I haven't heard this song since 1990 and was overwhelmed listening to it again. Its absolutely beautiful. Reminds me a bit of Shangri-La from A New World Record. I wonder if it had been on Time where it would have been placed?
TIME is one of the most unsung albums .......Lynns creative juices were at they're height and this piece of art went overlooked......at the time!!......This is my FAVORITE of the entire ELO catalog......Thanks for this Jeff Lynne!!.....You are truly a GENIUS!!
Was a realy big fan back then bought every thing that came out then they kinda faded jeff lynne moved to the u/s my music tastes changed but allways loved j/lynne even Idle Race were one of my faves but i cant belive i missed this song its one of the best lynne songs iv ever heard thanks so much for postin,,frankzito1///
Too bad this didnt make the final cut for TIME..its beautiful...there are some other songs on TIME they could have omitted..thiso ne FIOTS that LP so perfectly..love it!
@punditpete I think you're right. It wasn't the only time ELO's record company weren't brave enough with the first single from an album. The obvious example would be 'Rock'n'Roll is King' which IMO isn't the best track from Secret Messages.
You are quite right that Rock'n'roll is king was not the best single of Secret Messages.
ELO did not have an overly good following from people who liked hard rock music-they were considered naff. But a lot of the album tracks were cracking rock songs and should have been given their chance as singles.
Time After Time for example is a classic hard rock track.
'Time After Time' would have been my choice as well. It shows an entirely different side of ELO to the public, especially those who might not normally be tempted to buy their records . If you're a fan you buy their records anyway, if not you could've been tempted by a slightly unusual offering like 'Time after Time'.
Great collage J. I think it was the B-side from "Hold on tight". Great song. Brings back memories. I only had money to buy one single, so I bought "Twilight" with "Julie don´t live here" back then. Well, now I have the LP, but no record player. Lol. Ah, as I´ve said, memories..... and time stands still then too. André :-)
Thank you Andre. Jeff could sure make some great songs with some cool sounds. I still have few LP's of my own, but no player as well. Yes the memories, we are all getting up there in age now. At least we have our great looks lol
Just recently I´ve read I look like 35. That means I´m younger than you and can´tlook back thaaaaaaaaaaaaaat long. Lol
Can you imagine, my nephew didn´t know how a record player works. Oh, that was a moment, when I felt like over the edge. Next moment will be, when they offer me a seat in the subway. :-)))
ELO was my first musical obsession and 30+ years later I still love the music.. This is a great song.. just in case anyone wants to check it out.. this artist named Lana Lane does an excellent cover of it. One day I will make a vid of it so that youtube can delete it.
Love this song. I reckon it was originally going to be the last track of side 1 of 'Time' before it was put on the 'B' side of 'Hold On Tight'. Instead we got 'Another Heart Breaks' which IMO sounded like a 'B' side. Just my thoughts and i'm probably wrong but i think it would have been a perfect way to close side 1.
I remember I bought the single Hold on Tight in 1981 because of the B- side, this song. One of the good examples when the B- side is better than the A- side.
( When Time Stood Still wasn´t in the original Time album).
Jeff Lynne tried to tour with a new ELO group to promote the album called Zoom but they couldn't sell enough tickets so they cancelled. I think ELO has poor marketing. I think that if enough people had known about it, they would have come.

Just imagine the reaction from everyone if this song had been released as the A side. It is a far far superior song to Hold On Tight.
I bought the single on day of release and the Time album on day of release a few weeks later.
Here is a geeky piece of info for you- The time album was knocked off the album top spot by a recording of Prince Charles And Lady Diana's wedding.

I agree this song is lots beter than Hold On Tight. Bummer about Time. It's one of his best works IMO Have good one!

@Eltoniobonio I can't understand why Time After Time was only on the cassette release of Secret Messages, and not on the LP.
