McCartney was the Beatles from 1967. The rest of the Beatles only had guest tracks from that time onwards. until the demise. Paul drove the band on as far as HE!!!!! COULD GO!!!
By 1968 the rest of the band had enough of the Beatles. For nearly 3 years Paul was the Beatles. Lennon/Harrison all did well in early split!! Paul took longer to kick into gear!! and boy did He show Lennon/Harrison how its done later in life. No paul=no Beatles!!!!!!!!!
I love this song. It`s beautiful. i can`t believe there are people who call themselves fans of the beatles who has the guts to put a genius like Paul McCartney down. Paul McCartney was not inferior to John Lennon. He was just as great.
Paul McCartney's "Ram" was the first album I ever bought. I was 12 years old in June 1971 when I bought it. This song takes me back. I loved it. In just over a month I'll turn 53. Time bloody flies. Where did all that time go? Ram on, give your heart to somebody soon, right away...
Everyone's talking about what the album would be like if the beatles would have stayed together. I had a dream once where I was in a room observing the Beatles rehearsing song from a new album that never existed. It was so cool, the song I heard was incredible, and I saw the album cover, it was like a sunburst sort of. I woke up, and I could not remember how the song went. (Im a writer/composer so I write songs in my sleep all the time).
Yea, well I thought it was "Raymooond, give your heart to somebody" since I was 17. But, that didn't make any sense, but it was all I could come up with, so I moved on.
I am a long-time Beatles fan starting in 1964 when I first saw them on the Jack Paar Show (1 month before Ed Sullivan). I agree with you that Ram is the most representative of what the Beatles would have sounded like in the 1970s. It is very melodic with great songs and vocals. Just add "Imagine", "It Don't Come Easy," and "My Sweet Lord" -- then, you would have contributions from all of the Fab Four!!
I feel sorry for all of you who feel the need to POINTLESSLY ram-ble on (pun intended) about how Paul was the real genius or John was the real genius or "Ram" isn't as good as "Imagine" or "Imagine" isn't as good as "Ram" or neither of them are "All Things Must Pass" or WHATEVER. Just enjoy all of them! Sheesh!
McCartney should do a tour and play this album in its entirety. "Ram" is a brilliant record. His songwriting is playful and sharp, the melodies are fantastic, and his singing is amazing. He excells at what I like to call "vocal gymnastics". Paul is at his very best here. Time has only made this album sound better. A++++
I've always regarded Ram as McCartney's best album. Ram on is one of those delightfully unique melodies that linger affectionately in the mind. The difference between Lennon and McCartney was that the former wrote as he was inspired to and with occasional brilliance whilst the latter wrote relentlessly even if many of the songs were mediocre yet the occasional gem cropped up.
@dsausagesandwich I would add to that that even McCartney's more trivial works were more interesting than John's. Also, Paul could have written anything John wrote, but there's no way in hell John Lennon could have created "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," or "Dear Boy," or other Paul creations. They're just too astonishingly creative.
@marvy1118@marvy1118 You could say the same about McCartney not being able to write I'm The Walrus, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Across the Universe, Happy Xmas (McCartney's offering is trite by comparison) and No 9 Dream,. The point is, they both wrote what their muse moved them to write. I am a die hard fan of them both and defend their status as brilliant songwriters. They were two entirely different song writers each giving us best of both worlds.
During the Beatles, they were equal. Lennon lost his juice, though, even according to him. Poor guy. No wonder he was so depressed in the '70s, watching Paul rocket while he lay on his bed watching TV for days.
@marvy1118 Plastic Ono Band and Imagine certainly outshone McCartney's best. Cold Turkey and Instant Karma were post-Beatles. Harrison made a similar comment regarding Lennon losing his writing touch. McCartney dismissed this as conjecture. McCartney was the only person who knew Lennon intimately (besides Ono) and was aware of the inner struggles Lennon faced. Woman, I'm Losing You and Grow Old With Me promised great things from Lennon but providence had other plans..
@dsausagesandwich Whoa, I can't agree with that. There's a degree of sheer musical brilliance in "Dear Boy" or "Back Seat of My Car" (just to name two) that no song on Imagine has, even though it has some great songs.
Also, I read that Lennon, post-Beatles, said himself (to Yoko, I think, which was reported later by Yoko) that he'd "lost his muse," that he was "beginning to not be able to write good songs anymore." You could probably Google that and find it.
@marvy1118 It's a matter of taste at the end of the day. I agree that Dear Boy, Monkberry Moon Delight (great vocal), Ram on, Three Legs and Uncle Albert (a masterpiece) are McCartney at his melodic best. But the songs lack the emotional depth of Mother, Isolation, Love, Jealous Guy, Give Me Some Truth and How. Lennon might have lost his muse and retreated for a while, most artists do. McCartney lost his muse after Band on the Run but kept going. Venus and Mars to London Town are mediocre
I am not sure, but this was a sort of "I do apologize to you all",and playing a ukulele, especially to you George sort of Song...How Do You Sleep by John and Wah Wah by George ....Decipher this.
I can't help but think that everytime I hear this album, it makes me think Ram is what The Beatles could've sounded like if they had continued into the 70's. I'm probably going to get a lot of heat from a lot of Beatles fans but does anyone else agree with me?
@1zappa Paul McCartney pretty much is The Beatles in the 70's. John was too lazy to write nearly as much music as Paul, and Ringo and George would still be pushed around by John and Paul.
@1zappa I don't agree with you but it's just a difference of opinion and who am I to give "heat". I always imagine what a Beatles album would of sounded like if they were to never break up, but I don't think my mind could comprehend. They probably would of come up with a ground-breaking concept that people would still be trying to get their heads round this century. Potentially, they could of had Maybe I'm Amazed, What Is Life, Junk, Come And Get It, Instant Karma, Love...I would buy that album
@1zappa I feel like Paul always tried to get that same "Beatles" sound with his solo albums. Especially in the harmonies. Every now and then he'd hit a note that sounded a bit like George or John. I think if you take their solo albums from each year (ie all of their albums from 71) and put them on shuffle, you'd get a decent representation of what the Beatles would have sounded like through the 70s. That being said, I also believe that they expressed themselves better post-Beatles.
