Sorry but hands down, Michael Jackson was way overlooked completely in this category. He had the best selling album of 1980 with OFF THE WALL by far. Not to mention it was the first album in history at this point to have 5 top 10 singles from a single album! It just goes to show how black artist in this day were over looked because of race! Even Michael said he felt he was over looked back then. Thank God he broke the race barrier with his next album which gave the Grammys no choice w/THRILLER!!
Wow, I mean, Wow, you mean to tell me that Cross's Album beat these great legends, I mean I would think that The Wall album was powerful. I ignore the hits from Christopher Cross's album, but I know "Sailing" is my favorite song of all time.
not sure if anyone caught this, but when they announced Christopher Cross, the song they were playing has Michael Mcdonald doing backup vocals, i thought it was funny.
I remember this Grammy night held at NY wherein big Superstars - Billy Joel, SINATRA, STREISAND, Floyd lost to a newcomer Christopher Cross. Then the following year, the Grammy was lacking in attendance of big superstars..
Although it is a bit overrated, I will agree "The Wall" should have won. Although, Christopher Cross is a wonderful album, so the people who say the choice was a travesty obviously don't appreciate soft rock. Sailing and Ride Like The Wind are some of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
Only one album was worthy of winning, and it didn't win. Christoper Cross had 1 good song (Sailing) on the LP, while The Wall has 2 LPs full of good songs. What a shame.
Knowing how the Grammys are I was surprised that the wall was nominated sense its so edgey. Anyhow Christopher Cross since has made many great hits such as.............................
Unreal .......Absolutely unbelievable. To this day the Grammys still choke on nominees and selections. What a farce! Commercialized and ego-stroking capitalists.
I'd die of sheer joy if you could upload "Best R&B Song" off the 1980 and 1983 Grammy Awards. That would be After the Love is Gone as well as Turn Your Love Around.
Love all these videos! Do you have any others from the grammys, besides the top awards? Stephaine Mills grammy win, or anything with Melissa Manchester?
@prunscilla There is a video from 1982 for Best Pop Vocal, Female in which Melissa Manchester won. I don't think an artist as "swept" the major categories (ROTY, AOTY, SOTY, and Best New Artist) ever since.

Billy was screwed that year. I have both albums and there is no comparing. BJ's album is definitively more creative.

Why was Christopher Cross backstage all night in the wings ? Was he that unknown that he wasnt given a seat in the front row?
hardsam68 1 year ago
@hardsam68 He didn't get a chance to go back to his seat from performing.

Thirty years later I do not think anyone would dispute that the Wall was the significant album of this bunch.
