The video is a good attempt at chronicling African American music but it left out some of the trail blazers like Mile Davis, Chuck Berry, Smokey, etc. Also, everyone needs to keep in mind the tragedies that many of these artists dealt with and the $ and credit due them, that was exploited. In other words, these artist created remarkable music but the White man got the profit.
Not bad for a college project. Reasonably informative for the short space of time. The sounds been disabled but thought I'd still give it a watch.
Some inaccuracy at the end though.
Gospel was born of spirituals. Some believe even Gaelic spirituals bore an influence. Bluegrass/High Lonsome emerged parallel to, not from the blues. Folk music is born of itself. Depending where in the world you spotlight it can be 1000's of years old. Country owes as much to folk as anything else.
Among other things including the fact that it kicks ass is that it was the first form of what could be called pop music and sparked the international music recording industry. it set the prototype for what pop music would always be.
Catchy
Emotive
Simple
Rhythmic
Taboo-ish
It all started with the blues and everyone has been copying it ever since.
Great - but its unlikely that Jazz or Ragtime evolved out from the blues - they originated in New Orleans in the 19th century, while the blues has its origins in a more rural setting in the Delta. However, they do have some of the same influences like european ballads and african rythims. All the best.

Thanks! I've gotten the inaccuracy criticism quite a bit. I'm flattered though that people hold it to a higher standard than I do lol = )

Why do you think blues has become such an essential form/style in American music?
