Nat's rendering of this Christmastide ode is the best, truest, manly lovely, most melodic and purely heartfelt and reverential. Annually through the Epiphany and beyond I play it over and over intermittently as a celestial anthem, heaven sent and perfect. (And love the clarion flourishes. And I studierte Deutsch.) Frohliches Neues Jahr!
Who cares if his German pronunciation isn't perfect? At least he tried and showed respect to all Germans by singing this in German instead of English. :)
Oh Tannenbaum is an old German melody particularly well-known from the little music boxes so popular during the last century. The tune has been ascribed to a twelfth-century song called Mihi Est Propositum: in Germany it became associated with Laurigar Horatius and about 1824 was adapted to its present form as carol. ( Still later it became the basis for Maryland, My Maryland.)

Who gives a damn what his pronunciation was like?! Why are some of you so freakin critical? The song was recorded YEARS AGO there is nothing you or anyone can do about it now so seriously get over it. Besides the song is still absolutely beautiful and his voice is amazing as usual.
i do not no the German language... but a song must come from the hearth to span so many generation ,,,, and yet get the feeling of Christmas... every year(new and fresh feeling as if is being song for the first time ) what a song and a singer

@derAndy19851 When Nat married Maria Ellington in the late 1940's she encouraged him to concentrate on his diction so that he might not only speak English with more authority but also enable him to sing in other languages more easily. Nat recorded not only in German, but in French, Italian, and many songs in Spanish.
I don't think he really understood or spoke fluently in any language other than English. It was to his credit that he worked hard to sing in other languages.
Dear Nat. Sorry we never met, although we shared three years on that planet (1962 - 1965), my favourite is "Brazilian Love Bird" (I hope I have the right name for that very nice Nat King Cole Song)
his Deutsch pronunciation is Furchtbar!!! absolutely laughable. they should have corrected him before they recorded this for all time. what a beautiful voice he had though
@Pisces31660 To be fair, most Germans speak English in exact the same way Nat speaks German. Sure his pronunciation isn´t perfect, but if you are German, neither is yours in English. I am an English teacher in Germany, and often Germans do not believe that they have an accent, when in fact they do. It´s not easy to nail the pronunciation of a foreign language, especially not German.
@Pisces31660 - Did you understand him? If so...it was good enough. When people come to the states and speak English, even haltingly, I don't mock them.

I really like Nat King Cole.
But in this song, there is a couplet that Nat sings that doesn't seem to match the lyrics found online...
Wie oft hat nicht zur Weihnachtszeit (he says: vent-eh-zeit ...from what I hear)
ein Baum von dir mich hoch erfreut! (he starts: einz vite von dir... as far as I can tell, as if counting eins zwei)
Did someone give him bad lyrics to sing or just a different version??
Matters to me 'cause I like to karaoke with him ;)