Maybe it's just me but every single time I listen to a Paul's song, I get the idea that it's incomplete. It happens not only with Ram. All the recent work he's done has this feel too. Looks like it misses a Lennon touch on his songs or whatever. If I commented on Ram specifically, however, I would say that it not only misses something but that it sounds like he's just putting the thoughts together. Still unfinished songs. It's just him and his piano rehearsals, which is what makes the album.
@menoziinrevoltado I think your point is true for some of his solo stuff, but not so much this one. He certainly missed Lennon's input, not to mention the other two, but it's equally true that Lennon missed him.
@vantalge Yes, for sure, they missed and needed each other to make history but, when I look at their solo careers, I see that Paul isn't at his best. When I listen to Paul's rock'n'roll songs (i.e. "Flaming Pie", which is my favorite one in the album), it kind of needs a Lennon-ish touch. The same happens to his more delicate songs. I understand that he's not supposed to do Beatles-ish stuff all the time but... maybe I'm biased, I don't really know. John had more complete tracks in my opinion.
@menoziinrevoltado its not exactly "incomplete" its intentionally back to basics and unlike John,Paul hated Phil Spector's heavy production of songs.h e hated the orchestra on Long and Winding Road for example, and Pal did it his way, playing all the instruments on Ram basically. hence the difference between Lennon & McCartney solo work they aimed for a different sound. John also always hated his own voice for some reason and always had producers change it around alot, another sound difference
@QueenBeatlesWings I didn't say it was, I said it had an "incomplete feel", which is what makes the album. That's what I wrote down there. By the way, his songs look basic but look at the orchestration on them... yeah, lots of overdubs as well but he managed to give this raw (raM) background on the album. Lennon invited other musicians and whatnot but Paul had the Wings crew too but they have different styles and together, nobody beats them. Cheers. :-)
its all good music, if you love the Beatles, then you can really love any of the solo stuf made by all four of them. I love paul, as well john george and ringo. But i do agree that after 30 years of al their music being out, i love Mr. McCartney the most, and always will. Ram on :)
Saw him perform this song at his show in Salt Lake City...even though it wasn't on his playlist, he played it by request of one of the fans. This is such an amazing song, it's my new favorite song, by Sir Paul or anyone else
considering the Beatles on Sgt. Pepper covered their OWN faces (while including in the LP and maybe the CD) other photos which are close ups... I would consider unique photos put on YOUTUBE by posters a very COOL thing.... usually colour photos aren't quite obliterated by smaller black lettering either...
I think this is the best ukulele song Paul has done- if not best ever ukulele song. It's relaxing and simple yet has just enough background vocal/clapping without being overproduced
@tintindwarf yes, George and Paul both played/play ukulele- and I think John did too. Paul still plays ukulele live in his concerts as a tribute to George who showed Paul how useful they could be when carrying a guitar was inconvenient or just for a new sound.
@QueenBeatlesWings He sang it in Nashville and it was one of my favorite moments of the concert! Sometimes simple little songs are the most beautiful :) <3
After the release of the successful debut McCartney, Paul and Linda went on a lengthy holiday and spent much time on their farm on the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland. It was during this period that Paul, often with Linda's input, composed the songs that would feature on Ram. They flew to NYC in1970 to record their new songs. Denny Seiwell was used for drums, David Spinozza and Hugh McCracken were tapped for guitar duties, and Marvin Stamm was featured on flugel horn on Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.
This is an encouraging song. KEEP RAMMING ON! Give your heart to somebody.. soon.. ride away.. Very vague so it inspires you for what you know you need, but you don't know how to say it or express it to yourself. So maybe this is like a spell of sorts. It tells me, let go of the past, keep your love alive, don't give up or despair, keep on truck'n.
Paul, Linda, and a uke. Great little tune from one of my favorite McCartney albums! I like the reprise of this on side 2 where he goes into a rendition of "Big Barn Bed" which was to come later.
Paul wasn't getting heavy and deep the way Lennon and Harrison were; he was just making tuneful, unpretentious music that people could enjoy. I really think "Ram" is the best solo Beatle album. It really holds up very well.
I'd rather listen to "Ram" than "Sgt. Pepper", but that's just my preference. "Ram" is an excellent album, but I don't think it's better than early Beatles, 1963-6.
well. yes, Paul is not more than a musician genius, that's all :)) If he had composed only "Yesterday", this would have been enough for immortality :))
i bought this album when it first came out, we call it our breakfast album, every sunday morning it still goes on the turntable, and i cook breakfast, I say this because macca's music especially his early stuff is very earthy and real, i hope people go out to record shows and discover this treasure backlog of fine music and get the same buzz we have since 1971,, also wings wildlife album, the first wings album,, peace
yes, his early material is very natural and earthy. the songs on wildlife are so good, yet under appreciated. ram is my own fave, tho his first one, red rose, and band on the run are also very very good. the first one has a certain simplicity. indeed, i think that's probably what he had in mind for the whole Get Back/Let it Be project in Twickenham - uncontrived, simple and under-produced. his backlog is a treasure trovem you're totally right.
@vulcanicspice The best post WWII war songwriter. Paul is amazing. To be a great songwriter you have to have the ability to sustain concentrate on your career. I don't think Lennon had sustained concentration like Paul did. Paul is a real songwriters songwriter.
whats with all the people saying they never heard this before? fucking classic material, title track of linda and his first collabo album. Although it was of course all macca and just backup lyrics from linda. monkberry moon delight is the only song that rivals this in terms of creativity on the album.
That's funny. I love the Beatles, ... always have, and I'm 37 too, and also have never heard of this song or album until a few days ago. I heard Monkberry Moon Delight on CBS/AOL Beatles Tribute station and then came on here to check out all Paul's solo stuff which I haven't got to check out yet.
It's cool though cuz I've never heard any of this, and so much of Paul's solo endeavours so It's all new to me.... fun times :-DDD
I'm going to make playlists of all of his albums soon.

