Absolutely... everyone "steps" differently... being originally from Indy we barely pick up our feet..... I am in the white blazer w/ guy in grey suit at the beginning of this video steppin' to Peabo Bryson's cut !!
OMG!! I found myself on here, this is great, and what a fluke! I sure miss Chi, and the guys were/are still gentleman, wish I could find that guy in the grey suit!!!
I guess the individuality is what makes the stepping an art form. I am learning how to do an 8 count step here in Texas. It seems that everyone ad libs when they are on the dance floor anyhow.
Since you are learning I'll comment: some dancers are just going to do anything they think is kool no matter what the dance they think they are doing; some really do not dance to the music [just doing dance patterns]; some instructors teach the dance as fix set of patterns [no art there]; some think the dance is about all footwork -NOT! There is more than 1 version of the dance. The style that was the minority version in the 1990s is being pushed as across the U.S. as "original" now -Not!
Notice these are regular people (not staged) dancing in Chicago. The first part was film downtown in the court house lobby on a lunch break event sponsored by the city and the National Stepper's Society. If your watch the steppers your will notice that they don't all dance alike as what is portraited in many of the videos posted on this site. So, real Chicago-style stepping is not a set of about 8 dance figures repeated over and over with alot of walking steps or fast footwork.
