filtering, combined with labels lets you define rules that happen automatically when email hits your box, such as forward an email from your mom to your cell phone account, or route stuff from paypal or ebay to a label (aka folder) called purchases.

Though I dont use gmail and still in what I call old school, using outlook for all of my email, I think i need to use a few gmail accounts that I do have, esp for the spam filters. Good way to use these for email lists you join.
