  • What a shame that Schubert had to die at the young age of 31.

  • @josephonwhidbey OMG is he dead?

  • That Dame is England's glory.

  • @lovesGenet ... hello, English lyrics, by William Shakespeare Who is Sylvia? What is she, That all our swains commend her? Holy, fair and wise is she; The heaven such grace did lend her That she might admire be. Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness: Love doth to her eyes repair, To help him of his blindness; And being help'd, inhabits there... as jiliherbs says - Two Gentlemen of Verona ;-)
  • Who ih Nylia?

  • A German song and composer but the poetry is Shakespeare from Two Gentlemen of Verona, a play about Italians, therefore 100% English, as is Dame Jane Baker. Sounds almost European Union.

  • nothing wrong with english .... it's shakespeare

  • Sounds way better in German. And I'm sorry but this version makes me laugh :)

  • Whenever I hear a recording of Dame Janet I am amazed at the beauty of her voice and the almost mystical quality of her singing. She always sings English clearly and elegantly. I had the joy of hearing one of her Carneige Hall recitals many years age. I sat in the first row and I have to say that I was captivated by her voice and her artistry.

  • dur durr. i meant the style. technically. lyrically. i'm sure you've heard it before. :P

  • Her voice is so clear and to the point. Not many people can master this to this day

  • Definately German. No doubt.

  • It's a German song.

  • Dame Janet Baker has an incomparable phrasing and as always a remarkable musical sense. Perahia is the distinguished and sensitive wonderful pianist going along with Janet baker in an imaginative way and with a touch rarely surpassed. The interpretation of this lied is slower than most but consequently each sound and phrase can be appreciated with their just value and color. Both artists are breathing with music. Thank you for posting this ! Please more!

  • why do we tear when presented with rare life such as this.Schubert and Dame Baker .Oh !!

  • Wow, this is one of the finest pieces of music I've ever heard in my whole life. Truly, you can't get any better than this.

  • Wonderful...Great voice..sincere performance with brilliant technique and yet not "affected".

  • Superb!!! This is only matched by Jussi Bjoerling's version in beauty, to my ears. What a voice!

  • Want to cry: Bravo, bravissimo aaaaa

  • Great to hear this in this English version! Dame Janet's voice is of an extraordinarily rare beauty ;-)

  • Stunning!

  • Wonderful vocal technique...

    Thankyou...

  • Surely one of the world's great artists .She always appeared with such grace and nobility-fine characteristics for young singer's to aspire to acquire. She is quite simply MAJESTIC!

  • Who is Sylvia? What is she?

    She's my dearest mother,

    And a listener she

And ,alas, on YouTube she'll never be!

  • Most enjoyable- with thanks for lyrics, too!

  • Janet Baker is an Artist of the first rank.

  • Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness: Love doth to ther eyes repair, To help him of his blindness; And, being helped, inhabits there. Then to Sylvia let us sing, That Sylvia is excelling: She excels each mortal thing, Upon the dull earth dwelling: To her garlands let us bring. William Shakespeare: The Two Gentlemen of Verona, IV.ii
  • Who is Sylvia? What is she?

That all our swains commend her?

    Holy, fair and wise is she;

The heaven such grace did lend her,

    That admired she might be.
