He is great. I did notice he traded off two more high noted lines for one "Die" high note, and again goes for the 'one word high' .."mind" at the end. I'm sorry, but I do think that was a cop out. I think he probably can't handle too many full lines with high transitional notes. Ted Neelys (was) better. Watch the Gethsemane clip from the film and witness the raw power. Not to detract from the fact that this man has a fantastic voice.
@nighttrek This is tricky. Try SB's performance in Holland for the same song on: youtube.com/watch?v=0AxMb7u0D8g&NR=1 From there, I am sure he could handle it all! A better performance than this one.
@nighttrek I see where you're coming from, but my opinon differs a little. Yes, Ted had an amazing voice, and his part in JC superstar was performed extremely well. However, I do think that Steve has a much better voice. This performance isn't the best example of what he's capable of. Have you watched any of the other videos of him performing this song? Also, have you heared him sing 'Immortal'? The live version is perfect.
Steve Balsamo not only won an award for this but he also brought Andrew Lloyd Webber to tears .....I would say his brilliance is beyond question and he is clearly one of the greatest vocalists of our time or any other for that matter!!!!!!!!!!!
wow. we used to have this on tape but it got ruined. gutted. and now here's the exact same performance from the Royal Variety! you superstar for uploading! love it so much, makes me teary every time
@therealkakkamakkara Song written in English by a British composer so what's wrong with singing it with a British accent!? Better than a texas drawl any day.
fantastic to see this old performance, you can really see how far hes come since this when you watch ahoy holland,im off to see for myself on wednesday night 28th oct in dublin just how great he is.the man is awesome, there is no better man for the part .
I've been looking for this early TV appearance for ages. Steve's early renditions were amazing. I remember seeing this on the TV as a student when the show came back to the West End in 1996. Later performances, although maybe more polished just don't seem to have the raw energy heard here. Thank you for posting this.
I first saw Steve Balsamo on The Wogan show years and years ago and he blew me away with this song....sent shivers down my spine. I adore his version, having listened to the others but that is only my opinion.
wow... so this is Steve Balsamo when he was younger? His voice is so much better... so much meat in his voice now! Amazing, amazing, amazing Steve... I am a fan now!
I like this look on him....did he look like this when he played Jesus on stage? I wish I would be able to see him, as this is my favorite musical and I love him as Jesus.
Oh My God!! I lost this video!! This was taped during the Sir Lawrence Olivier Award way back in (I think) 1997. I treasured this video for years until the tape broke. I forgot to convert it to DVD, stupid me!!!
Thank you so much for putting it on YT!
I love Steve to bits. He is the absolute one and only memorable JC.
Saying he is the only memorable JC is not an opinion. It's idiotic. He's good, but nowhere near Neally. And as for my mouth, maybe you could blow a horse.
You should go back to primary school first and learn how to spell? You seem not to know how your hero's name is written correctly. Neeley, Neely or Neally??
Pathetic. What an empty and lonely life you must have if you can't find anything else to do but insulting other people from behind the safety of your PC. Feeling triomphant now? Well, it's your little moment of glory dude.

Whatever, I am Dutch, so I am entitled to make mistakes as I am no native English speaker. As soon as you can write Dutch you can critisize my English. You're still the loser. And this was my last reply.
Verschrikkelijk, wat een ongelooflijke bokkelul ben jij zeg!
Good on you christine.... There's only one pathetic loser on this thread and it isn't you. Actually Mad...whatever, is sad and pathetic and a loser and not worth anyone else bothering to react to the most likely abuse that will be thrown at me now.
I have seenTed Neeley on here and sorry but IN MY OPINION Christine is correct. He can't compare to STEVE.I prefer the depth of TEVE's voice. He is in his own class.First time I saw STEVE sing this on the OLIVIER AWARDS I did not know who he was and could never stand JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.He came on and I thought "Oh god, here we go, boring," but my God he blew me away.I was with my sister at the time and we both looked at eachother in dis belief.
I hate to disagree, but this is not the recoding from the Laurence Olivier Awards. It must be very close in time to it though. I make it somewhere in 1997. The LAA ceremony where h sang Gethsemane (in tuxedo) was in 1996.
Hi Christine, this is not STEVE at the OLIVIER AWARDS I have that on VIDEO tape, he wears a blue suit and you can see OLIVIER AWARDS 1997 on the podium when he is introduced.
If you want contact me and I will send you a copy of it on DVD.
I would love to post it on here but I have not got a clue how to do that so if someone wants to do it contact me and I will send you a copy.
Id love to see him playing opposite Drew Sarich s judas. While we re at it how about Lea salonga as mary, Serkan Kaya as simon, Willard White as Caiphas and Micheal Crawford as Pilot?
Thank you for finding and posting it. I wish I could have seen him perform in JCS as he must have been amazing. But thanks to YouTube we can at least get some idea.