the hero of the Ramayana, husband of Sita. He is the Hindu model of the ideal man, the seventh incarnation of Vishnu, and is widely venerated, by some sects as the supreme god.
This song was a little touch of Paul playing studio genius, you have the simple lyric, simple uke, one or two notes on the electric piano, while paying homage to the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" harmonies.
Simplicity was the beauty of those early Paul solo albums. He tried to move the Beatles into that simplicity with "Get Back" but it just couldn't work. 1970-1972 was Paul going back to his roots and charting that course he hoped the Beatles would have followed.
This is from my favorite album of all time!! Did you know that Paul used to sign in hotels as Paul Ramon? If you look at that last name it is Ram on, a coincidence? I dont think so!! Paul still rocks and I can't wait till this new world tour starts!!!!
Ram On is the Theme Song of the RAM Album. The song takes a turn when introduced to a piano riff and suddenly the spotlight is on Paul with ukelele given to him by George. What is beautiful about the Key Song is Paul's intimate moment as you gasp for air as he breathes. Few Beatle songs can match Paul's heartfelt impeccable performance! The lyric "give your heart to somebody" sums up the Love Message Paul expresses to his fans. Amazing gem amongst many gems on this album! Buy it and enjoy!
it's a misprint- somebody inserted my total statement in the wrong place. the press in 1971-72 was nagative, in general. i agreeed with the negativity. thanks.
John Lennon wrote "Give peace a chance" and lot of people hate him and specially Yoko, because they broke up The Beatles, lol, they didn't find out that he created "The Beatles", he robbed the hearts of millions and then he keep their mouths shut, all of them are idiots if they don't realize that. John is the best songwriter ever and McCartney the best composer, in my eyes it has different meanings. That's my opinion.
I totally agree. Together they made beautiful music that will touch people for ever.John was flawed as a person but aren't we all? I would like to think of him as a peace loving man but it doesn't matter. We will always have imagine Love I am the walrus watching the wheels and strawberry fields
Lennon's solo output just doesn't appeal to me very much. Some good moments but most of the time he was a bit too heavy-handed with the politics and social commentary. The anger wore thin after awhile. "Some Time in New York City", his most overtly political album, was awful, and soured me on his solo work thereafter.
Yes, Imagine is a good album but one I'm not inclined to want to hear now though the title song is a classic. How Do You Sleep, the jab at McCartney, hasn't aged well, and neither has fluff like Oh Yoko.
@moorlock2003 C'mon. How Do You Sleep was a great track. As are "Oh, My Love", "Jealous Guy" (a classic), "It's So Hard", "Gimme Some Truth", "How?" All great tracks that make for a great album. In my opinion.
"How Do You Sleep" is a bitter poke at Paul, and does not make for pleasant listening now. "Gimme Some Truth" is another in a long line of political statements from Lennon which also don't make particularly enjoyable listening 40 years later. I'm not fond of anger expressed in music. Care to comment on that awful "Sometime in New York City" album? That one was so bad it stopped me from buying any more Lennon albums.

