An early example of the power of media. We are led to believe that, if it's in print or on radio or television, it's true. Commercials are a great example of this effect. They tell us how to dress, what to eat, our lifestyle, and how we should be - and to consume. If you don't consume, you're considered cheap. I love this piece of history, because it p*ssed people off.
Just imagin...the world was in chaos, WWII getting started. Europe had begun rounding up people for extermination and the nightly news was filled with invasion after invasion. Then to top it off it was Holloween night. Not the funny goblin stuff like today. Back then, people knew it as the night when demons roamed about. (Read Enclycolpedia on Holloween) Broadcast nationwide! WOW! Now, that's a Disney ride to remember.
This is a prime example of the stupidity of the American people...i wonder wot next..."oh no a man dressed like a clown is going crazy in a fictional city, but never fear a man in a bat costume will save us all!" LOL
Yeah, we were so dumb back then that we also figured Germany wouldn't follow a goofy looking, war-mongering lunatic, and if they did, the rest of Europe would take care of themselves without us. Stupid us, huh? Do your research, genius: mass hysteria over fictional radio broadcasts has happened all over the world at one time or another.
The way you hear it here is how radio sounded in those days. Europe's countries believed Hitler and now they fear Muslim terrorists. Besides Israel, the US is the only country with balls enough to take them on. "And kick some"! At least we stand-up!
yeah well i cant believe anyone would have taken that seriously...i mean soooo many parts of the acting were so lame that no one could possibly believe it was real
I'd like to know where this video came from. I'd like to download part of it for a school project. I can't find it anywhere online other than here...if anyone knows where to find it in downloadable form, I'd appreciate knowing. Thanks.

I believe a library might have it. It is a classic after all.

Yeah orson said it was scripted but people tuned in after the beginning and thought everything was real and not a show.
