Eric Clapton duetted with most of the great guitarists of the world especially Blues based players with two very conspicuous exceptions. Gary Moore and Robben Ford. Clapton resided in the Albert Hall for weeks on end for 20 years known as the Clapton Proms and many guitarists guested on those shows. When Gary Moore was asked why he never guested he replied 'Eric never asked me'. That was always a mystery to me. Hmmmmm!

@wiltner Well, i've seen Gary live and i wouldn't really say that he's known for his kindness. I once read that he was very respected for his music but not really liked as a person back then. So, maybe that's a reason but i guess we'll never know why. Still, i've asked myself this very same question over and over again. He didn't even apear at any of the crossroads guitar festivals.

@wiltner I've seen Gary live and can't say that i found him very nice that evening, he came 2,5 hours late and started yelling at fans between songs. I later read that besides being well respected in the music scene multiple musicians stated that they didn't really enjoy working with him as a person...How ever we'll never know. It's a shame he never even got on stage at the crossroads guitar festival. A shame.

How did Steve Vai get brought up? Joe Satriani was always the more expressive and blues based of the two great virtuosos; Vai is more experimental and Frank Zappa like. Besides, without these guys, you wouldn't have that kind of virtuoso rock/metal. All modern guitar technique is based on Robert Johnson's chops; he took blues from a horns/woodwind thing and applied it to guitar. He is so influential that Jimi Hendrix wouldn't talk to people who didn't know who Johnson was. Win.

B.B. King is one of the very best guitar players to have ever lived. Steve Vai is a child. Listen to some of BB's stuff from the early 70s and see how much intensity he can build up with just a few phrases.

Steve Vai, and all those like him, are bad guitarists because they think that soul can be substituted for speed.

Steve Vai will admit he's not a particularly good blues player. WHich is one reason Ry Cooder played the blues stuff on the movie soundtrack. Steve did the ripping classical type solo.

Vai is who he is, and BB is who he is. How can you compare the two? Two different styles entirely, much less genres. Like having two cooks, one who cooks Italian which you love, and another Chinese which you might not like as much. Does this make the Italian a better cook?
