one of my fave singers. why can't i understand the English. the german translation is usually used. Here ,the english is not clear .maybe this is german ? Must be!
@lovesGenet ... hello, English lyrics, by William Shakespeare Who is Sylvia? What is she, That all our swains commend her? Holy, fair and wise is she; The heaven such grace did lend her That she might admire be. Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness: Love doth to her eyes repair, To help him of his blindness; And being help'd, inhabits there... as jiliherbs says - Two Gentlemen of Verona ;-)
A German song and composer but the poetry is Shakespeare from Two Gentlemen of Verona, a play about Italians, therefore 100% English, as is Dame Jane Baker. Sounds almost European Union.
Whenever I hear a recording of Dame Janet I am amazed at the beauty of her voice and the almost mystical quality of her singing. She always sings English clearly and elegantly. I had the joy of hearing one of her Carneige Hall recitals many years age. I sat in the first row and I have to say that I was captivated by her voice and her artistry.
soy de emxico y mi maestra de canto me la puso y esta muy bonita solo que yo la cantare en italiano pro creo q es lo mismo y canta muy bien damejanet baker congratulations...!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dame Janet Baker has an incomparable phrasing and as always a remarkable musical sense. Perahia is the distinguished and sensitive wonderful pianist going along with Janet baker in an imaginative way and with a touch rarely surpassed. The interpretation of this lied is slower than most but consequently each sound and phrase can be appreciated with their just value and color. Both artists are breathing with music. Thank you for posting this ! Please more!
wowsa!!! i'm singing this for one of my grade 5 classical exam songs and listening to this women has influenced me to sing as fanastic as she does and in such a fantastic style.
Surely one of the world's great artists .She always appeared with such grace and nobility-fine characteristics for young singer's to aspire to acquire. She is quite simply MAJESTIC!
Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness: Love doth to ther eyes repair, To help him of his blindness; And, being helped, inhabits there. Then to Sylvia let us sing, That Sylvia is excelling: She excels each mortal thing, Upon the dull earth dwelling: To her garlands let us bring. William Shakespeare: The Two Gentlemen of Verona, IV.ii
What a shame that Schubert had to die at the young age of 31.