John also always hated his own voice for some reason and always had producers change it around alot, another sound difference
QueenBeatlesWings 1 year ago

Ram on :)

considering the Beatles on Sgt.

It's relaxing and simple yet has just enough background vocal/clapping without being overproduced

tintindwarf 1 year ago
@tintindwarf yes, George and Paul both played/play ukulele- and I think John did too. Paul still plays ukulele live in his concerts as a tribute to George who showed Paul how useful they could be when carrying a guitar was inconvenient or just for a new sound.

Paul wasn't getting heavy and deep the way Lennon and Harrison were; he was just making tuneful, unpretentious music that people could enjoy. I really think "Ram" is the best solo Beatle album. It really holds up very well.

not only that, it is better than some of the beatles' albums

I'd rather listen to "Ram" than "Sgt. Pepper", but that's just my preference. "Ram" is an excellent album, but I don't think it's better than early Beatles, 1963-6.

i bought this album when it first came out, we call it our breakfast album, every sunday morning it still goes on the turntable, and i cook breakfast, I say this because macca's music especially his early stuff is very earthy and real, i hope people go out to record shows and discover this treasure backlog of fine music and get the same buzz we have since 1971,, also wings wildlife album, the first wings album,, peace
backbeats100 2 years ago
yes, his early material is very natural and earthy. the songs on wildlife are so good, yet under appreciated. ram is my own fave, tho his first one, red rose, and band on the run are also very very good. the first one has a certain simplicity. indeed, i think that's probably what he had in mind for the whole Get Back/Let it Be project in Twickenham - uncontrived, simple and under-produced. his backlog is a treasure trovem you're totally right.

@vulcanicspice The best post WWII war songwriter. Paul is amazing. To be a great songwriter you have to have the ability to sustain concentrate on your career. I don't think Lennon had sustained concentration like Paul did. Paul is a real songwriters songwriter.

DonSweat 3 years ago 2

Ram On is the Theme Song of the RAM Album. The song takes a turn when introduced to a piano riff and suddenly the spotlight is on Paul with ukelele given to him by George. What is beautiful about the Key Song is Paul's intimate moment as you gasp for air as he breathes. Few Beatle songs can match Paul's heartfelt impeccable performance! The lyric "give your heart to somebody" sums up the Love Message Paul expresses to his fans. Amazing gem amongst many gems on this album! Buy it and enjoy!

Lennon's solo output just doesn't appeal to me very much. Some good moments but most of the time he was a bit too heavy-handed with the politics and social commentary. The anger wore thin after awhile. "Some Time in New York City", his most overtly political album, was awful, and soured me on his solo work thereafter.
moorlock2003 1 year ago 2
@moorlock2003 Imagine was a very good album though. Have you heard it?
lifestraight 1 year ago
Yes, Imagine is a good album but one I'm not inclined to want to hear now though the title song is a classic. How Do You Sleep, the jab at McCartney, hasn't aged well, and neither has fluff like Oh Yoko.
moorlock2003 1 year ago
@moorlock2003 C'mon. How Do You Sleep was a great track. As are "Oh, My Love", "Jealous Guy" (a classic), "It's So Hard", "Gimme Some Truth", "How?" All great tracks that make for a great album. In my opinion.
lifestraight 1 year ago
Fine, you listen to it then. I'll stick with "Ram"
moorlock2003 1 year ago
"How Do You Sleep" is a bitter poke at Paul, and does not make for pleasant listening now. "Gimme Some Truth" is another in a long line of political statements from Lennon which also don't make particularly enjoyable listening 40 years later. I'm not fond of anger expressed in music. Care to comment on that awful "Sometime in New York City" album? That one was so bad it stopped me from buying any more Lennon albums.
