He is great. I did notice he traded off two more high noted lines for one "Die" high note, and again goes for the 'one word high' .."mind" at the end. I'm sorry, but I do think that was a cop out. I think he probably can't handle too many full lines with high transitional notes. Ted Neelys (was) better. Watch the Gethsemane clip from the film and witness the raw power. Not to detract from the fact that this man has a fantastic voice.

@nighttrek I see where you're coming from, but my opinon differs a little. Yes, Ted had an amazing voice, and his part in JC superstar was performed extremely well. However, I do think that Steve has a much better voice. This performance isn't the best example of what he's capable of. Have you watched any of the other videos of him performing this song? Also, have you heared him sing 'Immortal'? The live version is perfect.

Steve Balsamo not only won an award for this but he also brought Andrew Lloyd Webber to tears .....I would say his brilliance is beyond question and he is clearly one of the greatest vocalists of our time or any other for that matter!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been looking for this early TV appearance for ages. Steve's early renditions were amazing. I remember seeing this on the TV as a student when the show came back to the West End in 1996. Later performances, although maybe more polished just don't seem to have the raw energy heard here. Thank you for posting this.

Oh My God!! I lost this video!! This was taped during the Sir Lawrence Olivier Award way back in (I think) 1997. I treasured this video for years until the tape broke. I forgot to convert it to DVD, stupid me!!!

I have seenTed Neeley on here and sorry but IN MY OPINION Christine is correct.He can't compare to STEVE.I prefer the depth of TEVE's voice. He is in his own class.First time I saw STEVE sing this on the OLIVIER AWARDS I did not know who he was and could never stand JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.He came on and I thought "Oh god, here we go, boring," but my God he blew me away.I was with my sister at the time and we both looked at eachother in dis belief.

I hate to disagree, but this is not the recoding from the Laurence Olivier Awards. It must be very close in time to it though. I make it somewhere in 1997. The LAA ceremony where h sang Gethsemane (in tuxedo) was in 1996.

Hi Christine, this is not STEVE at the OLIVIER AWARDS I have that on VIDEO tape, he wears a blue suit and you can see OLIVIER AWARDS 1997 on the podium when he is introduced.
