@Flumphinator Well there are two responses to this question. Both are correct: A) cover will increase your chances of survival in ANY gunfight, so if you are in a gunfight as a civilian you should know how to use cover properly. B) I have the general philosophy that every free person should work towards some basic combat skills, useful in an uncertain future.
@Flumphinator Imagine Russia or China finally decides to wage war on us. You happen to stumble upon the body of military personnel or a Police officer. You figure, the Ivans or Chinos are gonna kill me whether I'm a combatant or not; and if the time comes where I have the chance to save my own life or another persons... You should have the confidence to pick up a gun and defend yourself. Whether it be a thug or an invading Army.. or zombies.
@Flumphinator cover is always preferable to standing in the open.. if you ccw then youd be better off ducking behind somthing or giveing yourself some kind of protection for your body.
@Flumphinator how often does a civilian find themselves in a hand to hand combat? Just because you may never need to know it dosn't mean it isn't worth knowing. better to know it and not need it then need it and not know it
@stanthema always be prepared to improvise, sometimes when clearing obstacles you have to crowd cover too. I can only offer generalizations and hope you understand their application.
@MrJaime198 You aren't the first person to mention it. Obviously it doesn't effect everyone but I have plans to reshoot this video with my new camera. (This vid is one of the most important ones IMO)
When the point was made on "cover" and "concealment", I couldn't help but pause the video and think. I was taught that "cover" was a hard object standing between you and your target or attacker and "concealment" was a form of making ones self harder to visually detect. I can see where you're coming from where you can say that "cover" can provide "concealment" and I didn't want to question your intelligence by any means but I just thought that I would try to clear up any wild questions.
@jdapostolik01 Cover is something that protects you from fire, concealment is something between you and the enemy (that won't stop a bullet) camouflage makes you harder to visually detect. Those are the "three Cs"
@excurrahee Doesn't it seem that if I had something between me and the enemy he couldn't see me that well either? So wouldn't it also be some form of concealment?
@excurrahee But wouldn't cover also provide some form of concealment? It would expose less of your body as a target to your attacker or the enemy. Granted the barrels aren't filled with dirt so within the circumstances of the lesson they would be horrible cover but good concealment. I they were filled with dirt then you would be getting the best of both worlds. And yes, camouflage doesn't stop a bullet but it does make you harder to detect or "get a solid bead on you." Just trying to clear it up
@jdapostolik01 Cover certainly provides concealment, but concealment doesn't provide cover. Concealment is nice but cover is better. If you want to rank what you want between you and the bad guy: cover > concealment > camouflage >pink bunny suit. You could read my web page on the subject or google and read FM 21-75
Right, as you said they have their advantages. .22 uppers usually cost as much or more for a nice one then a AR based .22 full rifle (Sig Sauer 522, M&P 15, Umarex, etc.). Of course a .22 upper on your AR/M4 provides more practice and increasing familiarity with your AR/M4 trigger pull, weight , handling and etc.. so yeah pros and cons to most everything :)
Nice video - one thing though, right around 4:13, when you're going to presentations from behind cover, why didn't you use your non-dominant side when firing around the left barrel? It takes a while to learn, but dominant/non-dominant (weak side/strong side, or whatever they're calling it these days) lets you maximize that cover. Thanks for making that video, good starting point for many folks.
@Czechsix Good point, I had intended to discuss this (if you notice I do it for the first string) but I forgot. While I don't think it's as important as some, it is an important tool for the tool box. When your moving rapidly and cover presents itself to the left and right (or targets present to the left or right of what cover you have) it's best IMO to stick with the dominant hand. But if you have time to take a good position it's best to show as little of yourself as possible.
@ButtersEvilTwin An arm length is probably good for most situations, but the further the better. Make sure you practice moving through your house and understand how far back you can get in a home defense situation.
@VAND4LL Be sure and check out the website for more information. There are two places this is discussed. "Cover and Concealment" on the main menu bar and Pictures of shooting from cover under miscellaneous pages
Very cool. . . I always get strange looks when I do practical shooting drills at the range. . . but I guess using a beat up cardboard box as cover would be a bit odd to those target shooting types, that and the lying on the ground, kneeling, roll over prone and defensive handgun drills. =) I also liked that you are using .22LR to train with, its the only way I can afford to actually practice enough to be decently proficient.
@excurrahee I agree. The scoring is the weakest point of all action shooting. Even worse it might encourage to learn wrong techniques. Once we tried to develope a way to score the proper use of cover but afterall it seemed to be nearly impossible to make it unambiguous enough for any kind of match.
Cover is your best friend.

@sabres0 Well you can try standing in the open or crowding cover while someone shoots at you... see how that works.

Just curious, not meaning this as ridicule, but when does a civilian ever find themselves in a gunfight where cover is necessary?

I agree completely with theis video, but i will say that while these positions are best you can be flanked easier and be forced to hug the cover.
