The Citadel was the South's Military school where as West Point was the North's. Also, you have to pay to go to the Citadel..West Point is FREE and MUCH MUCH harder to get in to than the Citadel.
OMG! Whoever said Westpointers didn't complain about the uniforms, you are CRAZY! My husband is a graduate of West Point and he said they were HEAVY and ITCHY...
ok, both institutions have their traditions and backgrounds, yes "long grey line" traditionally refers to West Point, and the uniforms... honestly who cares... I'm pretty sure that cadets at the citadel complain about how uncomfortable and restrictive to movement they are just as much as cadets here at west point... why are we arguing over itchy wool uniforms that have been around since before all of us and arent going to change any time soon for either school...
Grey refers to the cheap undyed uniforms of the militia forces in war of 1812.
Norwich in Vermont, the Citadel in South Carolina, and Virginia Military Institute all have copied USMA in some aspects, and other places in other aspects. Why not?
The last person is correct: The Long Gray Line refers to West Point. As a former cadet and graduate myself, I find it somehow ironic that the Citadel, among other military schools, have copied almost every aspect of their curriculum, including uniforms, from USMA. Really--even the uniforms?? You'd think they could have come up with their own...makes one wonder
Come up with our own? Being a USMA graduate you really don't know the history of Senior Military Colleges and the mandate put forth by Congress when they were first established. The Uniforms were started at the USMA, but passed down to VMI, Virginia Tech, Clemson and The Citadel by a general military assembly. After VA Tech and Clemson decided to go civilian, VMI and The Citadel retained the the traditions of the US "Cadet" uniform. Brush up bud...
Snyder, that's like complaining that the Air Force stole the Army's uniforms. West Point and Annapolis are the foundations of our Senior Military Colleges. Instead of complaining about it, you should be glad that the rest remember their heritage and the roles the service academies had in shaping military education in America.
Changing their uniforms would be disrespectful to their heritage and to USMA.

The Long Gray Line refers specifically to The United States Military Academy at West Point. i have served with several officers from West Pont and the citadel and without a doubt the West Pointers were some of the finest gentlemen and ladies i have ever had the pleasure of meeting. the citadel graduates on the other hand were completely ate up inside and outside and were some of the worst vain, arrogant, stupid and most self centered jerks i ever had the displeasure of meeting.
You may possibly be the most amusingly pathetic person that exists. I saw your other posts and it's pretty clear you quit the program. And I doubt you've served in the military because it's well known how West Pointers are as officers(at least most). I can't help but laugh at what you wrote. You put in so much effort to tarnish the school, but only come off as immature and angry. But regardless I am sure you have an extensive 20(or25)year military career to be proud of.
such words are absolutely meaningless coming from someone such as yourself and absolutely no merit.
as for my military career it is in excess of 25 years. as i mentioned earlier, the West Point graduates (over 150 to date) that i have served with are some of the finest gentlemen and ladies that i have ever served with.
of the 7 citadel graduates that i have known, only 1 was extremely professional and a gentlemen of the old school. the other 6 are no longer serving today, and rightly so.
What merit do your words hold? Hmmmm...I think none. And 150 officers in 25 years, wow, seems like an exact number for such an extensive career. As for my comments being "meaningless", you need to track back on all of your previous comments and reevaluate. And for someone who is supposedly such a seasoned vet in the US Military, you have displayed a level of class and maturity comparable to a 5 year old. And what is your "retired" rank? What service? You can study the internet if you need to.
are you going on every citadel video you can find and trying to trash the school.. like i said in "end of the 4th class system" video please come out to vegas and i will be happy to show you the product of a citadel education. We can have a debate, record it and post it on youtube.
For you to claim you have a 25 year military career and to bash one of the SMA's is beyond belief to me.
It depends, I've applied to the Naval ROTC and The Citadel was my first choice out of five colleges, and they send you where they need or have room for you. I'm from Minnesota, so I'm really hoping on ROTC to pay for it.
Long Gray Line does refer to West Point, I don't know where tradition comes in for the Citadel. I know because I have friends that attend the Citadel and the Point. Citadel opened in 1822, the Point in 1802. I've had people explain the reason why Citadel uses the Long Grey Line but I never understood it. The Point will always be the Long Gray Line to me. I like the Citadel though but their uniforms get a lot of people mixing them with the Point
