That Beautiful Delta Lady was born in Mississipee, so I imagine it came naturally to Leon to call Rita that and write the song. Boy, he sure must have been in love with her (who wouldn't be) to write all those songs about her that Karen Carpenter, god bless her soul, made famous.
@msjenjenp Oh, yeah, it really does. Bell bottom blue jeans and denim platform shoes. It's just like yesterday again when I listen to Leon. Sigh.............

1970?! But he looks like the guy i saw riding a 10 speed downtown yesterday. Only difference is Mr. Russell is actually cool as fuck! Unlike the DB I saw. Awesome performance!
What ever happened to the good music? i remember being 13 years old when I was listening to this music, now I realize that I was blessed and I feel sorry for the kids that now listen hi hop, rap, and all that shit. I belong to a generation where we discover we has a brain and we actually used it
@jrcp61 Calm down, alright? In fact, Hip Hop isn't a music style but a subculture. And Rap is very different and beautiful if the lyrics are great and have a deep meaning. So don't talk about something of what you haven't any idea.
I MET, LISTENED TO, WATCHED, GREW UP IN THE SAME CITY, WENT TO THE SAME HIGH SCHOOL, AS THE ONE AND ONLY.... THE GREATEST.... THE KNIGHT IN ROCK & ROLL.... YES... YOU GOT IT.... MR. LEON RUSSELL!
only the 7th time to listen to delta lady thru this setting! I THANK YA & HALLELUAH!!!
os there some piano player who can explain me how the lick at 00:20 is done? I do root and octave with left hand and the same thing one octave up with the right hand.. but it doesn't sound right.. help me!
@LazyHammond91 Good ear - I became a Leon Russell fan the moment I heard that lick (and the rest of this song of course) when it first aired (in '71?) on PBS. As a high school kid tired of classical rote, I was determined to figure it out. Octaves with both hands, overlapping thumbs, key of C, intro changes go to the 5 chord (G major), starting on the 1 beat, 16th notes starting with the left octave, G G E E D D B B (one-ee-an-ee, 2-ee-an-ee) G G F F E E D D C chord
At this same session, Leon and the Shelter People did "Sweet Emily" and "May the Circle Be Unbroken," among others. Anyone have either of those clips?
I was born in Tulsa...and when Leon was an item, I was into his music..he's amazing and hasn't changed a bit...great sounds! I'm from 1970.....Lawton, Oklahoma was only 40 miles from my home, but i was too young to go there..only in high school in the 60's...we were pretty scared of doin whatever we wanted tho I did do a lot......Lynne xoxo AUSTIN,TEXAS

@AvirtualSwitzerland You are listening to one of the BEST songs ever written played by one of the BEST singer/songwriters in rock history and all you can focus on is Emily's size? My sympathies.
@judecreek2 ....I'm just pissed that she didn't bring chocolate chip cookies for the crowd @ The Canyon Club a couple months ago...no put down. I'm sure she's ton's o' fun.
@kingfucter Hi! Haven't seen your name in a while. I hope all is well with you. I've actually seen those shades at Meijer's. I thought about Leon and you!
always hated this song. still do. always loved Claudia though. still do. this fantastic session has remained deep in my heart all these years. I am sure that the instrumental Caravan was played on this set and it was fantastic. one day I might be lucky and hear it again, I can remember it clearly in my head as if it were yesterday.
I just saw him in Sacramento where some friends opened for him. I have been a fan of his since the sixties-so having friends open for him was unbeleivable! He is much older now--as we all are, but the music was SO fun. He mostly leaves the rowdiness up to his very competant, younger band members. AND he tells the most amazing stories of that golden ere of rock music...like the back story on how "Hard Rain" was co-written with Dylan. Go see him if you get the opportunity. He's a treasure!
Is Leon too cool, or what!? Takes himself a cool drink of whatever after knocking out yet another rockin' number--like falling out of bed for some folks, huh, brother?

@berad3 hey let me know man i love that song he sang that on that last waltz movie... which btw is one of the greatest rock and roll movies of all time.

Wow! I've been listening to Joe Cocker the past few days, and of course, am a huge fan of the traveling Wilbury's. But Jumpin Jack Flash at the concert for bangladesh is one of the greatest pieces of rocknroll i've ever seen.
@scarletsdad1 So soulfull!!!! Idont think Leon has recieved the credit so much deserved, although I heard he was just inducted into rock and roll hall of fame , but also heard hes not in good health right now just turning 70. Where is he from? Hes a legend in my book.
@tskanderful Leon will be inducted into the Hall of fame in March, 2011. He'll be 69 in April. He's from Lawton, Oklahoma. He just got a street named for him in Tulsa. It's called Leon Russell Boulevard. And, yes, the man IS a legend in everyone's book.
@judecreek2 Wow, thanks for the info. It's about friggin time the industry acknowledged Leon's 50 YEARS of writing for himself and others, his singing and his singularly unique foot-stomping honky-tonk and soulful blues. As one of countless native Tulsans who adore Leon, we adopted him as our home-town boy long ago. I drove 100+ miles to see him in concert a few years ago in Texas; such a joy to see him again. There are simply no words sufficient to thank him for all his work.
@Funkology101 You're welcome! I live in the Detroit area and I've driven to Chicago and Windsor, Canada to see Leon. I just know that on March 14, Tulsa is gonna be rockin', rollin' dancin' stomping and celebrating for days!

@jeffj257 - You're not even a bit crazy! I love this song. I've probably heard this song - a great song, too - about 1000 times since 1971. I really like this studio clip because one really gets to see what an amazing musician he really is and how good those that surround him are. Great stuff!
This is just such a gas to see this little gathering in a studio performing along with sweet Emily mixing baking goods and the mellow baby just enjoying it all.Kinda like you are in there home enjoying. I do remember this in 1971.
I know! Let's do a concert for a few of our friends, we'll film it and in 40 years people will watch it on their computers. Leon WAS the master of space and time. ROCK ON !!!
4:40....the whole freakin' band just stops on a dime and Leon acts as cool as ever afterward, like they hadn't even played the song! That was great. And what was in that cake Emily was mixing up?!
Simply can't watch and listen without getting a big smyle on...and oh yeah...he WAS having fun....getting into that piano and his head (you know what I mean☺) Greatest sound I can find and often now a much needed fix..(and sooo easy on the eyes!!!) ..Back to those good ol' real days of R&R. @jeffj257 - You're not even a bit crazy! I love this song. I've probably heard this song - a great song, too - about 1000 times since 1971. I really like this studio clip because one really gets to see what an amazing musician he really is and how good those that surround him are. Great stuff!

@jeffj257 It's sickness shared by many. Is it wrong to hope that it turns into an epidemic?
