Saitiev was great, but I just can't get over how defensive the Russian style is. I just don't like that. It works great when you get into international competition, but its just not fun to watch. I know Saitiev was great all around, but if I was coaching my son on how to wrestle, we'd watch John Smith matches instead. International rules need to go back to favoring high scoring matches and not make it so favorable to defensive wrestling. You should have incentive to shoot more.
@infestation69 I'm not saying you gotta change everything about freestyle, but in the current system (not the one used back in 2000) if you are ahead 2-1 in the first period, there is no reason to do anything more in the period. If the score carried over, you'd have motivation to continue to be offensively aggressive. The current scoring system favors a lot of low scoring matches. Whoever scores first in the period then gets very defensive just short of stalling.
It's unfortunate this thread has to turn into a flame war. Brandon Slay wrestled well this match, and as an American, I cheer him on. But I respect Saitiev for the legendary wrestler he is. It is foolish to predict which country will have the best wrestlers...as the above video shows, even a great "untouchable" wrestler can lose to someone like Slay, a wrestler from Texas of all places, who set his mind on winning. Lets focus instead on keeping the sport alive, no matter where we are from.
I have to agree with Arminsaf2 about Saitiev being one of the greatest, and maybe the greatest Freestyle wrestlers of all time, not to mention incredibly exciting to watch. He's human though and Slay won one against him when it counted...a great match between two modern day gladiators.

@Lemonchellotti nice grammar champ actually when the soviet union was split up in 1991 it lost a ton of land and people. pretty much the eastern block of europe, so anyone who was born in the soviet union pre 1991 is allowed to wrestle for them. thats like canadians, mexicans and anyone from south america being allowed to wrestle for the usa. wait a couple of years then it will be even. keep in mind freestyle is only one of the 3 major styles

The soviet wrestling school was one of the best (or the best) and nowadays different national schools are keeping to have a high level. Imagine that kids from Saitiev's wrestling school will always have a high level training in a couple of years thanks to exceptional teachers. So you can wait as long as you can to see "even" wrestlers.
As an obvious example, just take 100m running in which USA had a lead in 90s or beginning of 2000s, but a running school in Kingston (opened by old Jamaican athletes) just blew it up with its athletes. And today,nothing shows that Buvaysar or other exceptional Soviet/russian champ will go to US and offer a competitive advantage.

Saitiev wins this match 9 out of 10 times, Slay would never beat Saitiev again, and he knew that, thats why he never came back, Leopold smashed Slay in the final, Leoplod never won a match against Saitiev in his whole career and they wrestled like 10 times, Slay did a good job in this match, luck was on his side, but the you cant compare the guys even if you are an American.
Slay would have beat Saitiev again if they wrestled. Slay had a degree from Penn, one of the best schools in the country. He moved on to bigger things with his life.
Maybe "one of the best" considering the length of this career. But the length of a career, plus total wins, etc isn't the only way to rank an athlete. You need to look at how he dominated over his career. There are other athletes maybe as good but just didn't compete that long.

It was one of the exiting match I have ever watched. After Olympic Games, Brandon had not been seen in Wrestling. But Saitiev continued and became World and Olimpic Champion. I expected to watced return matc of this matc. I think Brandon was very good at wrestling. Why did he cut his career. Maybe he was tired. As an veteran wrestler I can say that, wrestling is the most difficult sport. You became very tired in the match as if you run 20 km.
k brandon slay is just jacked and saitiev was a twig. take saitiev now and he ll kill slay 12 times over and ya russian style of wrestling is way better than american style of wrestling. the only person with a good flow from america was john smith

@cccgp1 "pure power"? A bit of an overstatement there, I think. It's definitely true to a point, but it's all part of the game. When you look at what's important, you can't separate strength, flexibility, etc from techinique; they are intrinsically linked and all affect what happens.

correct me if im wrong, and i may be, because i am not familiar with olympic wrestling, but i think bouvaisa saitev wouldve did even better if he had more strength. by looking at him one would know for certain that brandon slay has the upper hand strength-wise. at least that is how it would be in junior high and varsity wrestling anyway..
@lascision Saitiev is quite tall though so adding some muscles could hurt him in making weight. Although in 2008 Olympics he added more strength training - lifting weights etc. As he said more American type of training. But he wasn't young anymore so he might have really needed it.
regarless of stats, olympic sports MUST have moments like this. Without these matches, without the Slay's beating the favored Satiev's-what is the point in competitng? That is the beauty of the Olympics. That on any given day, whether you are the best in the world or the worst, you can be the best. And at the right moment, that very effort can win you the gold.

when slay got the single leg and hip thrusted him to the ground he should have set his left bar in and tried to run a double arm bar finish or a spike could have easily got back points maybe a pin
There isn't such thing as a fluke in wrestling. It's pretty amazing that Slay's offense in the final seconds of the match showed that even Russian's can be put into bad position. Beautiful double.

U guys are ridiculous! Stop arguing which country is better. Saytiev is a high class wrestler. He lost to Slay that day. Good job by Slay. If you are a wrestler, then u must know that everyone loses once in a while. So give both wrestlers respect for good wrestling match. I wanna see more competition from American team of freestyle in international arena. Unfortunately, they are not doing that well yet.

saitiev has the most perfect technique this was in his younger days now he is unstoppable and plus he uses no strength or physical advantage to win matches unlike american wrestlers they go in strong flexible but wheres the technique in that match its pure power if saitiev worked on strength he would dominate every1 even other weightclasses!

@cccgp1 "pure power"? A bit of an overstatement there, I think. It's definitely true to a point, but it's all part of the game. When you look at what's important, you can't separate strength, flexibility, etc from techinique; they are intrinsically linked and all affect what happens.

correct me if im wrong, and i may be, because i am not familiar with olympic wrestling, but i think bouvaisa saitev wouldve did even better if he had more strength. by looking at him one would know for certain that brandon slay has the upper hand strength-wise. at least that is how it would be in junior high and varsity wrestling anyway..

@lascision Saitiev is quite tall though so adding some muscles could hurt him in making weight. Although in 2008 Olympics he added more strength training - lifting weights etc. As he said more American type of training. But he wasn't young anymore so he might have really needed it.

regarless of stats, olympic sports MUST have moments like this. Without these matches, without the Slay's beating the favored Satiev's-what is the point in competitng? That is the beauty of the Olympics. That on any given day, whether you are the best in the world or the worst, you can be the best. And at the right moment, that very effort can win you the gold.

Saitiev is one of the greatest, if not the greatest freestyle wrestler of all time. 9 time world gold medalist, 3 time Olympic gold medalist, and he loses this match on a 50/50 call, and you guys attack this mans legacy. find me another wrestler with stats like that, not to mention he has wrestled at different weight classes.

He lost that match against an outstanding Brandon Slay but he is no doubt the best wrestler alive. Ali lost, Tyson lost, Karelin lost - but like Saitiev they are champions who inspired billions of other athletes.

There isn't such thing as a fluke in wrestling. It's pretty amazing that Slay's offense in the final seconds of the match showed that even Russian's can be put into bad position. Beautiful double.
