this is coming from a pure heavy metal fan & been so for years and years, i love alison krauss's music and my eye's fill with water listening to this song, fantastic song!!!!
My daughter lost her husband of only 37 years of age this past April, we played this song at his funeral and it is only now that I can listen to it without tremendous pain, although it still makes me cry...but also gives me comfort. Just Beautiful
I think Harpers Ferry is so beautiful. I live in Loudon County VA and Harpers Ferry is one of my favorite places to walk around and enjoy the wonder of nature. That, along with this song was really wonderful. Thank you.
Nice video for a beautiful song. Love Alison Krauss and who expected a duet album with Robert Plant? It's nice to hear an Autoharp in new music. It's so unusual.
I searched for this song and finally found it through the lyrics. We saw Alison K. at Charlottesville, VA and she did a simple rendition of this song with a soft string backup. Having just lost my mom, it brought tears to my eyes. Nice to see Harper's Ferry here too. It's a lovely place. Kathy in PA
I thought this was the beautiful voice of Kate Rusby when I first heard it but Alison Krauss's voice is just as wonderful. Her and Robert Plant work really well together on this. I shall check out more of her stuff
This song is so beautiful. I don't live far from the author of this song, Doc Watson, he wrote it with his darling Rosa Lee. Couple of months ago I heard Robert Plant sing this live at Merle Fest.
Your video outshines the way the music was done. A pairing of Allison's voice and simple instruments would have been much better. No reason the play within the melody distracting from what would have been touching. There may be some good cuts on the album, this however, wasn't one of them.
This was played at my sister's funeral...the lyrics are so moving and the opening just brings back the memories of that day. Its a beautiful beautlful song.........
this is one of the most beautiful songs with such meaningful words i have ever heard. It was played at my brother in laws funeral....such a most special amazing person i have ever met who was loved by everyone. When i hear this song it brings tears to my eyes & a lump in my throat but my brother in law loved the song & i realize why....such a brave man who never once was bitter about his illness.R.I.P John xxxx
To Woodfamily above...I lost my husband 7 years ago in a logging accident. Yes this song makes me think of him and the long journey my daughter and i have been on. We only had one child, I can't imagine your journey with 6. Let their love surround u on your journey :)
My husband was killed at work and I was left on this earth with all six of our children. This song hits me hard. It's lovely but hits me deeply to the core. My youngest was just born and to think of my own long journey alone is hard to take,
@dolmenman1 I will never leave you willingly and am doing my best to fight this terrible disease - Our Long Journey will be together for a long while yet.
My husband was killed over 30 years ago in an accident near our home. I was 8 mo. pregnant with our 1st child. I thought I would never heal, be happy, look to the future nor be able to accept the past w/o feeling such grief. But it can and does happen.I am 60 yrs old now, and have led a full life.I look forward to the day when I will meet my husband and all who began their long journey before me.Our physical form passes away but our souls live forever. You're in my prayers.
@Arbuncbukle9- My husband was killed by a machine at his workplace 15 years ago.Our son was only 5 months old.My heart goes out to you honey-I`ve felt the very same thing, but life does go on and happiness ,healing, and the ability to look forward to the future does happen.I know we will all be reunited again in Heaven someday.Until then we all need to remember our loved ones who have passed would never want to see us anything but full of happiness and love.
@woodfamily I hope you have found comfort somewhere by now. Bless you all. Grief is a process that sometimes takes a long time. Shed tears for you all. I am almost 70 and my life is not for much longer, so grief is a waste of time and bother to me, but I understand the need to grieve, and still do. Have you ever heard the song "Held" by Natalie Grant?
after listening to this i cannot wait to buy some plant/krauss albums...also, the photos in this vid are simply amazing...i want to go there lol...where were they taken???
As a looooong time Alison fan and even though I grew up on Led Zep, I was pretty upset with her venture with Plant - But this is a pretty darn good stuff. Maybe it will introduce folks to Alison's incredible musical soul - she IS music. Plant's voice is OK but to me it's like a buzz saw next to a Stradivarius. In his interview, its clear he knows just how lucky he is. If you want to hear the depths of her voice check out "Oh, Atlanta" and "Heaven's Bright shore" here.
It took this pairing for me to check out Alisons other work and discover what an amazing talent she is. "Maybe" is awesome.....If I had to pick a color for her, it's white. Very pure voice. As a Plant fan, his voice is a rainbow of color. There is so much charactor to his voice. For pure emotion, listen to his version of "Song to the Siren" There is a vast differences in their voices and styles, but contrast is interesting....has a certain romance.
There is a reason this album won album of the year. It will go down in history as one of the best albums ever. I am a rock and roller and want to see Plant reunite with Zeppelin, but for now, he too is on a journey. When the journey is over he will rock with the best, Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones.
Christian? That is funny. Americans use to be Christians so what gives...? Anyway, I think cowboy, folksy, "traditional culture", community and "true" when I hear this song. Also art... :) btw, Have you heard what people are boasting, I mean, singing... these days??
Beautiful, and you chose some lovely pictures to go with it. I'm 70, still listen to stones, beatles, ray charles, etc. Never heard of this woman and don't like country music. Now I can't wait to get my grandson to put this on my ipod for me!
w7mjr : I played this song at my dog Heidi's memorial right before she was cremated. The first time I played the song was the night before she died. We were both lying in bed together, and it was the last music we heard before she died the next morning.
I first heard this version the day after my beloved Grandma passed away. What a flood of emotion! I missed her so much but was happy too - Robert and Alison convey that emotion so well.
I know exactly what you mean. I can't listen to this song without my eyes welling up a bit. I flash back to my Dad's face when my Mom died, and of my feelings when my Dad died just a year later. This song is just such a beautiful, sad yet optimistic send-off to a loved one.
I agree that this song is beautiful. They have a lovely harmony. I love Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, Folk music and I think Alison Krauss has a pretty voice.
However, this song was written by Doc Watson and Rosa Lee Watson.I'd put that in the description if i were you. :)
well, i am a die-hard zeppelin fan with a taste for folk music, but i don't get much out of this duet. it must just be the way their voices blend or something. it is pretty good stuff, i can tell, but its just not for me
shit.. this is what zep was all about. new territories-leaving old standards by the wayside. new directions. does anyone get why robert has chosen this path. he is doing more service to zep than pagey or jonesy.
I could go on but, my god zep thrived on evolving and to go back and do the same shat is pointless..
I totally agree...love em both but its like oil and mountain spring water...pages open tuning acoustic would have been a better fit than plants mumbling behind her beautiful voice.
I played this song at my dog Heidi's memorial right before she was cremated. The first time I played the song was the night before she died. We were both lying in bed together, and it was the last music we heard before she died the next morning.
I just had to have my poodle Brandy put to sleep a few weeks ago, she was 14, I miss her so much and I know she is iin heaven with my Mom. I will make that long journey someday and will see them both . Beautiful song
I am from the Harpers Ferry area. Doc Watson and his wife wrote this song. Saw the tour last night and the show was incredible. DOnt miss it if you have a chance. Plant and Krauss harmonies are beautiful. Also spellbinding when allison sings down to the river.
Please think of my wonderful friend, whose long journey ended Sunday, June 29, 2008..It is more than ironic, that Allison and Robert Plant would be together for this beautiful, and many more tunes, that are so appropriate to Melvin Theodore Plastino. 03/17/60 -06/29/08
