I work at a country club as a server. It's sad to see how much food the wealthy members waste. I see a lot of their kids take one bite of their meal and then it's trash. After the shift, the kitchen trash's all the food from the buffet such as steak, shrimp, chicken, mash potatoes, rice, ect. When I see a meat thrown away to the garbage, I see it as one animal being killed for no purpose ):

I remember when I was in high-school and worked at taco bell. We used to waste so much food including the customers. We in no doubt wasted food to feed tens of thousands each month. Then we had the customers that came to lie about replacement orders just to feed their family. Short term solutions? People need to be closer to the food they consume.

1. We need to go back to local farms instead of factory farms.

2. We need to move farms and small food producers BACK into the cities and support community farms.

We need to get out of this mindset that food is simply a plastic wrapped product. It's not it's a community and LIFE.

Long term solution? We need to figure out a better path to prosperity other than this silly "monopoly game" we created for ourselves.

@oolong2 You are exactly right. There is a restaurant in Melbourne that goes one step further, and locals can barter home grown produce for restaurant food. The old greeks and italians in the area have great gardens and produce amazing fruit & veg. The restauranter exchanges by providing meals / dinners - he gets the best local produce and gets diners he may have missed out on. Similarly, older people cant always afford to dine out, this helps the local society so much.

It "helps" in that because the amount of edible food that is wasted is so huge, some people can literally sustain themselves on it, such as poor people. In a way, it decrease the number of hungry poor.

Meanwhile approximately 2.7 million tons of food are served or bought in the US per year & almost half of that food ends up in the garbage. But some Americans eat that food to avoid starving & they are known as "Freegans".

Having worked in waste disposal before I can say that its pretty sobering to be on the receiving end of what people throw away. A good quantity of it was in good condition, hence why we employees were scoring stuff for free just about every day - take it home, clean it up, its good to go.

(Sugar for Example) And at the same time we subsidize Corn which just so happens has something called High Fructose corn Syrup which is the Substitute for Sugar. We could have cheaper food, the government just gets in the way. I dont see Advertisements for Tomatoes, Potatoes, other basic food items. Just processed foods which are in general Less healthy and more expensive.

The cheaper food from foreign countries should there be no tariffs would only increase reliance on other nations for sustinance, and no food producing jobs, meaning that cheap food act was for nothing. Inefficiency arises from this situation. Money matters because it sends signals where there is money to be made by providing a service/good. If you want more jobs, taxes need to be lower and there needs to be less a centralized planned economy. America is not capitalist its corporatist, almost fascist.
