aspecialy if its carrying light goods like toilet rolls etc wouldnt be as heavy as most trucks today
As the fella says below, the arguments against this are pretty poor. People are saying its to big for our little streets and they are right BUT what they dont understand is this wont be used for multi drop genral haulage. Its simply going to spend most of its time on the motorways going from hub to hub. I dont see a problem with it if the route is planned ahead and only reputable transport companys use them and not get into the hands of micky mouse companys.
would be ok on some of our motorways, but sometimes m-roads are not meant for this monster. they can be narrow, two laned. And especially with motorcycles, you wouldn't want to be caught halfway along this beast on the motorway, because your so small and the driver has even less chance of seeing you, and you have even less time to get out of an even larger danger zone: between lorries back and front.
I have to disagree,, how will the "blind spot" be any different in this to a normal artic?? it wouldnt. I havent held my class 1 license long but i think car drivers should be more educated with regards to large vehicles. Dont get me wrong u do get tosser truck drivers and when im in my car, the last thing i want is to be stuck behind a fully loaded artic!! its just that some times car drivers simply have not got a clue.
would be pain in the butt for me on my motorcycle. I can do 60mph (thats it). I overtake lorries, because they usally do less (enough to fall into the distance once Ive overtaken them). If I gt stuck behind this monster, by the time i performed an overtake, I'd have one very pissed off line of traffic behind me. Also, if driver made error, it would be harder to escape to front or back of this thing, if caught in the middle. dont really need educating, coz experience it on the roads for real...
then sometimes I get a head wind, which slows me down to under 50mph, so the lorry would go to overtake me, which is another pain in the butt when you have a small motorcycle. Then I'd get a small hill and would do upto 70mph, and so it continues... I dont want to sit in the slow lane doing 50mph all the way somewhere because its too much hassle for me to overtake this beast. So, me and this monster truck would get right on each-others nerves. I consider time overtaking lorries to be dangerous.
anyway, its better for lorry drivers if they have less cargo / drivers? I mean, they will need more drivers which is better. Its a bit like telling teachers that they can have twice size classes; my first thought as a teacher would be "oh no, we're going to find it hard to get a job now"?
Good for Dick Denby, the rail network is dead. If joe public realised that it would make their tesco corn flakes cheaper they'd want it. Its a joke these people saying our roads cant cope it would be used for trunking from distribution center to distribution center something the trains can never do. Time the government subsidised rail-freight was shut down
On the face of it, this looks like a good idea to me.
It seems a whole lot more sensible than current "get everyone to drive in a computer controlled train" ideas for reducing drag/CO2.
I can understand it might be a problem on badly laid-out roads but I think the government should fix the roads, rather than illegalise something that makes good environmental and economic sense.
But I have to admit, until we see these things on the road in numbers we wont know if they work.
i worked for denbys in lincoln for 3 ish year and never used it so normal driver where never aloud near it only the taining man was alowed to tow it so if there never traing use we will never know
It's an interesting idea and construction, but I'm a little confused as to why it's better than a regular 25.25-meter rig. One could argue that this is much better in the city, but I would say that trucks like these have no place in a city, they should run on motorways to industrial sites and supermarkets. Anyways if this can coerce the UK to get with the times and allow 25.25-meter vehicles on the road that's good for everybody.
They are hydraulically steered. The proposed GCM would be 60 tonnes, but Denby have a large number of possible clients who have a business case at 40 tonnes.
I like the way freinds of the earth complain about these dnt they understand that it carrys 2 trailers instead of 1. I drive a MAN TG-X i had my mirror ripped off one time by those stupid low lifes then enviromentel idiots cos me and my mate was messing about reving the engine well wot can i say a MAN TG-X the most powerfull commercail truck in europe who wouldent wnt t rev the fuker
On September 20th, the Confederation of Logistic and Transport (C I T L) are having a 'come and see and drive' day at Bruntingthorpe near Leicester, UK. If you have an HGV licence and apply in advance you can have a drive.
Even amount of pivots, you turn the same way as you want the trailor to go. Odd amount of pivots[current artics] turn opposite lock to put the trailor where you want.
As you can see from the film clip, the middle bogie turns the wrong way before turning the right way, so the rig has exactly the same turning circle as a single trailer artic.
Dick Denby invited me along to last year's open day. He then swung it for me to have a drive, although if you took along your HGV licence you too could have a drive.
I don't think the sound track from "The Cutting Edge" was very suitable.......I kept expecting the truck to so sumersaults or something else impossible.
I don't know what "The Cutting Edge" is. The music is "The Race" by Yello and it has been used in so many TV/Films/Videos over the last twenty years. I'm not very original.
What is the name this music ?

This would be great in the US or Austrailia but in Britains overcrowded narrow roads it would be a nightmare for every other road user.

You know that Dick Denby took it out on the road today but the Police were waiting and escorted him back into his yard?
He has a long list of customers who would use it. But we are talking about truncking between sensible locations.
